#1
(This post was last modified: 03-13-2021, 01:01 PM by CptSquall.)

A look into the performance of the S58 Vancouver Whalers' rookie class on and off the ice.

Forwards

Right Winger - Alexis Saint-Michel - 9th Overall
TPE: 290

Despite the Whalers struggling overall on the season, Saint-Michel's performance in his rookie season is something that will give them great hope for the future. Leading all rookies in points, Saint-Michel has put up a remarkable 18 goals and 19 assists in 16 minutes per game and is tied for second in scoring on the Whalers.  He is also tied for second in plus/minus on the team with +9 on the season.  Saint-Michel will no doubt have turned some heads with his play and will be near the top of plenty draft boards in the offseason.

Right Wing - Robot Sunfish - 45th Overall
TPE: 255

Robot Sunfish is a no nonsense winger who focuses on getting in the face of his opponents and playing very physical hockey.  He has the most PIMs on the team with 40 and has participated in 6 fights, winning half of them.  His contributions haven't been only physical though as he has managed to pick up 21 points on the season so far in his 13:47 of ice time per game.  Robot Sunfish has shown remarkable development for a player drafted as late as he was and it will be intriguing to see where he goes in the draft.

Right Wing - Strawberry Sailfish - 52nd Overall
TPE: 175

It's been a rough year for Strawberry Sailfish as he sits bottom in points among all Whalers that have played every game this season, notching only 4 so far. He is also a team low -29 on the year and has a dismal 2.04% shooting percentage. With little progression in his abilities this year, it's looking like Sailfish won't be making much of an impact in the league.

Center - Makrus "The Tater" Jager - Free Agent
TPE: 216

Markus Jager joined the team late in the season and has played only 26 games so far. As is the norm for late starts, Jager has struggled, scoring only 3 points and is yet to score a goal in the SMJHL. Jager is an active presence though and is starting to develop his skills so it is likely he will be a much better player next season and could be a diamond in the rough late on in the draft for an SHL team.

Center - Mario Abeebehboosedibadibo - Free Agent
TPE: 179

Mario Abeebehboosedibadibo was a late signing to the team following the draft and has struggled to make an impact.  Playing all 60 games, Mario has only 5 points on the season, so currently has fewer points than syllables in his surname.  He is also a -27 rating on the year and has made little positive contributions to Vancouver.  His shooting percentage is 6.90% though, which is nice. Not likely to be on the radar of many SHL teams.

Defense

Left Defense - Sven Svechnikov - 30th Overall
TPE: 263

Sven Svechnikov is another of the Whalers' promising players and looks to be a future top pairing defenseman for Vancouver. The Swede is a solid all round performer and has contributed 19 points, 71 hits, 10 blocked shots and a +7 rating on the season. Svechnikov is likely to be the second Whaler off the board after Saint-Michel in the upcoming draft and the future certainly looks bright for him.

Right Defense - Dara McQuick - Free Agent
TPE: 216

Dara McQuick is the last of the Whalers' free agent signings, and he has performed the best offensively out of them all.  With 1 goal and 13 assists from the blueline, McQuick has shown some good potential so far this season. Defensively, he has recorded 52 hits, 13 takeaways and 11 blocked shots. He's still putting the work in to improve and will no doubt be in a better position for a bigger contribution next season.
