Jay Sink, a defenceman, was selected with the twelfth pick of the first round of the season fifty-eight SMJHL draft by the Anchorage Armada. Stepping into a role for the incumbent world champions would place a lot of pressure on a new rookie and throughout this deep dive, I will evaluate how Jay Sink has performed in his role.
The Numbers
Through Sixty-six games, Jay Sink:
The Analysis
What should be understood here is that Jay Sink led the Armada’s defencemen in scoring. His seven goals put him two up from the next leading defenceman. Very impressive for a rookie on a championship team. In addition, Sink led the team in the plus/minus category with his plus of twenty-one. The next highest were fifteen and nine. In this regard, it can be seen that Sink’s contributions to his team were incredibly important for when he came onto the rink. Sink was very much a role player, playing in such a good team, but it cannot be argued that he did not contribute valuably to a team that is looking to repeat as world champions. Now however we must move onto some of Sink’s weaknesses during his rookie season; and when looking at the lowlights there, most of them do happen to be from rookie mistakes and growing pains. The thirty-five takeaways hurt a bit less with the twenty-three takeaways but that is still quite a high number for a second or third line player. It does not come close to the team’s lead of sixty-one, but it will still be an aspect of his game that he will be looking to improve greatly next season. Finally, Sink's point output of eighteen shows us that he struggled to contribute to an impactful degree. This might be expected of a new player and a role player, but without a shadow of a doubt, I am sure that Sink will want to at least clear twenty points next season. The Future
With how he has been progressing over this season, I believe that Jay Sink is primed to go as early as the middle of the first round in the SHL Entry draft. I do not see him falling past the second round. Yet a character analysis of Jay Sink would not be complete without mentioning his immaturity. By all accounts, Sink has been partying hard during both the regular season and the postseason. This might lead to some GM's being a bit cautious about his "Manziel-esque" tendencies. Yet if he keeps progressing as he has this season, he will remain an attractive prospect in the eyes of most GM's. Code: 529 Words Approved, +5 TPE @Blasoon
