S55 PT #4 - OK What's Your Expansion Team Idea

My idea for an expansion team would have to be based In Florida but not just any part of Florida we’re talking Miami Florida where we’ve seen great sport talents in other sports from the marlins and heat but what this city brings is an atmosphere like no other. First off it’s in Florida so it’s always going to be nice out other than when it starts to rain because it will just pour. The city and the night life are great and any player would be happy to be apart of that city and for visiting teams it would be great because they would also love to tour the city and go to the clubs with the team and get a team lap dance. For branding the team would be called the Miami Suns and the colors would be Yellow, Orange and Purple with the jerseys being a fade between the 3 colors. Why Miami because it’s a great city. The goal horn would be little jon shots because it’s a party city. Also the owner would be mark Cuban because why not

As somebody who just bought a house in Pittsburgh, it would be difficult for me to move. Therefore, I'm opting for something Pittsburgh related. This is where things get difficult, as you can tell Pittsburgh sports teams ran out of names a while back and have resorted to using things lik Penguins for no reason.

Pittsburgh is a great city that is burgeoning and becoming one of the best places to live -- or was until Mayor Peduto and the police force decided to become friendly with each other and shun their duties, but I digress. So I had a few ideas for names nad reasons for it:

The Pittsburgh Giant Eagles is the first one to come to mind, named for the brand founded in Pittsburgh, Giant Eagle is a well known staple in the area and beyond as one of the biggest market/superstore type of stores. In fact, I haven't seen a Wal-Mart in months because of them.

The Pittsburgh River Rats, known for the rivers that intersect into the city, the team would be named for a common sighting nearby the shore.

The Pittsburgh Golden Arches, if you have a lot of rivers guess what else you have? A lot of bridges. Pittsburgh is the city of bridges in America, and honestly nearly tops the world. The majority of bridges are gold suspension bridges with big bright arches, which would be honored here.

A variety of others I've thought of include something to do with Andy Warhol, which could make for fascinating logo and color designs. Also would love to do something relating to Andrew Carnegie or to science considering the Carnegie Science Center here. Ultimately, a name is hard to find for Pittsburgh, and I think I'll settle on the Pittsburgh Pierogis, because I'd love to just steal that race from the Pirates and have it at an event more people may attend than Pirates games -- the SHL sim.

Oh and for colors, that's obvious -- this is the city of black and yellow.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

The SHL and SMJHL don’t have any pre-historic iconography and symbols to any of their teams and I think it would be pretty unique. The Columbian Mammoth is designated the state fossil since 1998 and its always fitting to showcase something from the state itself. A colour scheme of a dark rusty orange, navy, and a pale blue would make for a unique colour palette and isn’t seen on any of the teams in both leagues. The logo itself would be in a crest shape, with the navy on the outside, light blue in the middle. A mammoth throwing its trunk in the air would be the main focal point with the trunk breaking the crest frame in that rust colour, with white for tusks, darker and lighter rust tones for highlights and shadows. A goal horn of manny the mammoth or just mammoth trumpeting would be fun.

So I waited until the end of the week because I wanted to flesh out my team but here it is

Minot Minutemen

The place? Minot North Dakota. It's a small market surely but its close enough to Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton to be a fierce rival. Why the Minutemen? North Dakota is home to a good number of American nuclear missile silos which fire the Minuteman missile. The team colors would reflect the state's colors which are red white and blue as well as the Air Force which calls Minot home. Since those colors are also shared with Winnipeg, the team could incorporate black which would make for a great colored jersey.

The goal horn would be an Air Raid siren, keeping with the missile theme and the goal song could be "End of the World by REM" or pared down to whatever the player picks rather than a generic song.

My expansion idea would be to brand out the SHL in a more intergalactic way and create the Arrakis ShaiHulud's, the Shai Hulud is the sand worm who lives on Arrakis. While Arrakis is not a planet Vorian has lived on himself, his family has a big history there so he would like to honor his family history with this team. The colors for the franchise would be similar to the Steelhawks, the blue and silver as this comes closest to the Atreides family colors. The logo itself would be one of the sand worms emerging from the sand, it's mouth wide open. And for goal song? Well, no real preference there, but it will likely be a range of songs from the metalcore band Shai Hulud. Got to stick to the theme afterall. Ofcourse this is an idea that never will be used as 'we have to remain realistic', but you have to admit that an intergalactic team is much more fun than another random team in another random american/canadian city.

Since @Vandy already kind of took my idea (I was going to go with Cheyenne Peacekeepers though, deactivated in 2005) I’ll go with something else.  Wyoming isn’t even a big hockey market though.  I like yours better anyway.

I’d put a team back in Washington, DC.  I don’t care that there are already a lot of teams on the East Coast.  It’s a populated area and they can support it.  I’d keep it fairly simple and also associate Northern Virginia, or NoVA as it’s known and just call the team the Washington Novas, or Supernovas, whatever works better.  The mascot or logo can be something cosmic like an exploding star or something else that people far more creative than me can come up with.  I mean we already have mythological creatures and boats and the like, so I figure a cosmic event would be pretty cool.  For the color scheme I’d avoid the blue even though that seems to make the most sense.  There’s a lot of blue in the league already.  I’m honestly not sure on colors.  Anyway, I think it could work.

Because all my players have been born in Iceland, if I was in charge of an expansion team, I would place the first ever team outside of Canada or USA in the great city of Reykjavik! What better place to play hockey than in a land of ice! It may seem strange to go to a country and city without a huge population, but the fact is Iceland has been a prime tourist destination for many years, with the link to many scenes from Game of Thrones being shot there, as well a beautiful place to see glaciers and the Northern Lights, or as a gateway stop between Canada and Europe. While I am sure the locals would welcome such a team, it would also attract even more tourists who come to see their team play!

The team would be called Iceland Fire Saga in honor of the Eurovision champs, and of course Ja Ja Ding Dong would be the goal horn song. As well as the intro song. And the between-period entertainment song. And the post-game song. Basically Ja Ja Ding Dong would be played non-stop before, during, and after the game.

My expansion team idea that I was most married to when I submitted my application and one that I hope to one day get to champion in the future is the Portland Pioneers. I have long felt that Portland deserves another shot in the SHL with how unceremoniously their last stint ended. As far as the colors are concerned I want to incorporate the natural wooded colors of the pacific northwest so green and tan would be the main colors prominent on the jersey. As a primary logo I wanted to have a wheel, similar to the logo of the Boston Bruins, but one that is made of wood like a wheel for an old wagon that could have been on the Oregon Trail. In the center of the wheel would be the letter P. For a secondary logo I would want a bearded man in a trapper's raccoon skin hat. I think that in perhaps two or three more real life years it will be time for expansion again and I will take another shot at getting my idea approved.

I've always felt that the SHL doesn't actually take expansion seriously. It's always the same. A new North American team pops up in a place that already has hockey fans and the game continues on exactly the same as it ever was.

What if I told you...fuck North America. In fact...fuck the Earth entirely.

Captured within Earth's gravitational pull, orbiting an average of 239,000 miles away from the surface, is a lovely little untapped hockey market called the moon. And this moon I propose as the site of the newest SHL team: the Lunar Eclipse. The colors of the team would be silver, black, and orange. Silver symbolizing the normal color of the moon, the black symbolizing the umbra of the earth as it creates the phases, and orange symbolizing the color when a lunar eclipse occurs.

The team would have to be in the Eastern conference, as teams traveling to the moon from the East would almost completely fix the imbalance in average travel distance between the Eastern and Western conference cities.

Plus, moon hockey would be dope. Imagine laying a check into someone and have them fly off into the crowd. Imagine a slapshot that would travel bounce off the walls and ceiling 40 times before settling back down to the playing surface. Imagine two guys fighting in low gravity, throwing haymakers while floating feet off the ground, slowly descending back to the surface.

Moon hockey is the future. And the SHL needs to break its insular model and embrace it.

Alright, if I'm an expansion GM, I'm bringing a team back to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The reason I am going there is that I'm from Nova Scotia, and was shocked when I joined this league to see a team here. I would love for us to have an NHL team, but that's unlikely so a SHL team is the next best thing. The name of the team is the Halifax Explosions. Some people may think that names a bit morbid, but I feel like it's a big part of the history of the city and should be honoured. The colours of the team are black and silver with some royal blue and white accents to tie in to the Nova Scotia flag. The goal song would have to be some excerpt from the song "Maritimes" by Classified. I think this team would be quite a success and a team for all of the maritimes to rally around.

If I got to name my own expansion franchise I'd definitely love for it to be in my hometown of Montreal, no city is more deserving of a hockey team after all. I have always been fan of the name "Cannons" so they would be the Montreal Cannons.

The team would go for a more original color scheme, rocking mustard orange unis with red shoulders and stripes at the bottom of the jersey. It would be a flashy jersey for a flashy team.

To celebrate the city's heritage the goal song would be a random mix of old french canadian folk songs. The kids are probably gonna hate it but who cares, kids are dumb anyways.

Also a team in Montreal has to have a coach who speaks french. I don't care if he's never coached a hockey game in his life, if the man knows french, it's enough for me to call him coach.
