Contenders by average TPE
#1

Is your team getting the best bang for it's TPE? Let's find out.

Hamilton  ranks first in TPE amongst forwards with an average of 1650 TPE, and second by defenceman with an average TPE of 1582. Their goaltender isn't nearly as strong, but it hasn't held them back. They're third in goals allowed with 118, and their strong defence core is keeping the other team away from the danger areas. The fact that their forwards are so strong also leads to lots of possession, and the best way to protect a goalie is to have the puck 200 feet away. In short, no surprise they're in first, though it's interesting they're doing so with a goalie on the lower end of the TPE scale compared to other teams.

Chicago is second in the league by points %, though they rank 4th by average TPE. They have the top rated defence group by average TPE, and the third best forward group. At 1083 average TPE, their goalies rank 15th in the league. Chicago ranks second in goals allowed, so similar to Hamilton they've created a system where there goalies can thrive.

Buffalo is more well rounded than the teams we've discussed so far. Their goalies have an average TPE that ranks 6th in the league, while they have the second best forward group and the third best defence. They're essentially tied with Chicago by points %, so they're playing to their potential as the second best team by TPE. They have the second best offence in the league with 223 goals for, but interestingly enough rank 5th in goals allowed with 133. Is there room for positive regression here, or is there a reason why Buffalo is allowing more goals than similar talented teams despite having a better goaltending tandem?

Toronto is another well rounded team. They boast the top goalie duo by TPE in the league, the fourth best offence and the fifth best defence. They're fourth in the league with a 740 points percentage, and fourth in goals allowed. While this is an obvious strength, the question to me is why they're not leading the league in goals allowed. You would think with the best goalie tandem they'd be higher. Though, of course, no disrespect is intended, as they are in the upper half of the league in goal prevention.

Texas is exactly where you'd expect them. They're in 5th place, have the fifth best offence, and the fourth best D core and goalie tandem. They're fourth in goals scored, and fifth in goals allowed. They have a shot at being even better than this though, as their goal differential of 89 is second in the league.

Calgary is where things get interesting. They have the 7th best offence, the 9th best defence, and the 10th best goalie tandem. You'd expect them to be further down the standings than 6th place, though. Their goal differential of +36 suggests it's not a fluke, as Calgary has the 6th best goals for (173) and 6th best goals against (134). This is either a team that is very lucky, or is maximizing the strengths of their players. I'm leaning towards option B, so kudos to management and their coaches here.

Edmonton is another team that looks to be well-managed, as they boast the 6th best forward group, the 14th best defensive group, and 11th best goaltending group. The average TPE is 9th, yet they're in 7th place! They have a middle of the pack offence with 159 goals for, and a middle of the pack goals allowed of 137. Still, it's a positive goal differential, so management has players in the optimal places.

Los Angeles is in 8th place, but their average TPE is in 6th. Perhaps because their biggest strength is a goalie at 5th in average TPE, while the forward group is 9th and defence is 8th. Perhaps a goalie can't carry a team in the SHL? LA is 9th in the league in goals allowed with 158, and right now sport a +2 goal differential.

So what have we learned?

It seems like, so far, a team with a strong forward and defence core looks to have the most success this season. A strong goalie can help, but the goalie cannot drag their team to regular season success. However, all bets are off in the playoffs - a 930+ save percentage could carry a team through a short series. And maybe that's all a team really needs.

How a team succeeds in the regular season is far different than in the playoffs. Nobody will remember the teams that did well in the regular season 10 years from now. So let's check back in at playoff time and see what teams had the most success.

You could argue that Texas has a better goalie tandem than we have but... well, Monty is doing his very best! With all of his 173 TPE!
