[x2 Holidays Media] - Reflection on S57 with Valtterri Kauppinen

Well, we're nearing the end of the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League's fifty seventh season already, with most teams having about eight games left to play. Crazy how time flies, isn't it? Well, this season, a number of players saw an explosion in their production as compared to their previous seasons. One of these previously stated players who saw an incredible amount of point production this season is located in the city of Vancouver. As you probably could have guessed, it's everybody's (probably not) favorite Whaler, Valtterri Kauppinen!

Over the last season, Kauppinen put up 26 goals and 29 assists for 55 total points, which is especially staggering when you realize that he scored that many while playing alongside a struggling Vancouver Whalers team. Of course, this could be attributed to the fact that Kauppinen played with the same players, in KnockedOut ByOvechkin and Rikki Petrov, on the same line (including being on the same team while on the power play) for a majority of this season's games, and was thus able to build off of his chemistry with the two. It's entirely possible that this chemistry has an effect on the point production of the top line, as the trio has been playing on the same line for a large chunk of their careers on the Vancouver Whalers in the SMJHL. However, even linemates with the highest of chemistry can be fickle at times. Let's get back to Valtterri Kauppinen's production on its own, though. Compared to last season, where Kauppinen scored a total of 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points, there was an increase of about 103.7% in his production, where he went from that measly 27 points to 55 points, as stated before. With his 26 goals, Kauppinen has so far scored around 15.9% of the Whalers' total goals for this season.

According to this graph, Kauppinen has a decent lead in the race for the most amount of goals scored on the Vancouver Whalers right now. The top four goal scorers on the team go as follows: Kauppinen, of course, with 26 goals, his linemate KnockedOut ByOvechkin with 18 goals, defender Johnny Shuffleboard with 13, and Austin Smith, just like Shuffleboard with another 13. As of January 3rd, 2021, Valtterri Kauppinen has a comfy lead of 8 goals to top out KnockedOut ByOvechkin's 18 goals. Of course, this could all end if Kauppinen continues as he is now - in the past five or so games, Kauppinen has scored just one goal and one assist. This is the winger's largest point slump since the Whalers had an early to middle season slump as a whole, where they won almost zero games. This can likely be attributed to his exhaustion, or perhaps just a lack of luck, as his shooting percentage has gone down by 2.4%, a decrease from about 17.5% to 15.1%. I don't have any doubts that soon enough, with enough luck and training, he can attempt to break this funk and pound in a ton of goals and assists right before the end of the season. If he's lucky enough, he might even be able to edge out the current league leader in points, Zdenko Beranek with exactly 30 goals and 30 assists for 60 points in 58 games. Kauppinen may perhaps even be able to take home a trophy for himself, most likely to be the most valuable player award due to his service with the Vancouver Whalers. Though, once again, he must be extremely lucky in that the Quebec City Citadelles either have a late season slump themselves or that he turns into an Ovechkin-like scoring machine.
