Goal tending would have to be the very best part, or rather my favorite part about the game of hockey. Think about it, you get to play the whole game, put on cool gear, stop blistering shots or if no shots against, well you have the best view on the ice. I love goal tending and this is why I am dedicating my first piece of media (2x first article) to the greatest goalies to ever lace the skates and dawn the goalie pads in the history of the SHL. Going back to the very beginning where it all started.
The history of the SHL spands well over 50 seasons, in fact we are embarking on our 56th season in a couple of days time. I have but a couple of resources at hand that I will be using and one is the Hall of Fame history thread and the second being the link located at the very top of the forum site under "more" called Bojobox. In order to find the very first goalie to be inducted into the SHL Hockey Hall of Fame, my search begins here: Season 8 Class
G - Jonathan Kane would seem to have a shortened career as only season 3, 4 and 6 are found recorded in the archives. Apparently he did play a total of seven seasons in the SHL including the inaugural season 1. With only 90 games played and 41 wins to his credit, Kane found a way to mark the SHL, and managed to put his hands on the illustrious Challenge Cup on two occasions, in season one and six.
Season 13 Class
G - Mike O'Brien also with a shortened career, I've been told this was the normal back then so we will have to make do with the stats available. There are no major awards shown and only two seasons of stats available. Minimal information on the goalie is given and therefore will move on.
Season 14 Class
G - John McBride starts off my search with a little more meat around the bone. Bojobox shows recorded a total of 8 seasons from season 6 to season 13. For those who don't know, this goalie marked the SHL as ab award was named after him. "The Mcbride" equivalent to a "Vezina" is awraded to the very best goalie of the league. Quite the honor if you ask me!. In his career, Mcbride played 396 games and piled up 212 wins 114 losses with 19 shut outs.
In his trophy room we find:
Season 15 Class
G - Jordin FourFour will end the drought in S27 for goalie inductees. 44 played from season 15 to 25 and together SHL and International combined games he played a total of 528 gmes in his career. With 283 wins and an amazing 45 shut outs. He captured many awards along the way including a back to back Challenge Cup championship.G - Ryan Jesster began his SHL career in season 3 and ended 12 seasons later being season 14. Although he managed to win mutiple awards around the league, he will probably be better known for the incredible statistical season he had in season 10 where in 45 games played he had a 39-3-2 record with 4 shut outs. In his trophy room we find:
Season 19 Class
G - Brandon Sawyer played 10 seasons in the SHL and accumulated 441gp with a record of 243 wins 157 losses 38 ties and 21 shut outs. Playing from season 6 to 15, Sawyer had a career year in S11 when he went 31-9-0 with 3 shut outs. His trophy case sports:
Season 20 Class
G - Tom Corcoran played a total of 8 seasons in the SHL from season 6 to season 13. In total he played 377 games and finished with a remarkable record of 216-120-35 with 25 shut outs. In season 10 he posted a career high 38 wins with only 2 losses. That season he allowed but 93 goals against in 44 games played. He followed up the amazing season with another just as good, going 32-11-1. Trophy case boasts:
G - Mike Honcho first goalie in the Hall of Fame to have a somewhat long career playing in 14 seasons from S3 to S16 where he has amassed 471 games played. His record shows 271-141-56 with 16 shut outs. Reached the 30 wins in a season plateau on two occasions, S4 with Edmonton 33-2-4 and again in S7 with Toronto. Looking behind the trophy case we find:
Season 27 Class
Season 29 Class
G - CJ James career span from season 15 to S25 where he just got to 200 wins. Playing in 406 games he picks up 30 shut outs along the way. His best statistical season came in a Panthers uniform in season 20 where he went 22-11-7 with 4 shut outs. But his most memorable one was in a Manhattan uniform where he captured the Challenge Cup in season 22. Trophy room includes:
Season 30 Class
G- Jackson Weekes left his mark on the SHL but without ever winning the Challenge Cup. In 495 games played in his career which played out from season 18 to season 28 and put together a 271-162-53 record with 37 shut outs. He hit the 30 wins in a sigle season three times, S22 and S24 with the Panthers and again in S28 with Texas. The awards piled up:
Season 32 Class
G - Jakub Aittokallio began his career in season 14 and went right through to season 30, all along with one organization the Edmonton Blizzard. In season 15 he back stopped the Blizzard with 32 wins and only 5 losses and won his first of a back to back Challenge Cup repeat. He won it a third time in season 28, again the Blizzard riding his coattails with a record of 28-8-1. An illustrious career no doubt, playing in 798 games played and getting 451 wins. Besides being nominated for the Mcbride on 4 other occasions, he has this to show for his career:
Season 33 Class
G - Jakob Tanner played 597 games in his career from season 19 to S31. A great goalie blessed with great success as he captured the Challenge Cup a total of 4 times with two different organizations. Twice with Hamilton and twice with New England, together in his career he played 597 games with International play included. Manged 311 wins and 29 shut outs.
Season 35 Class
G - Edwin Ask played from season 10 all the way through season 27 where he compiled an amazing record of 303 wins, 170 losses and 42 ties in 516 games played. All the while picking up 45 shut outs and only one Challenge Cup.
Season 39 Class
G - Robert Andersson played from season 25 to season 37 where he finished off his career with 628 games played and a record of 340-230-53 and getting 37 shut outs. Failed to get his hands on a Challenge Cup but did win one Mcbride in season 36 and was nominated 5 other times for the best goalie award. Has a trophy case filled with awards but I am sure would give them all up for one Challenge Cup.
Season 40 Class
G - Colin Schmidt career started in season 18 with the Detroit Falcons of the SMJHL and made the jump to the SHL by season 20 with the Platoon where he played until season 36 calling it a carerr. In total with both international and SHL play, Schmidt put together 338 wins against his 245 losses, never won a Challenge Cup but did win two Mcbrides among other awards.
Season 41 Class
G - Brett Broadway is another Blizzard goalie great to ake the Hall of Fame. After spending 3 seasons playing in junior with Halifax and collecting just over 60 wins (62), Broadway entered the SHL in season 28 as a rookie and collected but 6 wins in a limited role. By season 30 he had established himself as the number one goalie and put together a remarkable run of with 4 straight seasons with at least 25 wins to his credit.
Season 42 Class
G - Mike Verminski joined the Calgary Dragons in season 12 and played his whole career in the Dragons uniform until season 29. Along the way Verminski won two Challenge Cups and two Mcbrides among many other awards. Career stats were ridiculously good posting 260 wins and only 183 losses. The trophy cabinet is stocked:
Season 43 Class
G - Mark Harter has a staggering 920 games played in his career, whether it be at the SMJHL, SHL or even international level. A career that lasted two decades and all with 3 organizations. SMJHL Kelowna Knights, SHL Toronto North Stars and international with the Russian Federation.
(2640 word count)
Season 44 Class
G - Timo Haas played but only 8 seasons but was a dominant goalie nonetheless. Both SHL and international play combined, he played 436 games and mangaged 251 wins. Seasons 34 and 39 were the ones that left a mark although never winning the Challenge Cup he did acheive the Mcbride, the Honcho and the Ron Mexico.
Season 50 Class
G - Artom Zhumbayev played 12 years and attained the 30 wins plateau on 3 different occasions helping him bring his career win totals to 365. Winner of the Challenge Cup in S44, won the Mcbride in S41 and S43 and was also nominated for it in S45.
Season 51 Class
G - Michael McFadden thus far after 50 plus seasons is the only goalie so far to attain the 1000 games played plateau. Starting his junior career in season 27 until he called it wuits in season 48. Remarkably, the last 5 seasons of his career he played in Toronto he still maintained a high work load with 44 plus starts per season. As good as he was with 2 Mcbride awards throughout his career he also was nominated four more times. He never fulfilled his dream of winning the Challenge Cup. With 570 wins and multiple awards has earned him a spot in the Hall of Fame.

Great media. Excited to be part of the great history of the goalie position in this league. I still regret retiring Haas so early every day I log into this site...
