NHL'90 - Relive The Glory Days, Over and Over!
#1

NHL '90 Enters Its Seventh Season - Many Opportunities to Join!
With the Toronto Maple Leafs winning their first Stanley Cup since 1967, their General Manager looks for an immediate retool, giving other teams a chance at Lord Stanley's Glory!

What is NHL '90?
NHL '90 is a sim-based league, using a relatively known simulator, UHS, to simulate starting from the 1990-91 NHL season, using the prime ratings of every player from that time up until the current NHL season, 2020-21. We decide to manage, simulate and observe an 'alternate universe' NHL, where Wayne Gretzky goes to New York two years earlier, Jarome Iginla is a rookie in LA, and relative unknowns like Pat Peake and Scott Mellanby score 110+ points in a season! NHL '90 is a low-maintenance, low-strategy needed, all-fun kind of game where the forum itself is made for casuals who just want to enjoy rewriting history. I mean, come on. We already did that recently with the Leafs winning a cup.

Wait, what do you mean by 'prime ratings'?
The administrators, Mike and Justin, decided that instead of using a progression system on the players, that all players would have a determined 'career prime rating', foregoing the possibility of Wade Belak having a superstar rating of 96 because you dipped countless seasons of training on him. Instead, we have a flat rating that does not change from the first to the last year. For example, drafted in the 1995 portion, Jan Hrdina was given an overall rating of 84, given his career statistics and name value. Given that he played in the NHL until the 2005-06 season, he will have 10 full seasons of an 84 rating. It will not go up, it will not go down. You will have 10 seasons of an 84 Jan Hrdina.
*The highest rated player in the game, Wayne Gretzky, is a 97. All other future ratings are determined by the 'Wayne Gretzky Paradox'

How does it work?
You simply sign up to our forum, claim a team, post your team roster in its respective team thread, and you're in! Simple as that! Afterwards, given the seven seasons, you will be greeted by a bunch of other teams either offering you trade deals, or inquiring about one of your players. At that point, your choice is whatever it may be.

How much time do I need to spend on NHL '90?
Quite honestly, not too much. Once the regular season and playoffs roll around, maybe enough to set or change your lines. No need for strategy either. If you want to play your favorite player on the first line, do it! Winnipeg has Wade Belak, a 77, on his defensive pairing, and he's garbage! Once the offseason comes around, you don't need to spend too much more time. Just make sure to be around when your draft pick comes in!

Speaking of, how does the draft work?
Before the beginning of each season, Bob McKenzie drops a list of nearly 70 prospects, and ranks them from who is the most promising, to the least. Once the season ends, you will have a chance to scout six of your choosing - three more accurate reports, and three more broad and 'guessy' reports. If the old man manages to remember what time of the year is, throughout the season you'll get full scouting reports on the top prospects of the draft. Once the draft occurs, the teams go through two rounds of selections. Whoever is not selected go into the free agency auction market.

Wait, Free Agency Auctions?
Yes! There are no contracts with NHL '90. You can keep your players for however long you want to! And any extra players can be bid upon through the Free Agency Auction. Simply say who you're adding, and who you will drop for this player, and within the end of the sim month, the winner goes to the highest bidder, with overall and years remaining on his career taken into account.

But wait. What happens after the 2020-21 season is over?
We start from scratch, back to the 1990-91 season! That 'Era' has ended, and now it's time for a new one! Pick a new team! Trade different players! Expand to different areas of the league! Draft different superstars! Start from a fresh slate!

Okay, I'm sold! What teams are available to choose from right now?
Let me give you a detailed analysis of the teams available!

Boston Bruins - Beantown's Finest are in high spirits after this previous season's President's Trophy Finish. A consistent playoff mainstay in the Adams division, Boston found everything right in the regular season, boasting four 100-point scorers in Joel Otto, Ray Bourque, Cory Stillman and Ray Whitney. But it didn't end there, 90-point plus efforts from Brian Smolinski, Kevin Hatcher, Brendan Shanahan and Dale Hawerchuck, along with 50 win goaltender, Jennings winner and Vezina candidate Olaf Kolzig led the B's to a 56-win, 115 point season. However, despite winning the Prince of Wales, and advancing to the finals, they could not end the swan song of Glenn Anderson in misery, as the Leafs triumphed in Game 7. Will you be the one to get the Bruins back to glory and win the cup?

Chicago Blackhawks - An up and down franchise, the Hawks managed to get the five seed in the Campbell Conference playoffs, but ended up losing to Los Angeles in five games. However, the team is coming along very nicely, with tough and gritty players leading the way to an 83-point affair. Despite not looking like much, the top line of Mike Ricci, Petr Sykora and Pat Verbeek fought tooth and nail to get this team far enough. What this team needs is to find that separation between good and great - they're right on the cusp, perhaps it needs a big name player to do it. Will you help them get over the hump and become a powerhouse?

Hartford Whalers - The Whalers seem to have been going backwards since the first season. After playoff appearances in the first four seasons, the Whalers haven't eclipsed 50 points and have been last in the Adams the last two seasons. The team looks gutted, being led by Freddy Modin's 81 points, but it is clear that the team needs a massive overhaul. However, recent offseason acquisition of superstar Daniel Alfredsson to possibly help the aid of Curtis Joseph might start the slow build. Or, perhaps more time is needed. After drafting Daniel Briere 3rd overall in the 1996 Draft, could the Whalers tank again for the services of Joe Thornton? With this team, it's yours to decide!

Los Angeles Kings - After winning the 1995 Lottery and selecting Jarome Iginla with the 1st pick, Los Angeles went from zeroes to heroes, finishing 2nd in the Smythe, and securing the 4th seed in the Campbell. Iginla's rookie season was a spectacular one, posting 66 assists and 99 points, alongside Doug Weight's 119 and Martin Gelinas' 100. But sophomore Ryan Smyth made his presence known as well with his 98 points. The Kings breezed past the Boston Bruins in 5 games, but met their fate as they were bulldozed by the eventual champion Maple Leafs in a series sweep. The Kings made a recent splash, acquiring Alexei Zhamnov from the Canucks, in hopes to keep up with the powerhouses of the league. Will you help them stay afloat?

New York Islanders - Bought by the famous entrepreneur Donald Trump by the start of the 1991-92 season, the future President of the United States made it his mission to 'Make America's Team Great Again', despite Long Island being notoriously known as 'Not America's Team', and started a non-US genocide of the team, banishing anyone who wasn't American elsewhere. However, this brought him many great talents among the seasons. Bill Guerin, Brett Hull, Pat LaFontaine and Mike Richter slowly came crawling to the Islanders, but saw little results. However, the three-team trade with Edmonton and Calgary saw new 1995 draftee Bryan Berard come to the Islanders, and everything seemed to change. A 104 point season, and unexpected monster seasons from Pat Peake (108) and Bob Sweeney (116 points), and multiply with the emergence of new-American star Jim Carey, the Isles fans were given hope, and a playoff appearance for the first time in this Era. However, management decided to trust on Richter in the first round, and it proved to be their downfall, as they lost to Buffalo in 5 games. Will you continue the American Dream with DJT, or will you dismantle it for a new vision?

Philadelphia Flyers - An Era without Eric Lindros as a Flyer? Say it ain't so, Shoeless Joe. But, perhaps Lindros was never needed, and Mark Messier was instead. The Flyers narrowly won the Patrick division, edging out the Islanders by one tie, and the Flyers were indeed flying high. 115 points from Messier, paired up with Rocket Richard winner Tony Amonte, scoring 63 goals in this campaign. Seasons from Stumpy Thomas (107), Glen Murray (102) and Michael Nylander (105 points) helped support the Philly offense. The defense supported by the backstop work of Nikolai Khabibulin, a 45 win season for him, and the Flyers were playoff bound. However, tragedy struck when they were suprisingly ousted by the 7-seed Quebec Nordiques in a deciding seventh game. This team could use your guidance to help them continue their dominant season. Will you help them get over their own hump?

*NEW* Quebec Nordiques - Ah, so this is the Era where Eric Lindros accepts the fact he'll play for Quebec. Okay, weird time paradox we have here. Anyways, fresh off a Stanley Cup victory of their own in the 1994-95 season, The Nordiques looked a little more off this season, perhaps the post-cup woes that everyone fears happens to their winning team. With down years from Lindros (84), Mats Sundin (83), Jeremy Roenick (77) and Steve Sullivan (51 points), the Nords were led by Shane Doan, as his 97 points got the Nordiques over the hump and back into the playoffs. In those playoffs, we saw the early playoff heroics of rookie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, as the Nords eeked by the Flyers in 7 games, but ultimately lost to the Boston Bruins in 5 games in the conference semi-finals. A failed relocation to Colorado has caused the current General Manager to step down (the real reason was a lack of personal time, but for storyline reasons we'll stick with no-Colorado). Will you see his vision of the Avalanche being born, or will you keep the Nordiques in Quebec City and try to reclaim the Cup you had one just one year prior?

If any of this interests you, please sign up to our forum and sign up with a team today! Any questions, feel free to come to me, or contact one of the administrators, Justin (Edmonton) or Mike (Toronto).
