Rookie Analysis: Brian Davenport C, RW - Quebec City Citadelles
Hometown: Eastbourne, United Kingdom
International Team: Great Britain
Drafted: 28th Overall, S57 SMJHL Entry Draft

S57 SMJHL Stats: G: 2 A: 9 P: 11 +/- +6
S57 SMJHL Projected Stats: G: 5 A: 10 P:15 +/- +5

Player Potential: Patrick Kane
Player Probable: Gabriel Landeskog

Offense: Davenport has performed as expected as his development into an SHL caliber player has begun to take shape. The downside, if there is one is that Davenport is playing on a stacked Quebec City team which gives less of a chance to explore his capability as a winger as Quebec has played Davenport primarily as a 4th line center. Before the draft, scouts indicated that Davenport, should his luck and the right team come along should see a career similar to that of Patrick Kane. However, several teams have inquired about Davenport's ability to remain a center in his SHL career and should that track continue, Davenport would morph from a pure goal scorer to a gifted all around player. In four seconds of PP time, Davenport boasts 1 point. In eight minutes of average ice time a night, Davenport has 2 goals and 9 assists, good enough for 11 points in 56 games with a plus/minus of plus 6.

Defense: This is where Quebec City has focusing their training of Davenport, who came to Quebec City offensively gifted but weaker defensively. Since joining Quebec, Davenport has performed better but still boasts a poor defensive game rating of 51. His 11 hits are one of the lowest numbers on the team but its an as expected for an offensive player. Still, there are signs of hope. Davenport looks to be a brave player, his 18 shots blocked are among the middle of the pack for primarily offensive players and his 16 PIM's are also among the highest for the offensive players. Which indicates he is willing to go to the mat for his teammates and get into the tough areas of the ice to make a play. There is tremendous upside for Davenport defensively, whether or not it takes is up to the player.

Intangibles: Davenport benefits from the sole reason of not being a goaltender and the retirement of gifted mid 40s forwards. Teams that could look to add a Center/RW like Davenport are teams like Hamilton, Manhattan, Toronto and San Francisco. Teams that are expected to lose quality players in the next two or three seasons which would give Davenport more time to develop an all-around game rather than focus on one area of his game. The upside is there, Davenport boasts a 53.7 CF and a 100.6 PDO. If anything over 55% CF is 'elite', than Davenport is overachieving as a 4th liner despite the early downside defensively. It will all come down to development and Quebec City's current role as a top team in Junior Hockey means they are getting development right. While it may be difficult for Davenport to eventually hit top minutes on the first line, he should settle into a steady second line role as early as next season baring call-ups.

Draft Potential: Davenport went 28th overall in the S57 SMJHL draft. If he shows continued signs and flashes of potential that we've seen already and he perform well in the playoffs, look for Davenport to go as early as mid second round. Otherwise, regardless of situation he will not fall past the fourth round.
