Pretty sure you can hit 1500tpe without ever posting media right now? Rookie tasks, contracts, and Twitter is pretty good rn. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but that seems fine if I'm remembering correctly.

Ok,. so stop paying for media?

What? That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying media isn't required on an individual level to have a player in the league.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Nictox cranked out his album reviews post in character and in the media forum, he'd get points

I just checked the numbers I ran a few seasons back, before improved Twitter and expansion.

16 seasons, with a peak in the 1500s, before you stop being a 1300 TPE player. 7 seasons above that mark.

again, pretty bare minimum in terms of success i this league. Like, if someone is bad at writing or creating media in general, we are basically saying "1500 is where you belong, and you should be happy because its good enough". But it's not good enough for everyone. If one is fine with 1500 peak, cool. If they are not, then the problem still exists: there is a barrier for media and maybe we should revisit the goal of what media is supposed to be. It's not for us the decide what is good enough for any individual.

What the money does for your player seems secondary for me.  If there's content that grows or engages the community in a positive way you should be able to get site money for it.

This is something I deal with often in ISFL and PBE (Long time media head in both). There's always a fine line for things like this, as we see. I'll have you know one thing in my experience though over the years: The *second* you give people some questionable "wiggle" room with media, they take it and it becomes a huge thing.

My suggestion for the SHL however, (besides the fact that an hour podcast should give $4,000,000 @Zoone16 ) is that we should have the "Community Media" section, but *NOT* pay out word count for it. The pay for those articles should be strictly bonuses given from community interactions and discussions raised because of them.

Any grader can see if "Player X" from "Team Y" posted some nonsense and his teammates inflated the "interaction", but something like Nic's articles in this case would warrant some sort of monetary fee, at the grader's discretion.

Shitposting doesn't get paid, "non-SHL Universe" articles don't get word count paid out, (thus preventing, say, a college thesis on COVID from making any money Smile ),but engaging the community on a topic gives you a reasonable payout.

Feels like the Happy Medium here.

@JKortesi81 I disagree with that. It opens up many cans of worms whereupon someone posts a meme thread and gets their buddies to respond, hence artificially driving player engagement/interaction on the piece (this is but an example thought of on the spot). There are plenty of facets that can be explored whilst remaining on topic of the SHL. Whether it be in-character, game analysis, power rankings, trade analysis, etc... The SHL Media is at the title of the subforum says... SHL Media.

Also for people criticizing @Nictox 's album articles. They were moved into the graded section after some time but they are not receiving any monetary payout. I communicated this to Nictox way early on in his series about that.

If you want to write about stuff that is not SHL related, there are plenty of creative writing sites out there for that.

It ... kind of is, though? Whether it's media, graphics, jobs, whatever, there has to be *something* to separate the 1500 players from the 2k players. Otherwise, we're all 2k players and at that point we might as well go back to STHS and all play with 40 passing and 99 scoring again.

WITH THAT SAID.

I do think we need to have something for not-media like the album reviews. I also think, scrolling through the subforum, more than a couple of the "invalid media" could have easily been course-corrected with a PM to the OP and a relocation to, like, podcast questions. Especially since a couple of them are clearly saying "I'M STARTING A PODCAST GUYS." Like I get it, you can't grade the questions thread ... but we have a place for questions threads. Think with your dipstick, Jimmy.

I think contrast in the league is good. Someone will be 1500, someone will be 2000. We can anticipate those things. What I'm saying is that if someone wants to be good and wants to put in the effort, we have basically 3 avenues of consistent money making: Writing, graphics, and Podcasts. To say those are the 3 archetypes of every person on the site is obviously untrue. There are way more types of people and what I'm saying is that we should open those avenues (and create new ones) up to people who put the effort in, while also re-evaluating what it means to foster league interaction, as cal had mentioned.

And yes, you can get a job for a few million, you can win fantasy and you can obviously gamble. These, i think, are even narrower paths to consistency. Contracts too provide a hefty sum if you can negotiate it with your team (good luck if they're up against the cap) and if you're in a new TPE bracket, you've already made enough money to be there and therefore don't benefit from the extra money that much.

The other hand is that many people in this league have too much money. If there was a way, besides graphics, to spread some of the extra money around by way of bounty or at-request media, that would be swell. But in this matter, ive done little thinking.

Is loosening media requirements really opening up new avenues, though? Using the album thing for example ... you still have to take the time to listen to, and write about, the albums mentioned. Congrats. We're still rewarding writers, with the added degree of "They have to know a little something about music, too."

Not to mention, opening up column A (more ways to make more money) is only going to increase column B (more people with, in your eyes at least, too much money). So I dunno how that's gonna work out for you, frankly. Seems counterintuitive.

I'm all for more community interaction. Not every community interaction merits a reward to your player, though. Sitting in the comments of the Twitch stream during a sim shouldn't bag me money, but it absolutely adds to the community aspect of the league.
