Road to the #1 Pick

First article of a series to be published during the season to track the SMJHL S57 prospects and their development coming towards the S57 draft.

The season has just begun, but for the S57 SMJHL prospects, the clock is ticking until arguably one of the most defining moment of their young careers. The SHL Draft. SHL GMs scout every prospect thoroughly on every aspect of their person, on and off the ice. The value of a draft pick in the SHL is important enough for a franchise that a pick should represent as less as possible a guess. Sure, some prospects are picked on their possible upside and their potential, but those hidden gems are rarely picked with the first pick. That first pick has a special meaning on a player's resume. It means to a franchise that you are the prospect who is the best balance of talent and probable to keep progressing. First picks did not lead to tanking as a strategy for teams for nothing, it represents a turning point for a franchise.

How are prospects evaluated?
  • Cultural fit - How well is a prospect going to fit with his future team? Age, interests, personality, beliefs, all these factors are key to keep a player motivated to train hard an develop. An unhappy player won't see the benefit of working hard for a team he does not believe in.
  • Positional requirement - Obviously, a team will draft to fit their needs in terms of position. This can cause for trades on draft day and cause players dropping off the board, but the market for players is changing every year. A draft pick is a strategic investment, and this aspect is one that can't be controlled by the prospects, other than being versatile in their skills to play another position.
  • Activity levels - Drafting a SMJHL prospect for SHL GMs also means trying to find a player who will remain active. It's easy to stay active until the draft, where you have something to prove, but GMs need a player who will give them the most constant progress past the draft.
  • TPE - The most obvious and to a certain extent - representative - indicator of a hard working and active player is the total points he has earned. Responsible for a player's stats, TPEs are only available in a finite amount, so they can also be used as an activity level monitor.

Since the season has just begun, that we are far from knowing what the draft order will look like, and thus anticipating the positional requirements and cultural fits, this article will only use TPE to evaluate prospects. Next articles will feature activity levels, TPE gained since last article and others, but since this is the first week, the first prospect ranking will rely solely on TPE. The ranking might seem basic, and it is, but it would be useless to rate players on their activity levels, game stats and others on the first week of the season.

PROSPECTS TO WATCH

Kraken RW Kyle Murray (198 TPE) Kraken
S56 SMJHL Draft : 59th overall (5th round)
S57 SHL Draft (Expected) : 24th overall (2nd round)
When many teams said "Pass", Carolina took a chance. Kyle Murray surpassed every expectation and worked his way to turn Carolina's into one of the S56 SMJHL draft's biggest steal so far. Murray keeps earning ice time as he keeps training hard and paving his way as one of the biggest surprise of the S56 SMJHL draft. Expected to be drafted in the 2nd round as of right now, who knows how high Murray can get in the rankings if he keeps up his work ethic.

Raptors LD Robert Feltersnatch (203 TPE) Raptors
S56 SMJHL Draft : 44th overall (4th round)
S57 SHL Draft (Expected) : 22nd overall (2nd round)
Another late pick who started paying off during the offseason, Robert Feltersnatch quickly focused on becoming a useful player for the Raptors. Although he was the 3rd LD drafted coming in the fourth round, Feltersnatch saw the opportunity to stay competitive and work among other prospects to establish himself as a versatile player who understands what it means to be a teammate. His hard work and determination earned him already above 16 minutes of ice time in this first week, and it seems the best is yet to come for Robert as Colorado has not been defeated in 5 matches.

Battleborn RD Rude Sniff (230 TPE) Battleborn
S56 SMJHL Draft : 24th overall (2nd round)
S57 SHL Draft (Expected) : 4th overall (1st round)
This list of prospects to watch wouldn't be complete without Sniff's insane leap into the top 5 discussion for the SHL S57 Draft. The late 2nd rounded catapulted in discussion for the top 5 pick, which is contested fiercely by 6 SMJHL top prospects. Unique defenseman with magic hands, Rude Sniff quickly stood out from other prospects for his puckhandling abilities as a defenseman. He leads a group of 3 Battleborn prospects in the top 10, himself along with Rob Wright and Jarmo Kekalainen on a quest to keep turning heads at their progress.

CLOSING STATEMENT
The 56th season of the SMJHL still holds a lot of surprises and storylines along the way. This is a very early and simple look at the top prospects coming into the S57 SHL Draft. Future editions of Road to the S57 #1 Pick will feature other factors such as Activity Levels, TPE differential and TPE potential at the end of the season, leading to a more dynamic ranking with the rise and fall of prospects. Please keep in mind this is only for entertainment and is not representative of the upcoming SHL Draft.

That being said
