SHL Teams Werewolf
#1

Lately, the SHL community has been playing a decent amount of Werewolf. After 10 games on the forums, we switched to Discord to increase interaction and invite people to be more responsive. We’ve played 5 games on discord so far, some of them with 20+ players.

New signups for Werewolf game #16 have opened on our Discord: https://discord.gg/Vu4SpQr

And without further ado, I hereby present: SHL Werewolf!

The rules

Every team represents a role. With 16 teams, I’ve chosen to go with 4 wolves, 1 neutral and 11 villagers. The goal of the game is to beat the other team / fulfil your neutral win condition. The villagers win when the werewolves have been killed, the wolves win if they outnumber the villagers.
Every day, the living may debate and vote on who to drag to the gallows for a hanging, in the hopes of catching the bad guys and slowly weeding them out. During the night, the power roles come out to play, gathering info, blocking people or even performing kills in the name of the village. However, the night is also the time for the wolves to target a villager and shred them to bits.

The Village Roles

The Doctor

One of the classic town roles, the Doctor can prevent night kills and save a player from a possible death once per night. Once per game, he could even safe himself. Each night, he packs his first aid kit and stands ready in a house of his choice. If the person living in that house is targeted by the wolves or the Hunter, he can storm in to bandage the wounds after the attacker leaves and safe the life of whoever was hit. The Doctor will stay anonymous, even to the healed person, but the person who was saved will be covered in bandages.

The Doctor in our game will be played by: The Baltimore Platoon.

The Seer

The Seer is the one of the most powerful of all the possible villagers roles. Once a night, the seer can look at anyone and immediately discern their role. Since the Seer does not move, he cannot be blocked by the Escort. One of the most important aspects of being a seer is sharing your information with the town. Even though the Seer can have a lot of information early in the game, claiming the role early will make him a juicy target for the wolves leading to a certain early demise, which would be a great loss for the village. Furthermore, with the Framer in play, the information the Seer gets isn’t always 100% reliable as a player being framed will show up as a wolf to the Seer.

The Seer in our game will be played by: The Buffalo Stampede.

The Escort

While the Escort is definitely supposed to be on the villages side, their night action can be potentially disastrous for the village as well. Especially early in the game, the Escort runs the risk of randomly visiting and blocking the night action of a village role, which could prevent the Doctor, Bartender or Hunter from using their skills. Every night, the Escort can sleep with anyone target, preventing them from leaving their house. If the target has a role that requires moving, the Escort will prevent them from performing their ability for the night. If the Escort blocks the Alpha Wolf, no kill occurs! Since the Seer does not move they are immune to the Escort’s roleblock.

The Escort in our game will be played by: The Chicago Syndicate.

The Hunter

The Hunter has a bow and two arrows, which he can use during any night to kill a total of two targets in the game. The Hunter can only kill once per night. If used right, the Hunter can be a very powerful village role, as an Alpha Wolf killed by the Hunter will not kill during the same night, preventing a night kill. A Hunter shot is the only way for a village to kill a Jester without a revenge kill occurring. Because the Hunter needs to leave the house to travel to his target, he can be roleblocked by the Escort, he does not lose his shot when this occurs. However, if the Hunter’s target is saved by the Doctor, his shot is wasted.
The Hunter is the only role that wins a 1 versus 1 ending against a wolf, regardless if they have any shots remaining.

The Hunter in our game will be played by: The Manhattan Rage

The Knight

The Knight is very hard to kill, whether it’s by the hands of the Hunter, an attack by the Alpha Wolf or being lynched by the village. Wearing a think armour, they will survive one kill attempt during the game meaning they can only be killed if they’re the target of a killing action for a second time.

The Knight in our game will be played by: The Calgary Dragons

The Mayor

Leading the town before the arrival of the wolves, the Mayor still holds some sway over the rest of the village and can manipulate the outcome of lynch votes. The Mayor has two powers - a pardon and a stuff - each of which may be used once per game. The pardon can be used to stop the hanging of a player at the end of the day, if the Mayor is convinced the village is making a mistake. The vote stuffing ability works the other way around, giving the Mayor three votes on a single day instead of the normal one vote to add to his desired lynching target. A Mayor using the pardon remains anonymous, while using the stuffing will out him to the public.

The Mayor in our game will be played by: The Texas Renegades

The Bartender

The Bartender runs the local bar, and has a lot of booze still laying around. With all the bars closed due to the Werewolf scare, the bartender starts using all that alcohol to gather information. Every night he chooses three targets to get drunk, and in the process learns the role of a random one of the three, although he does not know which one.

The Bartender in our game will be played by: The Winnipeg Jets

The Masons

Masons are a part of a secret society, and therefore know the identity of other Masons in the village. They usually come in pairs, and their only special power is knowing who their brothers are, and therefore having at least one villager who they know they can trust.

The Masons in our game will be played by: The Toronto North Stars and the Minnesota Chiefs

The Vanilla’s

Vanilla villagers have no special powers, but that doesn’t make them useless. The vanillagers have to rely on their own insights and sense of deduction to help the village win, but they’re not indispensable like some of the power roles and can therefore be used to draw out Wolves.

The Vanilla’s in our game will be played by: The Los Angeles Panthers and the Tampa Bay Barracuda

The Neutral Roles

The Jester

The Jester is a neutral role, and doesn’t have the same winning conditions as the village or wolves. The Jester lives to die, and in order to be victorious he must convince the village to lynch them. As a parting gift, the Jester gets to kill one on the players voting in favour of lynching him. Getting shot or eaten does not count, and will not lead to a revenge-kill.

The Jester in our game will be played by: The San Francisco Pride

The Wolf Roles

The Alpha Wolf

The Alpha Wolf is the leader of the Wolfpack, and the one performing the actual kill at night. If there’s a dispute on who to kill at night amongst the wolves, the Alpha Wolf holds the tie breaker. If the Alpha Wolf is killed, a new Alpha Wolf will be randomly appointed from the remaining Wolves. If the Alpha Wolf is shot by the Hunter, no night kill will be performed that night.

The Alpha Wolf in our game will be played by: The New Orleans Specters

The Heir

The Heir is a normal Wolf, without special powers other than their vote on who to kill at night. However, should the Alpha Wolf be killed, instead of randomly selecting a new Alpha Wolf, the Heir will rise up and claim their place as the new Alpha Wolf.

The Heir in our game will be played by: The New England Wolfpack

The Framer

Apart from taking part in normal Wolf activities, like voting on who to kill at night, the Framer has an extra power. Once per night, the Framer may plant suspicious evidence on anyone person. The evidence lasts for two days, and will cause the target to show as a Wolf if check out by the Seer or Bartender.

The Framer in our game will be played by: The Edmonton Blizzard

The Genteman

The Gentleman is a human, but somewhere along the line learned the identity of the Wolves and decided to help them. He knows who the Wolves are, despite not being part of their group and not hanging out with them at night. The Wolves do not know the identity of the Gentleman, and the Gentleman does not participate in Wolf kills. Because the Gentleman is human, without further special powers, he appears as Vanilla to the Seer. His goal is to help the Wolves by causing confusion amongst the Villagers, while trying not to get himself lynched, shot or eaten.

And that wraps up our set up for this game. With the roles sent out, the players will get ready for day one.. Will the villagers weed out the wolves, or will they slowly but surely be eaten at night while turning on each other? Will the Jester end up on the gallows? Who is going to be the MVP for the winning team?

This is a little more complicated with the extra roles, but this is basically the same game we play around the campfire with my wife's family.

We call it Mafia. There's mafia, townspeople, a doctor and a detective.
