Minnesota Chiefs: Game 7, Offseason, Roster
#1

St. Paul Minnesota

Some time has gone by to heal the wounds of losing game seven in overtime and free agency and the SHL entry draft have provided the General Manager Jon Doran some time away from re-playing game seven in his head over and over again. Any member of the Chiefs will tell you how hard it is to come so close and to come away with nothing. Well, did they really come away with nothing? The organization has grown tremendously in the last two seasons and while they fell short of their goal of winning the Challenge Cup, the Chiefs feel they can take away a lot from the playoffs and finals. Still that thought that one blocked shot, one save, one shot, or one goal could have changed the outcome of game seven stings. Nobody thought that anything could be worse than the eight win season but for many that is proving to be incorrect. Jon Doran has spent nights awake re-playing overtime in his head. Thinking to himself, If only he could have had a little more left in the tank, to get across the ice and block the shot that went in. If he could have done anything, anything at all that could have changed the outcome. It is a very tough pill to swallow. But time heals all wounds and it is time to get ready for the next mountain to climb. The Chiefs are no different from any other SHL team now, all with the same goal of winning the cup.

The Draft
David Winter – Winter was Minnesota’s first pick at 3rd overall. The Chiefs had their eyes set on Winter a while before the draft. Prior to the end of the regular season, the Chiefs felt comfortable that they could grab Winter with their late first round pick. As the draft came closer, the Chiefs re-evaluated the draft and decided that they needed to move up to get the German born winger. So, the Chiefs traded up, twice. They moved from the 9th overall pick to the 5th overall then to the 3rd. Winter will likely spend time on the 2nd and 3rd lines this season. With more acquisitions, the Chiefs are in a position to roll three scoring lines but more on that later.

Gene Parmesan – The Chiefs continue their trend with drafting a defenseman in the 2nd round. Parmesan is a strong puck moving defenseman. Parmesan doesn’t shy from the physical side of things either. He has all in his arsenal to become a great defenseman. With that said being a rookie defenseman in this league is tough. If Parmesan wants to make the transition from the NWJHL to the SHL a smooth one, he will need to focus on a simple game and work on defense first.

That’s it for the draft for the Chiefs, they only had two picks but they made them count.

Free Agency

The Chiefs went out and gave Winger/Center TJ Jock an offer sheet. This will cost Minnesota a 4th round pick but in the management’s eyes it was a draft pick well spent. Jock will likely play on the third line, but with that said he completes the top 9 forwards and gives the Chiefs three potent scoring lines. Look for the top three lines to receive similar minutes with the 4th line providing a very physical presence when they are on the ice.

For now, that is the only free agent the Chiefs have signed but when GM Jon Doran was asked if he was done, this was his response, “We are in talks with a few other free agents. But right now, we don’t know where they stand so that’s all I can say”.

Re-Signings

Many current players are up for a new contract at the end of season 7 and Minnesota has eased some of the fans worries that season 8 may be a rough one if they lose some key players but re-signing a few. Rookies (heading into sophomore seasons) Zach Miller and Zach Myers have signed extensions that will see them in Minnesota for the next few years. Alternate captain Jackson Turska has also just signed a new deal that gives him a much deserved raise and keeps him in Minnesota until season 11. Turska will fill the role of recently departed Zac Goonathan who has re-signed with his former team, the North Stars. Other players heading into free agency in the next off season are team Captain Kyle Derringer, and Giovanni Mortellaro. It is said that they are also currently in talks to sign an extension.

Why not though? I made my player thinking of how much pro athletes weigh and how tall they are; in fact I think I used Scott Stevens old listed weight on wikipedia.

Other people don't do that when making their players? Aggrieved
