(Graded) Deep Dive #2: A Brief Maine Timber History

(This post was last modified: 03-13-2021, 01:25 AM by StamkosFan.)

An old player I had, Reginald MacIntyre, was first drafted to a club that now bears a different name - the Maine Timber. Here's a brief rundown on how they wound up in Maine in the first place.

The Timber began life in Season 25 as the Halifax Raiders under manager vbottas17, with their home at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. They were actually a decent J expansion side at the time, advancing to the 2nd round of the postseason in their first season of competition, then winning the Four Star Cup in Season 26. Co-Manager Baelor Swift moved on to bigger and better things, and took on Toast as Co-GM. The Raiders were bounced three straight times in round one before Toast cycled out for fever95. Under vbottas and fever, the club captured its second Four Star Cup in Season 30 before the decline began. They would advance in the postseason three straight times out of round one. NYRangersFan3061 took over in Season 33, and it would be a rebuilding project after. In Season 34, the Raiders endured their worst season to-date, 14-32-4, and missed the postseason for the first time. It was the first time they had even been below 20 wins at season's end.

They would make a deep run in Season 36 after another missed postseason in Season 35. NYRangersFan's final season at the helm was their best regular season under his leadership before FourFour took the reins for three seasons. My player, Reginald MacIntyre, was drafted in the final year of his GM stint. They were ousted in round one. It was the only time in a stretch from Season 38 to Season 44 where they would qualify - at the time, approximately one real-world year. They would then go on to TheDangaZone in Season 41, and it wouldn't be until King (later Jearim) took control and steered the Raiders back into postseason waters. Flareon4043 took them on four postseason adventures in their time before the current manager, Citizen of Adraa, was selected to be the new GM. Feeling the need to change the branding, he rechristened them the Timber and them into the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine.

They needed some time to adjust to their new friendly confines. Two seasons. They would not make the postseason in their first two years of existence before the new playoff format was adopted, and they advanced all the way to the Four Star Cup Finals in Season 55. They were more quickly ousted the next season, in round two, and booted in round one in Season 57. Nearing the end of this season, they sit at the bottom of the East Division, 12 points adrift of the St. Louis Scarecrows, with not much hope for postseason noise.

In their time as the Raiders, they captured the franchise's only two Four Star Cups early on, have come close on a couple of occasions, but have yet to recapture the glory of old, spending it all so soon. They have the framework in place to make it back someday, though they will have to have some patience, as the SMJHL's wheel of fortune turns quickly and may not set you on improved standing when it stops.
