(GRADED) Narboza Manyhands- A look at the SMJHL's first alien

Narboza Manyhands’ rookie year left much to be desired.  His struggles weren’t entirely his fault, though, as his team spent the year at the bottom of the standings for the East. His stats probably would have looked better if he played in the West, considering that Vancouver’s 66 points and .500 win percentage that had them in last in the East would have had them in fourth in the West. Still, it is worthwhile to take a look at the Defenseman from the planet Shardang of the Crab Nebula. Before we take a look at this player, though, we should take a look at his origins and how he ended up in the SMJHL.

The Alien is 6ft 3in and he weighs in at 211 lbs. He crashed to Earth in Interlaken, Switzerland where he discovered that his many hands gave him a distinct advantage in Hockey. With at least a dozen hands, he uses his left six hands to play. His talents and unique anatomy caught the attention of scouts, which led to his entry to the S57 SMJHL Draft. The Vancouver Whalers decided to pick up the young man with their 3rd pick in the draft and the 36th overall, so Narboza became a Whaler.

Now we can take a look at Narboza’s first season in the J. There is no way around it, he did not have a great season, but he has a lot of potential and will certainly not just fade away after one less than perfect season. Narboza’s most eye popping stat is his +/-: He finished the regular season at -41. There was only one player with a lower +/- this season. +/- is not always a very useful stat, though, as it can be impacted by events that are beyond a player’s control. His season also had some bright spots, though. He has 61 shots on goal this season, and although he only scored three of them, it is a promising sign for the rookie that he is able to put pucks on net. If he works on accuracy during the offseason, he could become a scoring machine later on. He also had 34 takeaways to his 27 giveaways. The takeaways could become an issue for a defensemen, but if he gets better at holding on to the puck, his upside will increase greatly. Points scored is also an important category to look at. He got one shorthanded assist during the season, with eight total assists. That shorthanded assist represents the flashes of talent we saw during his first season, and if he continues to be strong while on the power play, he could become a very useful special teams player.

It is also important to consider external factors when judging players. Vancouver’s struggles were largely due to playing in a very strong division. The other two teams in his division, the Anchorage Armada and the Kelowna Knights, took first and second in the West, respectively. Every team in the West had a winning record, except for Vancouver which broke even in wins/losses. Also, although Vancouver struggled to keep the puck out of their net, that cannot be blamed on a rookie defensemen, and Vancouver also had a hard time scoring goals as well. That issue is by no means the fault of a defenseman. Vancouver has many issues to fix, but Manyhands can take advantage of this. With a strong off season and a lot of hard work, he can help fix his team’s issues. If he can keep the puck going the right way next season, Vancouver will be a force to be reckoned with.

Approved, +5 TPE @cahtah haht

On Shardang my family would likely have been sent to the reprocessing centers for my performance this season. Very unfortunate.
