A look into the Newfoundland Berserkers Prospects' New Homes- Season Fifty Five SHL and SMJHL Draft Review

Double Media – Draft Article  – 4370 words, research - Ready for Grading

Looking back at the season fifty five SHL draft that happened Wednesday night, it definitely turned out to be an exciting one. There was a lot of rumors and talk leading up to the draft that played out as expected on the draft floor and even a couple of last minute trades along with many surprising risers and fallers that I was shocked to see. While The Newfoundland Berserkers had arguably the strongest and deepest rookie class in the SMJHL in season fifty four, it was a completely different story for season fifty five as Newfoundland only drafted two prospects, forward Liam Slate and goaltender Junior Guarda, as well as, signed one coveted undrafted free agent with center Lassi Suhonen.

Even though they only had three season fifty five prospects, two Berserkers were taken in the second round while another was taken in the third round and the fifth round of the draft. This Newfoundland rookie class, while they were small in size of numbers, they made up for it with their training and commitment. Right from the get go they were determined to prove to the league that they were one of the hardest working rookie groups in the SMJHL. On a team with a majority of season fifty three and season fifty four send downs the Newfoundland rookies began their careers at the bottom of the lineup and cut their teeth developing in roles with sheltered minutes. Never the less, the Berserkers rookies were able to create quite the names for themselves as Lassi Suhonen and Liam Slate became two thirds of the dynamic duo on Newfoundland’s fourth line while Junior Guarda provided the team with some quality back up minutes and wins in net. In addition, overeager Mathias Birdstrom played an important shutdown role on the team’s checking line that really got him noticed by the scouts this season.

While Newfoundland was known this season for their incredible group of send downs, I wanted to provide some exposure and recognition to our Berserker rookies from season fifty four, as well as, introduce the newest members of the Newfoundland Berserkers who were just drafted in the season fifty five SMJHL draft last night! Also there will be some special insight from Newfoundland Berserkers general manger @JNH throughout the article! So here is a deeper look into each of the drafted Berserkers in order of their acquisition.

(JNH and SDCore are one of the best GM duos in the SMJHL and were even nominated for the Mathias Chouinard Award for the top general manger duo in the SMJHL)

Second Round, Eighteenth Overall Pick: The Toronto North Stars Select Right Wing Liam Slate (314 tpe) @Tylar
Season fifty four SMJHL regular season stat line- GP: 50 | G: 7 | A: 9 | P: 16 | +/-: 4 | PPP: 0 | PIM: 8 | H: 10 | SB: 13 | TA: 13 | GA: 12
Season fifty four SMJHL post season stat line- GP: 14 | G: 7 | A: 2 | P: 9 | +/-: 4 | PPP: 0 | PIM: 0 | H: 5 | SB: 2 | TA: 1 | GA: 4

The first Newfoundland Berserkers taken off the board during the SHL draft was a lot later than I expected. The Newfoundland draftees, teammates and alumni had to anxiously wait during the team draft party until the second round to finally celebrate when Liam Slate’s name was called. A lot of the experts had Slate going in the first round in their mock drafts some even as high as in the top five. I do not understand what made SHL general managers turn away from Slate when he was clearly one of the most developed prospects with one of the highest ceilings. He is a five star prospect that clearly had top five value so the Toronto North Stars got an absolute steal in the draft when he fell to them.

Having pretty much unlimited funds to support his training, even if Slate did not earn another dollar he would be able to afford approximately seventy weeks of maximum training. However there is no slowing down for Slate as he has had a consistent drive to get better every day from the time he was a DFA with the Newfoundland Berserkers in season fifty three until now.

In terms of his work on the ice and in the gym, Slate was one of the hardest working rookies being ranked fourth in total points earned at the time of the SHL draft. In his limited role on the Berserkers fourth line Slate was still able to make a positive impact in game and helped create one of the most dynamic fourth lines in the juniors becoming an x factor for Newfoundland. In the season fifty four playoffs Slate brought his game to another level scoring goals at a .5 pace per game matching his regular season goal total in a matter of only fourteen games which is extremely impressive for a rookie. Rumors have it that Slate will be given an opportunity to earn a spot on the team’s first line in the pre season with the departure of SLATT Potts so he could have a much bigger role on the ice and prove he is a leader for the Beserkers come season fifty five.

Off the ice, Slate is one of the most vocal people in the media with in his draft class. In addition, he has always been supporting teammates in the locker room, sharing laughs, playing games like skribb with the team, sharing cute pictures of his dog Skye, getting the guys talking and being a major voice in the room. To put things into perspective Tylar has over four thousand messages within our discord server this season and it is not even an over exaggeration as we got a bot to keep track of these things. With all of this being said, you would think this is a player that every SHL general manager would have a hard time passing over in the draft. Thus, I believe that Slate was one of if not the best value pick in this season’s draft. Usually by the eighteenth overall pick teams will not get one of the most active players of the class or a locker room leader but with Slate none of this is the case.

When talking with Newfoundland general manager JNH here is what he had to say about Toronto’s selection of Liam Slate: I think it is pretty obvious that I think that Toronto got a massive steal.  There is a reason we picked Ty first overall in the SMJHL draft and he has not slowed down since. He is the most active poster in our discord over the last season and a bit and is max earning TPE at a rate that would make Steve Harrington (@NeonLime) jealous.

(Even though Liam Slate fell in the draft, he was pretty happy to land in Toronto.)

Second Round, Twenty Fifth Overall Pick: The Chicago Syndicate Select Center Lassi Suhonen (270 tpe) @teztify

Season fifty four SMJHL regular season stat line- GP: 50 | G: 4 | A: 8 | P: 12 | +/-: 3 | PPP: 0 | PIM: 20 | H: 37 | SB: 7 | TA: 7 | GA: 11
Season fifty four SMJHL post season stat line- Season fifty four SMJHL post season stat line- GP: 14 | G: 0 | A: 2 | P: 2 | +/-: 1 | PPP: 0 | PIM: 2 | H: 6 | SB: 2 | TA: 4 | GA: 4
The next Berserker taken in the second round shortly after Liam Slate was his fourth line partner in crime center Lassi Suhonen. Tez is a guy with an impressively rich history in the SHL dating all the way back to the first of the league and even has a SHL trophy named after one of his players (the Cole Reinhart trophy awarded to the Western conference playoff champions). He has made hall of fame players being known as a user who often creates super stars, built an incredible dynasty with the Edmonton Blizzards as the general manager way back in the day, has served important roles in the head office and is one of the owners of the site. With that being said there is no questioning his commitment to the SHL throughout the years as he can be seen as a bench mark for what it takes to have long term success as a member, player and a general manager in the SHL.

With Suhonen declaring for the SMJHL after the draft and training camps already starting, he missed out on some of the available training opportunities which is a major reason why he was ranked thirty third amongst his class peers in terms of development tpe heading into the SHL draft as he still has some catching up to do as a late bloomer in comparison to other prospects who started earlier in the SMJHL. However, tpe alone does not make or break one’s draft stock which is why I thought Suhonen was a mid to late first round talent. Suhonen also has a pretty nice bank account with over thirty million and has a lot more money coming in soon with his recent media efforts so I would not expect maximum training to be an issue for this young SHL prospect. In addition, Lassi was able to make a positive impact in the Berserkers lineup with very limited minutes on the fourth line being the second of the two third of Newfoundland’s x factor line. While Suhonen will likely sit behind three 425 tpe third year centers this season in Newfoundland, it will allow him to continue to develop his game in a sheltered role until he reaches his maximum development in the juniors as a 425 tpe player. Even though this Finnish prospect has played as a fourth liner, his levelheadedness, demeanor to buy in to the larger team picture and his enthusiasm for his player development, as well as, his prioirty for team success really makes him a great guy to have around in Newfoundland. Overall, I expect big things down the road from Suhonen and will be rooting for him to break out into a superstar. Therefore, I believe this was a great value pick for the Chicago Syndicate in the middle of the second round.

Even before the draft Suhonen’s name was brought up in Calgary’s war room plenty of times as I personally saw he could potentially be this season’s Marner in the draft. As the Dragons saw him falling into the mid second round we were tempted to try to pull off a trade and get him. However after talks with Suhonen’s agent Teztify it was clear that his preference was to play in Chicago with his agent’s ties to the franchise and the connections Suhonen has with members of the Syndicate and at the end of the day you got to respect that. So with no big surprise as many predicted in the mock drafts leading into the event Lassi Suhonen would be taken by Chicago with the twenty fifth selection which they ironically acquired last season from the Calgary Dragons that was sent in a deal that saw Calgary acquire Cale Amundsen (another member of the Newfoundland Berserkers).

When talking with Newfoundland general manager JNH here is what he had to say about Chicago’s selection of Lassi Suhonen: I think everyone knows what tez brings. It is a pretty low risk, high reward pick for Chicago. The Syndicate prospect pool is pretty loaded with the likes of Vitecek, Scott and Minamino battling out for a roster spot on one of the top teams in the East. Tez is one of the SHL's longest and most successful users, so if he can stick around the site and find time for it when school starts again, Chicago will be really happy. If not, Chicago will still be happy as he is a positive presence in the locker room and the Syndicate are happy to have him around.

(Lassi Suhonen was a strong two way player in the SMJHL for the Beserkers last season on the fourth line so it will be interesting to see how he grows in that role during the upcoming season.)

Third Round, Forty Fourth Overall Pick: The Chicago Syndicate Select Goaltender Junior Guarda (247 tpe) @Loco

Season fifty four SMJHL regular season stat line- GP: 11 | W: 6 | L: 3 | OTL: 0 | SHA: 252 | SAV: 227 | GAA: 2.59 | SO: 1 | SV%: .901
Season fifty four SMJHL post season stat line- GP: 0 | W: 0 | L: 0 | OTL: 0 | SHA: 0 | SAV: 0 | GAA: 0 | SO: 0 | SV%: 0

The next Berserker to be taken off the board in the season fifty five draft was back up goaltender Junior Guard in the middle of the third round which was not really a surprising pick if you did your homework on Chicago’s recent drafting history. This pick continues the strong and steady pipeline of Berserker prospects being taken by the Chicago Syndicate. Soon enough you might as well call Newfoundland the Syndicate’s farm team as they have a whopping six active Newfoundland prospects (Patric Twist, Ryuuji Minamino, Niccolo Livius, Renji Atake, Lassi Suhonen, and the pick mentioned above Júnior Guarda) currently in their system playing in the SMJHL. While Guarda’s player agent Loco had a major presence in the league previously, Guarda has been a bit of a quieter voice himself with in the locker room. Over the last couple of weeks leading up to the draft Guarda has some what fallen behind in his training and his personal player development which caused him to be sitting at 247 tpe which was the forty fifth best out of all his peers selected heading into the SHL draft. This may have been what scared some SHL general managers away on draft day leading him to fall to the forty fourth selection along with the fact that goaltenders are often selected later on in the draft.

However, it is no where near too late for Junior to prove to the scouts and general managers who passed on him that they were wrong as he has plenty of time to turn things around and develop into a solid starting goaltender in the SHL. His development all starts with learning behind and practicing with one of the best goalies in the SMJHL and learning from Cale Amundsen who was the SMJHL MVP and goalie of the year in season fifty three. Having the opportunity to study Cale every day, pick his brain on ways to get better as a goalie, go head to head with him and practice should all help with Guarda’s future development. He will have a lot of time to develop into a starting goaltender as well since Chicago’s starter is currently over 1300tpe and does not look to be slowing down any time soon which is another bonus for Guarda.

In terms of his play, for a rookie backup goalie Guarda was able to excel in the backup role playing in eleven of the fifty regular season games and putting up a record of six wins and three losses being a big help in having Newfoundland secure first in the eastern conference in season fifty four. In addition, Guarda was able to post over a .900 save percentage and around a two and a half goals against average. Watch for Junior to continue to improve upon these numbers in the up coming seasons as he continues to develop.

When talking with Newfoundland general manager JNH here is what he had to say about Chicago’s selection of Junior Guarda: Loco continued the train of Berserkers prospects to Chicago as he came in the later rounds.  Chicago is going to need a goalie to replace Soonika when he regresses and eventually retires and who knows - that could be Guarda. He hass been a really great presence in Newfoundland so far as Cale's backup and is a bit more of a project. If his schedule clears up a bit and he can get back to his high pace training, Chicago could find themselves with a steal here.

(Guarda seemed pretty happy on draft day to be drafted to a team with lots of familiar faces in Chicago)

Fifth Round, One Hundred and Forty Second Overall Pick: The Buffalo Stampede Select Left Wing Mathias Birdstrom (348 tpe) @BlackLabelBird

Season fifty four SMJHL regular season stat line- GP: 50 | G: 5 | A: 18 | P: 23 | +/-: 18 | PPP: 0 | PIM: 30 | H: 51 | SB: 43 | TA: 23 | GA: 11
Season fifty four SMJHL post season stat line- GP: 14 | G: 0 | A: 5 | P: 5 | +/-: -2 | PPP: 0 | PIM: 0 | H: 9 | SB: 9 | TA: 2 | GA: 3

This was one of the most unexpected picked of the entire SHL draft as Mathias Birdstrom, an overager who could have been taken in the last two drafts but was overlooked was taken in the ninth round with the second last player selected in the draft. It is almost certain that a ninth round pick will be passed on or an inactive player so Buffalo struck gold when they were able to taken the player with the highest tpe in the draft with three hundred and forty eight tpe which is expected since he is two seasons older than almost all of drafted prospects.

Birdstrom played the majority of the season on Newfoundland’s third line, racking up a solid twenty three points while also effectively playing in a shutdown role as one of the teams checking lines putting a respectable amount of shots blocked and takeaways. While Birdstrom is not the flashiest player, he has worked hard to earn himself the honor of being drafted into the SHL through perseverance, a consistent work ethic and determination to not give up on his SHL dreams. It will be interesting to see if the Stampede actual sign Barnstorm since there may be some cap restrains around it but you cannot help but feel good for this journeyman and root for him to one day make an SHL lineup.

When talking with Newfoundland general manager JNH here is what he had to say about Buffalo’s selection of Mathias Birdstrom: One of the longest standing members on the Berzerker roster and a fan favorite, Birdstrom was an FA signing back in season fifty two and is coming back for his fourth season with the team.  The boys were ecstatic to hear his name finally called by Buffalo. Updating wise he really pulled it together last season and nailed down a ton of opportunities. Once his time is up, I really hope he gets a shot in the big leagues as he's a great guy and has worked hard for it.

(Birdstrom was pretty excited to see his name get called by Buffalo on draft night after having been passed up in the last two drafts.)

The Season Fifty Five SMJHL Newfoundland Berserkers Draft Picks

Defenseman Jonas Kahnwald (186 tpe) @Festinator Drafted Round Two Fifteenth Overall by the Newfoundland Berserkers

Jonas Kahnwald is a German defenseman and a first generation player that caught the eyes of many SMJHL scouts and general managers. Kahnwald is known for his offensive abilities on the back end with his wicked shot and along with his strong skating ability which should make him an instant threat on the power play and help contribute five on five to Newfoundland’s already dominant offense.

In the short time he has been around leading up to the SMJHL draft, Festinator has earned himself a very positive reputation off the ice as a great locker room guy in the rookie discord, as well as, in the Newfoundland locker room since being drafted Saturday night. Kahnwald has been working hard preparing himself to play in the SMJHL taking advantage of every training opportunity provided to him so far which has fast tracked his development and has also been a vocal member in the media having already racked up a bank account of around two million for training. With his rising draft stock the Berserkers expected him to go pretty high in the draft and traded up before the draft to the top of the second round in hopes of having a higher likelihood of selecting this promising young player.

As you can imagine when Kahnwald was still on the board at fifteenth overall Newfoundland management was pretty thrilled as JNH explains: Kahnwald had some ties to last season's leading scorer Minamino and shot up the draft boards in the week or so prior to the draft. We really targeted him early and had talks with Carolina, Kelowna and Anaheim (and feelers out to a couple other teams) about moving up in the draft. We were pretty convinced that he was going to be gone by the time we picked at fifteenth overall. When we got to twelfth overall and three of our top four defensive prospects were still available, we started to get excited and then he luckily was there for us. Kahnwald will be this generation's Jukka Timonen. He will be a send down eventually leading a young defensive corps hopefully back into success.

(Kahnwald will have big shoes to fill down the road in Newfoundland with the departure of Jukka after being called up by the Manhattan Rage)

Right Wing Vaseline Podcalzone (175 tpe) @bdu754 Drafted Round Four Thirty First Overall by the Newfoundland Berserkers

Vaseline Podcalzone is a Russian winger who is also a first generation player who has similarly made a positive first impression on SMJHL scouts and general managers in this deep reddit draft class leading up to draft night. Podcalzone is a strong physical two way forward who is not afraid to lay the body and get in the face of frustrated opponents. It looks like he should excel in a fourth line checking role for Newfoundland this season with his hitting and checking stats as some of his strongest attributes.

In terms of off ice characteristics, Podcalzone has already made his positive presence known in Newfoundland, only taking a couple of hours before a Yoshii Berserkers emoji was created for the Newfoundland discord and has seamlessly fit in really well with the team. He has been working hard to get better and develop his game completing all the point tasks available to him so far and completing training. Not having any media or graphics done may have hurt his stock a bit leading to him fall in the draft to the fourth round but it left Newfoundland Berserkers’ management extremely happy to get one of the bigger steals in the draft.

When talking with Newfoundland general manager JNH here is what he had to say about Newfoundland’s selection of Vaseline Podcalzone (which by the way is one of the coolest and most original names in this seasons draft class): Podcalzone is another player that we considered trying to move up to try to secure. We thought he had second round potential and were trying to bump thirty one up to an earlier pick. We had a couple choices that were available at thirty one but something in my gut told me that Podcalzone was our guy and I am really hoping we were right. He has had a fantastic first twenty four hours with our roster and I am looking forward to seeing what he can bring over this season and beyond.

(As a highly touted prospect, the Russian, Podcalzone will have time to get use to North American style hockey playing on Newfoundland fourth forward line in season fifty five)

In a draft class with just under eighty prospects selected for the upcoming season fifty six SHL draft class, it is shaping up to be an epic group if most players can stay active throughout their junior season. With the Newfoundland Berserkers ripe with the most send downs in the SMJHL, they were one of only two teams that made only two selections in this draft class. The Berserkers are already in a really great spot to build upon their success and improve on last season record of finishing first in the eastern conference and tied for first in the SMJHL. On paper they should definitely be the favorites to go all the way and had no need to have a big draft heavy this season. However, they did bring in two studs and possibly the final two pieces missing from their championship puzzle with Jonas Kahnwald and Vaseline Podcalzone. With the offseason pretty much all but wrapped up, I guess only time will tell if this Beserkers' roster has what it takes to bring home the Four Star Cup to Newfoundland for the first time in the franchise’s history!  Berserkers  Berserkers  Berserkers
