Backup Goalie Insight
#1

This article is going to be a little look into the current line up of back up goalies. Starting with the most played games and ending with the least. Hopefully you enjoy the little insight that has been put together on index stats and personal experience. All but one goalie has reached the minimum starts for a back up. As this is my first season I am currently only focusing on this one and not looking back into previous seasons. Everyone will be judged on the same idea of starts/GGA/SV%/shutouts. Enjoy!

Scoochie Stratton, ANC, 16 games played.

Stratton has played and started a total of 16 games for the ANC. Putting them at number one of the list due to an interesting situation in NBB. With a current record of 8-7-1, Stratton seems to be doing prettier even as a backup which really is the goal. Bringing his team a total of 17 points. Strattons GAA is pretty high sitting at 3.14, but with a few updates and some practice it is likely that we’ll see that average go down over time. As that average goes down we will also see their SV% go higher as they’re currently sitting at the lower end of the table. However among back ups they’re not that far off of moving up. Stratton does have a shutout this season which is more than some starters can say. Not a great season so far but also not a bad one.

Philip Weaver, NBB, 16 games played
C.K Supernaw, NBB, 16 games played

So both of the NBB goalies have played the same amount of games. So I don’t know if you could qualify either of these as a back up. It seems to be more of a 1a 1b situation. Either way I need money and words so we’re gonna look at them both equally. Supernaw is currently leading in record with 11-4-1. Bringing his team 23 points. Weaver has a positive record of 9-6-1. Bringing his team a total of 19 points. Both have been doing well with positive records this season and that’s not surprising as NBB is one of the top three teams in the west. Weaver is currently holding a shutout over Supernaw. Though Supernaw holds the better GGA and SV%. It will be interesting to see if NBB continues this trend throughout the playoffs. Or if we will see a decided starter come then.

Jon St. Ark, VAN, 15 games played.

Jon St. Ark is currently our most winning backup with a record of 12-3. Totaling 24 points for his team. With a goals against average of 1.66 and two shutouts on the year. It’s not surprising to see VAN be the top team in the west. Both their starter and backup have had stellar seasons so far. Ark is currently sitting at number one in goals against average. And third overall (second among games played) in SV%. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ark with the starting position next season. Either way VAN seems to be in good hands with whoever is in net.

Damien Vertigo, KEL, 14 games played.

Vertigo is currently going near dead even with a record of 5-5-3. A total of 14 games played, meaning they were called into a game. Vertigo has brought his team 13 points on the season. Though he has a decent GGA of 2.61, rocking in the middle of the backup pack. Vertigo has played pretty well it seems. But hasn't been able to secure the wins that he might have hoped for. KEL is currently having a rough season, so this maybe a season that Vertigo and the rest of his team just wish to be swept under the rug.

Marcel LaFlamme, COL, 12 games played.

LaFlamme has a positive season so far with a record of 6-5 on 12 games played. Meaning that they were also called into a game. LaFlamme hasn't seen any over time loses this season which is good for a goalies confidence and the confidence of the team. LaFlamme however is the current holder of the most shutouts. Tied with NL's started Cale Amundsen with a total of three. LaFlamme has only brought a total of 12 points for his team this season. COL has been struggling this season. With their starter only playing 10 more games but having a worse over all record. LaFlamme is currently rocking a 2.36 GGA and a save% of .941. Both of which are good numbers and you're likely to see them get better if COL is able to pick it up later in the season.

Ragnar-Alexandre Ragnarss, CAR, 11 games played

Ragnarss has been doing well for themselves with 11 games played. They currently hold a record of 7-4-0. A middle of the pack GGA with 2.52 and a save of .913. Ragnarss is fulfilling his role as a back up giving his team 14 points. With CAR being at the top of the east. Ragnarss could see some more starts going into the playoffs. One unique things for Ragnarss is, as of writing this, they currently have 666 minutes played. Maybe that is a sign for CAR's good standings at the moment. Might be something worth looking into. But either way Ragnarss has been playing well and I believe that he will do well if/when he takes over as the starter. Rangarss is one of the 7 back ups to have a shutout this season as well.

Tyler Ward, QCC, 11 games played

Tyler Ward was a late entry into the SHL. Being created shortly after the draft there was a chance that he wouldn’t be on a team that season. However he was approached rather quickly by the GM’s of the QCC. Who offered him a contract as their back up goalie. Obviously wanting to play Ward signed quickly and thus began his rookie season. Of course as a backup goalie, you don’t expect to get much playing time. You make the most of what you get and hope to be promoted to starter. Such is the way of a goalies life. And Tyler has come out and done just that. With a record of 7-2-1, he stands in a solid second place among backup goalies. Rocking the second lowest GAA with 1.77 and the second highest (or highest among games started) with a .938. Wards season didn’t start off very well with a 1-4 loss. However he has managed to pull it back with a few wins. Including one impressive three game win streak when the starter was called up to Chicago. This streak was also where Ward achieved his first shutout, now totaling two on the season.

Richard Majors, STL, 9 games played

Majors has played a total of 9 games for STL. However he has only started 6 of them. With a record of 2-4 Majors isn't doing too well with only 4 points out of a possible 12. STL sits just 2 points above QCC at the moment and it seems to be a very tight race going into the end of the season. Majors is sitting with a GGA of 3.30 and a SV% of .878. Like everyone else we could see Majors improve with some more starts.

Keisuke Suzuki, ANA, 8 games played

Suzuki has been doing rather well with their starts. With a record of 6-2, Suzuki is holding 16 out of a possible 20 points. With a GGA of 2.63 and a SV% of .912, Suzuki is having a good season as ANA's backup. Also one of the 7 backup's who have a shutout. With their team being second in the west. I wouldn't be surprised to see Suzuki get a couple more starts going into the playoff. See if they can keep up with the performance they have already put on.

Bigga Foryu, MET, 7 games played

Foryu is rocking a 4-3 record. Giving his team a total of 8 points this season. With only 7 games played having a positive record is impressive. With a current GGA of 3.22, Foryu is close Stratton in this stat with a little less then half of games played. Foryu has a chance to improve this number if they get more starts. But there is also the chance of the numbers going in the opposite direction.

Hugo Gronroos, NL, 7 games played

Gronroos has played 7 games for NL with a record of 1-3-2. Totaling 4 points for his team. Having a high GGA of 3.90, he is currently considered the worst in the league among backups. Though we could see these numbers improve with more starts. It will be interesting to see which direction NL goes as they are currently top 3 in the east.

Tyler Avery, DET, 1 game played

There is currently not much to say about Avery. He has played in 1 game for 40 minutes. Meaning that he was pulled in after DET's starter got chased. Avery will have to play more games here soon due to the backup goalie minimum. But as of now there isn't much to go off of.
