Expansion Draft Possibilities
#1

With expansion looming on the horizon I wanted to take a rough look at what the expansion teams will look like. This is by no means perfect because I didn’t take contracts into account since but I did account for the auto protected GMs and assistant GMs as well as doing my best to keep track of retirements. I probably missed a few because I have been in the process of moving but it should be close enough.

I used the default 7 F 4 D 1 G for each team to try and keep it even for the purposes of this article. I’m sure some GMs will opt for the 10 players options but I can’t read minds.

I didn’t look at user activity just raw TPE and create season to decide who to keep and who to expose. I am not and have never been a GM but I did my best to put myself in the big shoes and looking at the numbers decide who should be protected for the best of the organization in the future. Same went for the expansion teams. The goal in my mind was to build a competitive team with veterans so that they wouldn’t get bodied next season and with youth that will develop in the next few seasons.

First off, let’s look at who was protected by each team.

The TPE totals for all the teams including all players available for the expansion draft and players that will retire after this season shake out like this:

BUF 27111
NOL 25346
EDM 24761
CGY 24551
CHI 24543
MAN 24334
HAM 22568
TEX 22212
LAP 21148
NEW 21118
WPG 20144
SFP 19325
MIN 18509
BAP 16391
TOR 15654
TBB 15005

With the protected players set I went about the draft following how it will work on draft night. Ideally I would have done this with someone else to try and get a better feel for not knowing what the other GM is thinking but so is life. I did my best to not favor one team over another and have a game plan for both.

Team A

Goalie
Geezus Kryyst

Defense
Jax Duggan
Nicholas Owens
Oliver Klozoff
Darnell Johnson
Derek Bohne Jr
Liam O'Callaghan

Center
Reid Sutherland
Taylor Johansson

Left Wing
Nicky Pedersen Jr
Cameron Carter II
Rafe Ulrich
Andrey Barbashev II
Ricky Bobby

Right Wing
Barrett Blackwood
Hiro Fujikawa

Total Team TPE: 15888

Team B

Goalie
Ian Venables

Defense
Jules Watt
Simon LeBlanc
Eric Vanderberg
Sven Yxskaft
Magnus Leljestrom
Mikas Bieksa

Center
First-Name Last-Name
Edward Williams
C.T. Carragher

Left Wing
David Kastrba
Nicolaj Muller

Right Wing
Alex Winters
SLATT Potts
Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu
Indigo Trevino

Total Team TPE: 15072

Team A has a bit of a TPE advantage over Team B but Team B has a much larger core of young players setting themselves up for a very strong team in a few seasons.

With the two expansions teams added the team TPE counts now look like this:

BUF 24035
NOL 23019
EDM 22240
CGY 22159
MAN 21471
CHI 20699
HAM 19591
NEW 19157
WPG 18534
TEX 18240
SFP 17314
LAP 17183
MIN 16779
Expansion Team A 15888
Expansion Team B 15072
BAP 14222
TOR 14094
TBB 11179

Both teams will come in on the lower end of the TPE spectrum but won’t be at the absolute bottom which will be good for creating a fan base in whichever cities they end up calling home.

This of course is all a guess. I’m sure some trades will be made to protect players and I know since I started this piece a week ago some trades have been made so my protected lists are already wrong.

This is a pretty interesting piece, however some issues I have with the methodology of the lists and drafts:

- This list seems to be biased against young players, as there is no way that players like Magnus Liljestrom, Sven Yxskaft and Edward Williams, all top-five picks in their draft classes, are getting left unprotected, as well as players like Reid Sutherland and Taylor Johansson, who also had high picks used on them. I'm also confused how I managed to not crack a protection list and not be claimed in expansion. :p

- Several players who can't (Derek Bohne Jr., NTC) or won't (Jax Duggan, Andrey Barbashev II, Ricky Bobby, Mikas Bieksa, Indigo Trevino, all IA) be claimed in expansion made it onto the lists.

- There are options for a goalie that will be left unprotected with a higher ceiling than Ian Venables, such as Samat Beibitzhanov or whichever goalie NOLA doesn't keep.
