Graphs and rankings through Friday 8/8/20 (11/19/21 Sim Date)

Highest ranked: 12
Lowest ranked: 12

Dex: Remaining at 12th is the Nevada Battleborn. Nevada continues to have the worst goals for and goals against in the league, getting blown out twice this week. In spite of this, the team did manage to gather a couple of wins. A lot of their success this week can be attributed to Vermette, Zuntnere, and Wallace as they led the team’s offense, alongside their goaltender Phillip Weaver. However, it wasn’t enough to push them ahead of any other team in the league standings, nor  in the power rankings.

Nham: While ranked 12th for this week, I think that Nevada honestly deserves a lot more credit for their performance this week as they were able to pick up far more points during this time than their expansion counterparts including wins over Quebec and St. Louis. In many of those games, the scores were still relatively close with a handful of them being losses by 2 or less goals. Any positive is a major one for a new team like this.

Highest ranked: 10
Lowest ranked: 11

Dex: A bit of a disappointing week for Quebec as they managed 2 wins early in the week before going on a bit of a losing streak. The team looks to be doing a little better offensively compared to their first week in the league, partially thanks to Rieley who was able to score 6 goals in this week alone. Also, Roach has been carrying the team offensively with 8 more points than the next player. If the Citadelles are able to tighten up defensively, they could potentially move past Vancouver in these power rankings.

Nham: Quebec also found themselves with a couple consecutive wins leading to possibly their first and historic winning streak of their organizations history. However that was only followed by a long almost 10+ game losing streak that seemed to continue to grow in more goals allowed every game. To their credit,  a lot of the significant strengths for their team is the offense. They sit 4th to last in the league in terms of corsi for per game, but also 5th to last in terms of goals scored. For a team that is largely built on rookies and young expansion picks, that’s a lot to be happy about. At this rate, they’ll continue to grow on both sides of the ice if development continues.

Highest ranked: 10
Lowest ranked: 11

Dex: Similar to Quebec, the Vancouver Whalers found a couple wins early in the week but found themselves in a losing streak by the end of it. The Whalers had multiple poor defensive games and their offense wasn’t there to bail them out. The team also saw their goaltender Name Redacted begin to falter as in this past week Redacted put up a below 0.900 save percentage and a goals against average close to 4. If Vancouver continues to play like this, they will see themselves being outplayed by the 2 expansion teams.

Nham: On the flip side of things, Vancouver somehow just couldn’t generate consistent chances for themselves offensively. They still managed to outscore the likes of Detroit, Nevada and St. Louis despite shooting less than everybody Nevada. Johnny Shuffleboard has been a significant contributor on the backend with almost 20% goal contribution. William Hartmann is reaching career highs at this pace but the Whalers will still be asking for more out of their leaders including their goalie Redacted.

Highest ranked: 9
Lowest ranked: 9

Dex: This week the Detroit Falcons just weren't able to find their offense. Their goals for per game this week ranked 2nd worst, just above the Nevada Battleborn. At least the Falcons would be glad to hear that their goaltender Odinson has been performing exceptionally well, regardless of their offense or the outcomes of the game. Odinson posted an above 0.920 save percentage this week in spite of having a goals against average close to 3. The team really needs to find some offense support for their goaltender.

Nham: I think last week I wrote about how the Falcons were able to shake a bit of the negative mojo from last season. That clearly isn’t the case because there’s something even worse going on. Like in a Season 1 to Season 2 Stranger Things “stuff is getting even worse” situation with their offense that has skilled players but is experiencing the worst drought of scoring as well as shot generation. This goes beyond hoping that bounces go their way, there just might need to be a significant shake up.

Highest ranked: 7
Lowest ranked: 8

Dex: The St. Louis Scarecrows went on a good run this week, winning 7 of 12. Although 6 of them were won by 1 goal and the other won by 2 goals, a win is a win and if they can keep it up they can find themselves ahead of the Maine Timber. This win streak can be attributed to some clutch offensive players in spite of the team having similar goals for numbers as Vancouver. To name a few, there’s Lizard who scored 6 goals this week and Jericson who had 3 goals for a defenseman.

Nham: The tight games could be seen as a knock against the Scarecrows for the wins they got, however with them being against teams like Carolina, Maine and Anaheim, the win almost seems like it should be worth more considering how their season started. Nicolae Antonescu has bounced back from a torrid start to being closer to league average and that has been just enough for St. Louis to find some decisive moments to steal a win  here and there.

Highest ranked: 7
Lowest ranked: 8

Dex: The Maine Timber really took a tumble this week in the power rankings. The team that started really hot only managed to win 4 games this week. This wasn’t due to a lack of offense as they are close to the top of the league in that regard. This was due to a poor defensive performance by their defense and goaltending. Their goaltenders are putting up below 0.900 save percentages and this time around their explosive offense just wasn’t enough to pick them up. It certainly doesn’t help that both goaltenders are cold halfway through the season.

Nham: Maine just couldn’t outscore their problems this week. They were around almost 4 goals a game but that wasn’t enough for them to find some more consistency in getting points. It’s a surprising deal considering that their backline is built with a lot of defensively focused defensemen to the point that an offensive style rookie got significant last season. It doesn’t seem like that they have been entirely slacking and more to do with the goaltending that has let the team done with Bloomfield not finding the kind of magic that they seem to have when playing spoiler last season. With some expectations this season, it’ll be interesting how they handle being the favorite coming into games more often than not.

Highest ranked: 6
Lowest ranked: 6

Dex: Back at looking at the competitive Western Conference, the Anaheim Outlaws find themselves below the other Western Conference teams in the power rankings. This is because although the team was able to string a number of wins, most were only by a single goal. Also, other teams in the west certainly took off in the standings both offensively and defensively. Now that the Western Conference is beginning to take shape, it appears that Anaheim and Colorado will be fighting for 3rd, but they still certainly have the chance to snag the 1st or 2nd spot.

Nham: Anaheim has been anything but quietly lately. From winning games wby 3 to 5 goals, to losing the last two by multiple goals, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride as they sit just in the middle of the league in terms of corsi for and against. The defensive leaders of James LeBlond, Emilia Bergman and Ulrik Bergstrom have been heavily involved in the goals scored for the Outlaws with Ethan Price being 5th in the league during this period for scoring.

Highest ranked: 5
Lowest ranked: 5

Dex: As mentioned earlier, Colorado appears to be the other team in the west fighting for 3rd in the conference. The Raptors are still doing well defensively, being a top 5 team in goals against. Offensively, they are doing just as well having a goals per game this week on par with Anaheim, Maine, and Newfoundland. The only thing from this week would be their goaltender who posted a below 0.900 save percentage. However, thankfully the team’s offense was good enough to pick their goaltender up this week.

Nham: I’m hearing that they’re looking to hire a detective, psychotherapist and maybe a seer in order to figure out what it is that’s causing Huuveri to have the performance that he is. It was one thing to have a bad week stretch, but now it’s getting to the point where it’s a regular and expected occurrence that the Raptors are going to be fighting not only their opponents but also their goaltending as they know that consecutive goals will be allowed. They’ve only allowed 1 goal or less twice during this week, and 4 times all season. If you’re regularly expected to score 3 or more in order to have a chance of winning, that’s a tough proposition to fight out of. However they’d been able to do it for the most part so far.

Highest ranked: 4
Lowest ranked: 4

Dex: The Armada this week was able to separate themselves a bit from the rest of the pack in the west. The team is doing exceptionally well both offensively and defensively being 3rd and 2nd in the league respectively. Their forward Chris de Siren was able to get 19 points in this week alone which led all players in points scored for the week. Additionally, Gunnarson had 13 points himself and Petrikov had 11 points as a defenseman. Then there’s their goaltender Scratton who almost posted a 0.950 save percentage this week! Quite an incredible week for Anchorage.

Nham: The Armada has been steadily and sneakily pulling up on everybody. While their defensive group has drawn a lot of attention for being one of the key features of their team along with Scoochie Stratton forming a formidable wall, the key offensive forwards of Chris de Siren, Thorbjorn Gunnarson, Santtu Rasanen and Vyskoc are all heavily carrying the load in their top 6. It wouldn’t be out of the question that they could steal the Western crown from Kelowna in the coming weeks.

Highest ranked: 3
Lowest ranked: 3

Dex: Soaring to the top of the west is the Kelowna Knights. The Knights had the 2nd highest goals for per game this week, the highest corsi, and the lowest corsi against. Everything was just working for the team this week as they had contributions from up and down their lineup. This was certainly highlighted by Hagan who had 18 points this week, 2nd only to de Siren, as well as Takshak also getting 17 points. This is not even mentioning their goaltender Ramsey who had an around 0.930 save percentage. Now the Knights see themselves once again battling for the top of the league.

Nham: Kelowna has not had an completely easy stretch with numerous games against contender quality opponents like Newfoundland, Carolina and Anchorage but still have shown to have the best corsi for and against during this period. While there are a number of games against QCC, NBB and VAN, it’s still impressive they’ve been able to keep up the general shot control, though admittedly without the expected results despite having all that possession. To highlight that and the last point in particular, they’ve been shut out by the Armada twice, having only 1 win of their own against boat team in 3 competitions.

Highest ranked: 2
Lowest ranked: 2

Dex: This week the Kraken’s offense and defense faltered just a tiny bit, but regardless they were able to achieve a number of wins. Primarily, the team’s starting goaltender Blunt Man posted a below 0.900 save percentage. Thankfully though their backup RART was able to play pretty well posting an above 0.925 save percentage. This alongside of their offense in Grimstad, Wagner, and Vitecek was able to keep Carolina at the top of the league as they continue to fight for 1st place.

Nham: Grimstad has been slowly rising in the scoring race in particular. The promotion to the top line has been especially beneficial for the 3rd season centerman as he had been sneaking around 6th in the league in scoring but getting within reaching distance of being the league leader. It’s amazing that they’re able to plug and play as well as they have, though given the over amount of depth of the level of talent that’s on the roster, maybe not so much. They were oh so close to being the #1 seed being seemingly unbeatable besides their 1st loss in the season in the 1st game of the season. However a couple other losses to St. Louis and Maine have made them seem much more human.

Highest ranked: 1
Lowest ranked: 1

Dex: Remaining in the number 1 position are the Newfoundland Berserkers. Similar to the Kraken, the Berserker’s offense was a bit quieter this week compared to the first. None of their players cracked the top 10 in points this week as teams like Kelowna, Anchorage, and Carolina dominated in that regard. However, leave it up to their goaltender Amundsen to pick up the team when they need him. Amundsen had an outstanding goals against average well below 2 and a save percentage above 0.930.

Nham: The story of the Berserkers have moved away from the ridiculous scoring pace of Mats Marner to a much more quiet and subdued performance by the team in general. While they’ve come ahead in majority of their contests, they too have suffered from the long season grind with losses being dropped here and there against Anaheim, Kelowna and Vancouver. They’ve still dominated possession in losses so it’s hard to completely see how much of it was bad(?) puck luck or more of a regression to a more normal means considering the astronomical luck to start the season for some players.

this was my bad, I set the 'minutes played' threshold higher for the SHL version of the graphs, and forgot to change it back when I ran and sent the J version of the graphs to Dex. So the bottom couple starters in terms of games/minutes played got cut off but we'll get you next time.

Edit: Here's that last goalie chart using the current index
