Miguel Hefeweizen’s story begins many years ago, on a warm summer’s evening in Vienna, Austria. Miguel’s mother, Maria, had grown up in Guadalajara, Mexico, into a wealthy banking family. Maria had attended and recently graduated from college at the University of Southern California. To celebrate her newfound degree, she embarked on a backpacking trip across Europe, not knowing how much it would change her life. On that fateful night in Vienna, she met Jacob Hefeweizen, a local boy who had just begun a job as an airline pilot. Jacob had grown up in a blue-collar family in Vienna, where his father was a foreman at a brick factory. Jacob and Maria met at a local concert, and it was, as they say, love at first sight. Nearly inseparable after they met, they were married less than a month later, much to the consternation of both of their families. Determined to make this work, Maria moved to Vienna and opened an authentic Mexican restaurant, while Jacob continued his career at the airline. Miguel was born just a few years later, and named after his maternal grandfather. Jacob was an avid hockey fan, and Maria grew to love the game as well, so Miguel grew up in a hockey household and often attended games with his parents. As he grew older, Miguel quickly took to the game himself, and he proved himself a gifted hockey player. Miguel played competitive hockey during high school, and worked at the family restaurant when he wasn’t at practice or games. Miguel was a natural center and team leader. After graduating high school Miguel was accepted to, and attended, the University of Vienna. While he was an adequate student, however, his first love remained hockey, and he played club hockey throughout his college career for the Vienna University Totonka, where he excelled and caught the attention of league scouts. Upon completing college, after contemplating taking over his mother’s restaurant, Miguel realized that he would never be truly happy if he didn’t at least take a change. Armed with this certainty Miguel immediately declared for the SMJHL draft. While this might be the first time the world has heard the name Miguel Hefeweizen, it won’t be the last.
