Hello SHL,

It was brought to SMJHL HOs attention that the Newfoundland Berserkers went over cap By 1M on Oct 12th. Link here
The team signed Bjorkman and dropped Hanson who was considered active by definition at the time. Since that player was active, NL assumes the contract obligations for that player.

On Oct 18th, they went over an additional 2M. Link here
The team picked up a free agent Peralta and dropped Bjorkman who was considered active by definition at the time. Since that player was active, NL assumes the contract obligations for that player.

We are aware that SHL has a precedent set of double the overage as a cap hit on the following season. On the juniors level, we feel that could cripple a team at the expense of newer members and we look to avoid that.
Our precedent will be as follows:

Newfoundland will receive a cap hit on S57 of 1.5M (A hit of half of the total overage on next seasons cap)
The GMs will both receive a fine of half their gm salary.
Newfoundland must get back under cap immediately. Which they have already arranged to do.

Additionally HO would like this time to address a couple rule changes regarding this.
First to help clarify dropping actives:

ii. If one team releases a player and another team signs them, the new team assumes that player’s salary obligations.
iii. If a team releases an active player who goes unsigned the remainder of the season, the releasing team assumes that player’s salary obligations. That player may not return to the club the following season.

New-

Secondly, in an effort to help inactive turnaround we are modifying an additional rule.
