Ireland Last Four Games
#1

Games nine, ten, and eleven were set up to be what decided if Ireland would take the step forward this season and break out of the group stages.  Important games against Canada, Great Britain, and Norway would be critical tests to see if they could put up some points and stay in the top three going into the final stretch of the schedule.  Unfortunately for them, it could not have gone worse, losers of all three games and in some cases badly.

Game nine was against their heated rivals, Great Britain.  They had a tough loss to them earlier in the tournament that they were hoping to avenge.  Unfortunately, this rivalry game did not go the way of the underdog and it ended up as a blood bath.  A five to one loss that left the team demoralized and getting desperate.  Knowing that chances are becoming fewer each game to earn valuable points and Canada on the horizon, this was a game they needed to at least send to over time to get some momentum back.  It was not to be though, and now they have to pull themselves together to face the one seed in their next match.

Game ten came against the top team in the Group B table, Canada.  With a roster that is stocked with talent, this was always going to be an uphill battle and a game that was more of a measuring stick for how far the team has progressed.  Unfortunately, the high hopes that the team had of competing and stealing a win were quickly dashed as Canada destroyed Ireland 5 to 1.  Their chances of advancing were not all lost though, there still was a chance that they could advance even after this big loss.

Game eleven has taken on a new importance as this would be an elimination game if things went a certain way with other teams.  To say the Ireland team was desperate would be an understatement after some crushing losses.  Team Norway was seen as a team that they could beat if they put the right effort in as they were essentially level in the table.  After a hard fought back and forth battle, it was Team Norway who came out ahead and dashed any hope of Ireland getting out of Group B.  It was a hard way for their chances to die but they still had one more game to end on a high note against the team who would be going forward, Team Sweden.

Game 12, their final game of the tournament was against Team Sweden, the three see and already locked into advancing out of the group stage.  Team Ireland was still reeling from the losing streak that had ousted them from advancing to the round robin stage but the team wanted to put on a show for their final game together this season.  Beating a team who was advancing would send the right message and have the team leave on a positive note that they could carry forward into next years tournament.  The game was very closely contested but Ireland managed to put away a second goal and secure a victory.  While it only resulted in a few extra points, it was a huge boost to their morale and left everyone feeling good about the future of Irish hockey.
