GM Trades - Trades Double Media  (x2 - 835 words)

I wanted to look at GMs who have made the most trades in SHL history and some different takes on those trades.

So first here is the total count of trades for each team.

Team - Count - Season
Tampa Bay - 230 - S1
Baltimore - 222 - S1
Manhattan - 217 - S2
Hamilton - 216 - S1
Toronto - 213 - S1
Edmonton - 212 - S2
Los Angeles - 176 - S5
Minnesota - 166 - S5
New England - 161 - S10
Texas - 159 - S10
San Francisco - 126 - S25
Winnipeg - 121 - S1
Calgary - 119 - S1
Buffalo - 107 - S25
Chicago - 30 - S46
New Orleans - 29 - S46
Seattle - 7 - S56
Atlanta - 1 - S56

It is not surprising that the top 6 teams are all teams that were founded in S1 or S2, and all 6 teams have made over 200 trades. A very surprising stat is that Winnipeg and Calgary, which were both founded in S1, are ranked 12th (121 trades) and 13th (119 trades). So these two teams have made about half the amount of trades as the other teams. Both teams seem to make the their money through the draft as Calgary has 8 Challenge Cups and Winnipeg has 6 Challenge Cups.

Now let's look at the top 15 GMs total trade count.

TEAM - GM - COUNT
Los Angeles - Wasty - 122
Edmonton - Teztify - 80
Baltimore - JR95 - 75
Hamilton - Hallsy - 74
New England - Ace - 74
Buffalo - WannabeFinn - 67
Winnipeg - leafs4ever - 60
San Francisco - Grapehead - 58
Calgary - steelhead77 - 57
Tampa Bay - Gifter of Bikes - 56
Toronto - JNH - 53
Toronto - jkrever - 50
Texas - Dankoa - 46
Manhattan - JayWhy - 45
Edmonton - Karlssens - 44

So with the total amount of trades in each teams history and the total amount of trades that each GM has made, lets see how what the percentage of trades each GM has accounted for in their teams history.

TEAM - GM - GM Trades - Team Trades - Percentage
Los Angeles - Wasty - 122 - 176 - 69.32%
Buffalo - WannabeFinn - 67 - 107 - 62.62%
Winnipeg - leafs4ever - 60 - 121 - 49.59%
Calgary - steelhead77 - 57 - 119 - 47.90%
San Francisco - Grapehead - 58 - 126 - 46.03%
New England - Ace - 74 - 161 - 45.96%
Edmonton - teztify - 80 - 212 - 37.74%
Hamilton - Hallsy - 74 - 216 - 34.26%
Baltimore - JR95 - 75 - 222 - 33.78%
Texas - Dankoa - 46 - 159 - 28.93%
Toronto - JNH - 53 - 213 - 24.88%
Tampa Bay - Gifter of Bikes - 56 - 230 - 24.35%
Toronto - jkrever - 50 - 213 - 23.47%
Edmonton - Karlssens - 44 - 212 - 20.75%
Manhattan - JayWhy - 45 - 217 - 20.74%

Wasty has accounted for almost 70% of all Los Angeles trades ever. Pretty impressive. It shows his highly active GM style and his longevity. Wasty was able to get 1 Challenge Cup during his tenure in S17. Now the next group of GMs (WannabeFinn, leafs4ever, and steelhead77) have accounted for about half of their teams trades with WannabeFinn accounting for over 60%. But these 3 GMs have collectively won 13 Challenge Cups (Steelhead77 holds the GM record with 6 Challenge Cups).

Teztify and JR95 are the 2 other GMs of note here. They are #2 and #3 on the GM total trade list, and they have won 4 (Teztify) and 3 (JR95) Challenge Cups.

I believe that making trades is a major factor in teams success. Yes you may not win every single trade you make, but as long as you get the players that help your team that is what makes the difference. You can also look at making trades for draft picks as a key to success as well.

So lets look at GMs who have traded / traded for the most draft picks.

Wasty just blows everyone else out of the water in the trade department. He has made the most trades, acquired the most draft picks (101), and traded away the most draft picks (97). Too bad Wasty is no longer a GM because if you wanted a trade done he would be your guy.
Another interesting note is once again, Teztify and JR95. Both have traded away more picks than acquired. Which would fit that these GMs are willing to deal draft capital to acquire the perfect players for their team. So far both seem to have a knack for it.

What about a look at GM trades/season? Wasty may have top totals but perhaps there are other GMs who traded more often during their shorter tenure

Wally would probably crack this list if it was trades per season I'd imagine. He was very active in his handful of seasons. The fact that I have less than 50% of the franchise's trades when I was GM for a higher percentage of time speaks to Wally's trade average with Portland.

This was a really great piece to read, thank you for sharing.
