S59 SMJHL PT #6 - Playoff dreams
#31

After almost failing to get the bye due to some sim things, the Detroit Falcons ended the season with a 41-20-5, not too bad. WE finished 4th in the league, and as of writing this are going against the Quebec City Citadelles in the first round, whatever those are supposed to be. In order to be ready for this, the team has used their bye to correct what went wrong to cause the fall from the 2nd seed to the 4th so quickly and that starts with scoring more goals. Even though we had the top goal scorer the last time I checked the index, with Kermit Murphy, there just wasn't enough help down the stretch, which caused some bad losses at the end of the season. IF we work on this, I believe that we can make a deep playoff run and take down what seems like the obvious favorite in the Kelowna Knights, is Kelowna even a real place? I guess I will find out when we meet in the finals.

The Anchorage Armada had secured second in the SMJHL, but were still looking to improve and find a way to come back with the Four Star Cup for this season. Between the regular season and the playoffs starting, Mikhail Novikov used his time effectively and skated every day, working on ways where he could have more of an impact in the line up of the Armada.

They say that depth scoring wins playoff games, and eventually playoff serieses, and Novikov wants to be effective depth to help with a Championship in Anchorage. But Novikov hasn't been the only one on the ice, as he has been joined by the majority of his teammates, minus the ones that are dealing with nagging injury issues, trying to rest up and recover as much as they can before the playoffs start.

The Armada are in a good position. It's no denial that the Knights are the hands down favorite to win the Four Star Cup, but don't be surprised if the Armada comes in and puts up a fight of their own.

The Colorado Raptors raptured the Southwest division throughout the season, finishing with a twelve point gap between 2nd place the Anaheim Outlaws. So even though they finished overall 5th in the league standings, they got a nice week long bye and got a premium chance to scout their likely opponent the number two Anchorage Armada. They will be quite a formidable opponent for the Raptors, as they only were in the opening round of the playoffs because they consisted behind the powerhouse Kelowna Knights, but still finished 2nd in the league in points overall with 95 points. The key for Colorado to win this series is to contain (that’s right contain not stop nobody is stopping these guys) the Armadas deadly top line consisting of Pablo Salvatici, Cole Carter, & Tokkulu Lakkamaa. All of them have 22+ goals & 65+ points proving they are far and away the best line in the SMJHL. Top defensive superstar Eero Makinen Jr will be up to the task, leading all forwards and 2nd in the entire league in blocked shots with 155. Yanno Rosejac will be an integral factor in this series if he can shut down those goddamn boats. Where’s the iceberg???

It was a painful end to the regular season for the St. Louis Scarecrows, dropping their final eight games of the season. But the Crows are a young and resilient bunch and even though the regular season was difficult, they weren't about to let those losses get them down heading into the playoffs. The Scarecrows made big improvements over the course of the season because they had so many rookies forced into key roles on the team, so the expectation from the beginning of the season was that the regular season might not go well, but they were going to be ready to play in the playoffs. They faced a tough first round match-up in defending champs Quebec City, so they weren't exactly confident about winning the series, but they felt ready to give the Citadelles their best shot. Spirits were high and the Crows were ready to play their best hockey. Knowing that they couldn't afford to go up-and-down the ice against the Citadelles, the team decided to lean into their strengths by focusing on the defensive end of the ice and giving extra support to their talented goalie Iorek Byrnison.

It seemed to work for a while. Thanks to some last-minute line-up tinkering, the Scarecrows were able to steal three of the first four games of the series before the wheels fell off. Quebec City was just too deep and experienced, and took the final three games of the series to win it in seven games. But it was valuable playoff experience for a young team that will be back next year, and better ready to make a bigger impact in the playoffs.

The Quebec Owlettes are preparing for the second round of the playoffs much like any French Canadian team would. With lots of poutine and booze, and maple syrup. We are making sure to have a stable diet while at the same time practicing as much as we can to prepare our bodies for the grueling experience to come. With the strong roster that we have as well as the brilliant goalie minding the net; we're confident that we can run it back. We at Quebec have a certain pride as the defending champions. It's our Cup, and it's up to our opponents to take it from us. And they're going to have to wrench it from our cold, unyielding dead hands. It's go time baby, lace up; tape up, and let's get out there and score some slappers. We're going to make this season one to remember; one to tell our children about in years time. Lesgoooo bois, it's fuckin gametime.

Kelowna are preparing for their playoff run by changing absolutely nothing from our regular season run. During the regular season, the Knights went on an absolute tear and dominated nearly everyone they could find in the league, so it goes without saying that keeping things simple and not overcomplicating the next few weeks is as good an idea as any. If there was anywhere the Knights may look to focus their attention in training during the days before their first playoff series, it would likely be on the defensive side of the puck; according to media game ratings, half of the team registered a Defensive Game Rating below 60 - with 1 player (Satoru Gojō) unable to muster more than 51 out of 100. Sure, they only allowed 157 goals in the regular season, good for 2nd in the league - however, given the possession they retained during that timeframe, it does not look as great as it does on the surface. So, if anywhere, teams should look for the Knights to get better in that department.

Alas, my playoff dreams have been dashed! There was a lot to like from the Battleborn this season, despite the unfortunate result, and early exit from the playoffs. In particular Jimmy Larkin-Conway had himself a respectable rookie season, which he followed with a very good showing in Nevada's 5 playoff games, putting up 2g 2a. So preparations are on for next season's playoffs, and you can expect the Battleborn will be a much tougher challenge for any team. If our young players can step up and take over the roles left by graduating players this offseason, then we'll be in a much better position heading into the playoffs, and I wouldn't be surprised if we can snag home ice advantage for the first round. Jimmy is looking forward to getting back to work with his teammates when training camp rolls around, but for now he'll have to settle for training on his own. Battleborn

QCC is preparing for this playoff run by watching film from their last playoff run where they ended up winning the cup. Part of it is to serve as a reminder that we are capable of repeating, but it is mainly so we can understand our weaknesses. We can not afford to get cocky just because we won last year. Even though we won the entire thing, there were mistakes along the way, and being able to recognize those mistakes and prevent them from happening again will only help our chances of repeating.
QCC players are also trying not to overthink things. We are where we are for a reason. If we keep doing what we're doing and not try to change things too drastically, we will do well in the long run. Repeating any two years is obviously hard, but I think QCC has their work cut out for them. That being said, anything can happen and I will certainly try my best to get us back to the ship.

Being the last seed in the league means we need to prepare more than any other team in the league. While The Nevada Battleborn have a very slim chance of coming out on top this postseason, we arent letting up until we are officially out of the running for the chip. One thing that our coach has us doing is literally skating suicides after practice until we are literally puking on the ice. Tough love is what wins championships- Herb Brooks taught it best! Our date with Anchorage sure is scary but we never go into a game thinking we're going to lose, we try our best and accept the outcome for how it is.

The way we look at it is every team isnt going to be a contender every year. While this year might be a peak year for a team like Anchorage or Detroit, Nevada is looking more toward the future with our abundance with young, talented players looking to prove themselves next year.

Our team is preparing in a simple way, just work as hard as we can and hope we can get as good of results as we can. We worked really hard all season and don't want to put any of that to waste. We want to prove that we aren't a team to mess with or take lightly. Everyone, including depth guys like me will play a huge role in our success, and we want to win no matter what it takes. We take our pre-game warmups really seriously, and take pride in the work and concentration that goes into it. We work hard at practice and during training sessions to get to this point, so we want to take all the work, time and sweat from those and use it to do some damage in the playoffs. We hope to go as far as we can, and obviously hope for lots of playoff success.

AS far as the SMJHL Playoff went the Carolina Kraken approached it with the same stance they approach ever series. They attack it 100% and balls to the wall. The Kraken had a game plan of going all out and all offense, and though it didnt work out completely ever member of the team realized it was their best strategy. They decided it was best to push the offensive side of the puck and try to take control of the game and let the offense come later. In the end it wasnt the best idea as they fell short in the series but if you ask any one in Carolina if they would have changed the game plan it would have been a hard no. Carolina was an aggressive team showing up with something to prove and they look to do the same next season and they can not wait for that chancee next season and they can not wait for that chance
