While the Kelowna Knights are in the midst of a re-build, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at the Knights’ history. They’ve won the Four Star Cup 11 times, first winning in Season 2 and most recently in Season 42. In each of those seasons (season-by-season results weren’t available for Seasons 2 and 3), they’ve finished the regular season with an average of 29 wins, 15.8 regulation time losses, and 3.9 OT/shootout losses. Of course, the number of games played per season has changed in SMJHL history, which translates into the Knights having gotten 62% of available regular season points during their winning seasons. Interestingly, they finished last in Season 11, having amassed a 10-27-3 record, but went on an amazing run to win their third championship!

Now, let’s take a quick look at the past few seasons and analyze what sort of trajectory the Knights are on currently! Of course, a team’s success is contingent on how other teams are stacking up each season, but we’ll focus on some basics. We’ll focus on the regular season since we’re at the end of S56.

S53: The Knights did quite well this season, finishing with a 31-16-3 (65P – 0.65 win%) record, good enough for the top West seed and 2nd league-wide. They scored at a pace of 2.72 goals and had 2.5 goals against per game. Their top scorer LW Jaska Seppala had 23G and 39P while C Rocco Berni led the team with 25A. 6 players finished with more than 25P (0.5PPG). 8 players recorded a 60+OGR while 12 players had a 60+DGR. Cillian Kavanagh and Brayden Ennis combined for an average of 63.5GR in net.

S54: For S54, the Knights continued their dominance of the West, again finishing at the top with a 32-11-7 record (71P – 0.71win% tied for 1st in the league). Their offensive and defensive capabilities continued to develop, evident in their higher GF (3.3) and lower GA (1.98) per game. Once again, Jaska Seppala lead his team with 27G and 49P, and there were 7 players with 25+P. Again, 8 players finished with a 60+OGR and only 9 players had a DGR over 60. This time, Peter Ramsey backed up Cillian between the pipes and together, they combined for a 71.5GR, an improvement from last season, seemingly mitigating the drop in DGR.

S55: The Knights begin to regress a little bit, dropping to 2nd in the West and 4th in the league with a 33-13-4 (70P – 0.7 win%). Their offensive production stayed consistent at 3.3GF per game, but their GA per game rose to 2.64. C Daniel Laforest finished 2P ahead of Jaska, finishing with the team lead in assists (27) and points (41). 9 players had 25+P. 11 players finished with 60+OGR while the same number finished with 60+DGR as well. There were some goaltending woes however, as the trio of Peter Ramsey, Damien Vertigo, and Brayden Ennis all iced around 2.5+GAA and below .900SV%, averaging 62.3GR.

S56: This season, the Knights’ rebuild is in full swing, compiling a 17-29-4 (38P – 0.380 win%) thus far. Their offensive production has dropped to 2.15GF per game while they’re letting in slightly more goals at 3.08GA per game. C Patrik Money and rookie C Cian McFelter hold the team lead with 25P apiece, the only Knights currently at a .5PPG pace. 3 players sit exactly at 60OGR while 8 players have a 60+DGR. Peter Ramsey has continued to improve in net along with Damien Vertigo as they both possess .900+SV% and an average of 68GR.

The future is bright though, as the Knights have 6 S57 rookies currently on their roster, each of them continuing to improve regularly. It’s only a matter of time before the Knights are in their rightful place, atop the West and fighting for the Four Star Cup again!
