S56 has been quite exciting thus far, but not much success for the Kelowna Knights as we stay the course on our rebuild. We’ll be back on top soon enough as our rookies continue to develop. Until then, let’s take a quick look at the most successful team thus far this season, a divisional rival sadly, the Vancouver Whalers!

The Whalers have compiled a 37-10-0 (74P) record through 47GP, leading the SMJHL with a .787-win percentage. They’ve done this with a 3.40GFA and 2.04GAA, which rank 3rd and 1st respectively, winning 24 games by a margin of 2+ goals. They’ve established a propensity to get the job done within regulation time but haven’t been slouches in extra time either. They’ve won their sole OT game against us, the Kelowna Knights, and finished off all 3 shootout games against the St. Louis Scarecrows, Detroit Falcons, and Maine Timber.

Now, let’s delve into the roster that’s behind this success!

Goalies: We’ve got a bit of a 1A, 1B situation going on here between the S54 vet Name Redacted and S57 rookie Jon St. Ark having played 20 and 17 games, respectively, despite a large difference in TPE.
S54 – G – Name Redacted – 789 TPE: Name’s doing well for himself, with a .902 save % on 23.6 shots against each game. He’s been perfect two times this season. Honestly, this would be more of a talking point if it weren’t for Jon’s remarkable rookie season.
S57 – G – Jon St. Ark – 277 TPE: Rookie goalie seasons don’t get much better, 19 wins, only 3 losses, .931 save % on 22 shots against per game, and a sparkling 1.56GAA to boot. Keep an eye on this guy as he keeps getting better!

Defensemen: On the back end, there are several vets handling defensive duties, headlined by Johnny Shuffleboard, Ryosuke Sato, and Slimey Snail. The recent signing of S58 draft-eligible prospect Luc Blouin has injected some youth into the d-corps. Let’s look at a couple of the top TOI d-men below.
S55 – RD – Johnny Shuffleboard – 522 TPE: Johnny has been a beast for the Whalers thus far, eating up 21:32TOI and contributing 22 points, good for 10th on the team. You’ll see him regularly patrolling the blue line on the power-play (8PPP, 3:04PPTOI). He might not hit you very often, but his combination of speed, acceleration, and puck handling will leave you scrambling if you’re not diligent.
S54 – LD – Slimey Snail – 576 TPE: Slimey makes up for Johnny’s non-physical nature in spades. His 145 hits lead the team and rank 2nd league wide. Add in 17 points and 2:04 minutes on the penalty kill, while averaging 20:14TOI, and you’ve got yourself a scary defenseman on both sides of the ice!

Forwards: When discussing the firepower that the Whalers possess up front, you need to mention several names. Rotticus Scott, Jason Desrouleaux, Bryce McMahon, among others have made significant contributions this season. However, Daniil Nikiforov has been in a league of his own.
S55 – C – Daniil Nikiforov – 623 TPE: Daniil is having himself an outstanding season offensively, leading the Whalers in both goals, 23, and assists, 30, for a grand total of 53P. “Long” John Donair from the Anaheim Outlaws has 50P in 3 less games, but Daniil is atop the league in points for now. He also contributes physically with .51 hits and .47 shots blocked per game. And this is while playing only the 6th most ice time in terms of forwards on the team!

Overall, the Vancouver Whalers have been collecting wins thanks to the strong efforts of their experienced team (only 1 S57 rookie!). Their defensemen have done their job well done, also jumping up on the rush going the other way. Combine Daniil Nikiforov’s offensive streak and Jon St. Ark’s other-worldly goaltending, and you’ve got a strong chance of winning any day!
Congratulations to the Whalers on all their success this season but keep an eye out for the Knights. We’ll take the West by storm before you know it!
