Ep 4 : The stage is set
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The trade deadline has passed, we now have 61 prospects for the S57 SHL Draft currently signed with an SMJHL team. The Draft. One of the most significant moment for a SHL hockey player. It will define the legacy of every prospect, if they will win any awards, if they will develop to their potential, if they will ever win the Cup. For GMs, scouting is almost an art. In a limited amount of time and conversation, they have to find out the personality, values and determination of prospects, and choose which will be the best investment of their draft pick. There will be gems, there will be busts. In the end, your actions will decide which one you will be. Previous articles [1] How are prospects evaluated? Part 1 : Link [2] How are prospects evaluated? Part 2 : Link [3] The SHL GMs Scouting Process : Link Weekly Article [4] Mini-Article : TPE Value of S56 SMJHL Draft Picks Lacking inspiration for a relevant article, I decided to do a little experiment to find out how much the draft picks used in the S56 SMJHL Draft were worth in retrospect. Data is used from active players, simply taking average of TPE per draft round. I'll come back with a better article next week! SMJHL Draft Pick Value in TPE (Based on averages, S56) Round 1 - 248 TPE Round 2 - 240 TPE Round 3 - 201 TPE Round 4 - 196 TPE Round 5 - 180 TPE Round 6 - 155 TPE To be honest, I did not expect round 1 and round 2 to have such a little difference in TPE. Of course, this is very inconclusive and based on averages on who had the most actives players, but it does clear up some trades in the trade deadline in terms of value. Round 6 makes sense that the TPE would be the same as a new player. Most teams pass their picks at this round, it is fair to say that at this round, GMs might sometimes try a Hail Mary on an inactive player, I've yet to find a story that made this happen! Freyja Hellstrom worked hard all season. 17.91% shooting percentage, only 10 PIM, 58 Game Rating, all in a remarkable 13:20 of TOI. This week, Freyja earned a whopping 31 TPE to enter the top 3. The competition in the top 5-10 is ferocious, and Freyja fought for glory, but Hellstrom kept a surprising push as the season is coming to an end. As GMs started scouting, Hellstrom is sure to be on every GM's priority scouting report.

Maybe not slow, but steady does win the race. Ask Rob Wright, who just entered the top 10. The Nevada forward kept a steady amount of TPE and stayed focused on looking determined and reliable, qualities that will surely work in his favor at the SHL Draft. Wright also displayed a strong work ethic this season, using every second out of his slim 9:50 of TOI to register 17 pts and a positive differential. Versatile on the ice, steady in his training, Rob Wright deserves the top 10.

This week again, I am speechless when it comes to Jon St. Ark. Usually, when a player jumps in the rankings, he remains the same rank or drops the week after. But Jon just won't give up. Those 25 extra TPE he earned this week allowed him to lower his GAA to 1.57, and adding 7 wins to his resume. St. Ark represents everything a GM could want as #1 overall, and he deserves the rank for sure. Statistical machine with a legendary work ethic, anyone who drafts the Vancouver goalie will be rewarded with one of the most exciting prospects in the SHL. I, for one, cannot wait to see him develop in the SHL.
CLOSING STATEMENT
Thanks for reading, and I hope you appreciated this week's edition. As the weeks advance, there is less information to give out in the form of articles, and I will focus on draft rumors and speculations as the draft order will be set. As always, feedback is appreciated and taken into consideration. Thanks for the comments in the past weeks.

Very top heavy draft. Great talent at the top. Sucks not everyone stayed active. But interested to see how this shakes out!
Shoutout to my boy @Arkz for being a boss. SMJHL goalie of the year and rookie of the year, easily. ![]() ![]() ![]() ACP Access Senior Member ![]() Registered Senior Member |
