(GRADED) Deep Dive #1 - St. Louis Scarecrows S57
#1
(This post was last modified: 01-08-2021, 03:01 PM by leafs1997.)

This deep dive will discuss the following topics:
~ Overall Regular Season Performance
~ Rookie Performance (Skaters)
~ Goalie Performance
~ Playoff Expectations

Scarecrows REGULAR SEASON PERFORMANCE Scarecrows
St. Louis came into this season of the SMJHL after giving the Maine Timber a run for their money in the first round of the S56 SMJHL playoffs. With a refreshing offseason, they had their heads held high for the upcoming season but they knew far too well that they would be re-building during the pre-season and regular season. After the draft concluded, the season was afoot. With a rather successful preseason, the Scarecrows were very excited heading into S57. It is not a surprise to say that St. Louis has had a rough year this season. With the first season to have 66 games in the regular season, they managed to put up 25 wins and ended up with 55 points to end off the regular season. Additional statistics included 163 goals for, 206 goals against, and a win percentage of 0.417. They ended up finishing fifth in the Eastern conference - beating out Newfoundland by 6 points - and 11th overall in the league - a spot below their S56 placement heading into the playoffs. Although it was a struggle at times, it's officially come to an end.

Scarecrows ROOKIE PERFORMANCE Scarecrows
St. Louis picked up a lot of rookies this season which will more or less set them up with a promising future. The rookies that have been drafted in the entry draft and played out all 66 games include 1st overall pick, Jean-Locke Zidane, 15th overall pick, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, 27th overall pick, Hunter Sharpe, 39th overall pick, Greg Davies, and 51st overall pick, Nick Grant.
Jean-Locke Zidane
During this season, Zidane has managed to live up to his expectation as he was indeed the first overall pick in the entry draft. He's put up 5 goals and 24 assists for a total of 29 points for his rookie season (more than any other rookie on the team). He leads his team in short-handed goals (1), hits (178), average time on ice (22:12), and average powerplay time on ice (3:55). He has been a very impactful defenseman and certainly one of the biggest team players in St. Louis.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser
With St. Louis picking him 2nd in the draft, he certainly has not let them down with his performance. He's put up 6 goals and 11 assists for a total of 17 points for his rookie season. He leads his team in short-handed assists (1). Hundertwasser has had a very respectable season with his contributions and he's certainly in for a wonder of a career.
Hunter Sharpe
Sharpe got picked up by St. Louis in the 3rd round of the entry draft and he set ambitious goals for himself for his rookie career. He's contributed 5 goals and 6 assists for a total of 11 points this season. He's certainly been one to put his body on the line as he has the most shots blocked of all the rookies this season (68). Although he fell short of reaching his desired 20 point finish, the playoffs give him a glimpse of hope to achieve it.
Greg Davies
Greg "Taskmaker" Davies has had an impressive season thus far for the crows. He's got 5 goals and 9 assists for a total of 14 points on the table for his team. He's a very well-rounded player and he's certainly had a positive impact on his team this year. Of the rookies that have played all 66 regular season games, he has the best plus-minus of all of them. It's very exciting to see his upcoming career.
Nick Grant
As the final rookie to participate in all regular season games, Grant has had a great year thus far. He's put up 8 goals and 9 assists for a total of 17 points. He leads the rookies in goals this season with 8 and has quite a promising career ahead of him. With a late draft spot, it's safe to say that Grant was a pleasant surprise with his performance thus far in the season.

Scarecrows GOALIE PERFORMANCE Scarecrows
St. Louis has had 3 goaltenders throughout the duration of this season. The crows have Nicolae Antonescu, a goaltender that's been with St. Louis since Season 54 and has the second highest TPE on the team, Kit Kirkstone, a rookie goalie that was picked up in the second round of the entry draft, and Bean Gamble, an emergency backup goalie that has not seen the net this season.
Nicolae Antonescu
Antonescu has had an average season thus far. He has managed to win the most games this season than any other seasons he's played for the Scarecrows with 19 wins on the year. Of course, he's also played a career high of 52 games this season as well, somewhat discrediting this achievement. He's had a total of 1488 saves on 1653 shots against, and finishes the regular season with a goals against average of 3.13. He's picked up 3 shutouts this year and a 0.900 save percentage. It's been a long season for Antonescu and he's certainly going to be quite the prize to any SHL team that may pick him up within the coming years. In terms of the playoffs, it's understandable that he will most likely get the start as he did last year and as he's done for all of the seasons he's spent with St. Louis.
Kit Kirkstone
It's certainly been a wonder to see Kirkstone play this year. It's always exciting to see how a rookie goalie will perform in the crease and he began the season with a great pre-season. Their coach threw him in for 2 games to see how he'd perform and he won both. Of course, as a rookie goaltender, it was evident that he would not become the starting goaltender from these 2 performances, and that he'd have to take a backseat for the majority of his first season. Kirkstone still got to play 845 minutes in the paint this season and came out with 6 wins out of his 14 starts. He finished with a 2.63 goals against average and a save percentage of 0.918 - both of these topping the starting goaltender. There is a strong probability that Kirkstone won't see any playoff minutes this season, however, crazier things have happened. The kid has had a respectable start to his career and he'll certainly be a player to look out for.
Bean Gamble
There isn't a whole lot to speak about Gamble's career thus far because it is pretty much non-existent. As an emergency backup goalie with 155 TPE and numerous training hours missed, he most certainly is a last resort. I wouldn't expect to see Gamble in the crease before pigs learn to fly.

Scarecrows PLAYOFF EXPECTATIONS Scarecrows
St. Louis will be facing the Kelowna Knights in the first round of the SMJHL playoffs. It would not be a shock to see them go out in the very first round - as they've done for the past 3 seasons. With a burst of motivation near the end of the regular season, it's going to be crucial for St. Louis to carry that motivation into the first round if they're looking to have a chance. It's likely that Nicolae Antonescu will be the starting goaltender for St. Louis and will likely be a key contributor to their playoff chances as he's currently the highest ranked Goaltender in the SMJHL in terms of TPE. They are coming into the playoffs with a disadvantage. They did not have a great year, as they've focused more on rebuilding, however, this does not mean that they aren't going to give it their all. Will we see a major upset this season? Only time will tell.
