I’ve been advocating for this in various discord locker rooms for seasons now. Allow goalies to position swap from the time their rookie season concludes, up until the SHL draft. It’s not rocket science.

whats the argument for limiting it at all? Just the stats being different?

My take is that a system allowing position swaps whenever is that it would likely be abused. Only allowing it from the time your rookie season ends up until you get drafted to the SHL allows SMJHL and SHL GMs to better plan their roster for the future, and would likely limit any potential abuse of the system. Make this minor change and then if we still have a saturated goalie market in a few seasons, we could reassess.

It sucks that goalies get locked in as soon as their player is created and 1. Either have to retire or 2. Likely have to be a backup for a long time at the SHL level before they can become a starter

As for the solution to the too high cap-hit problem. Just make an open bid system that starts at a $3m. Allows all teams a chance to sign the player and if teams would sign them above minimum, they'll still have the opportunity.

The player would need to engage the process but yeah. There would also need to be some guidelines in place to prevent exploitation. Like if Cain could start that process now, he might be able to get a contract. If someone at a more desirable position tried it, I highly doubt a team would be able to snag them below minimum.

Also once it's started the player has no choice, top-bidder gets the player.
