Inaugural Draft Exceeds Expectations in Montreal (x2 Draft Media)

With the expansion draft wrapped up, newly minted general manager Danoka got to work quickly. He flipped older, mostly inactive expansion selections for youth and picks. All building up to last night, his team’s first shot at laying the groundwork for their future. All in all, the team selected four players. This draft was unpredictable but Danoka and his team managed to stay focused and selected four future stars. Let’s have a look below at who they chose.

Patriotes Round 1, 1st Overall Patriotes
C, Stan Din’desque
329 TPE
$49,878,000

This pick was leaked, and thus mocked heavily, sometime before the draft so it was no surprise to anyone. User Inf1d3l has been a longtime member on the site, dating back to his first player in S36. Fresh off of a 16 season run with S44’s Barrett McCarthy, Inf1d3l will use his experience in the league to become the poster boy for this fresh franchise. Well known around the league and a member of the SMJHL Head Office, he really seemed like the perfect pick for a new team looking to hit it out of the park with their first pick.

He’ll play next season on a loaded Anaheim team (along with two other fellow S60 rounders). Ice time might be hard to come by, but the fans in Montreal will be watching anxiously to see their future star take the ice.

Patriotes Round 1, 11th Overall Patriotes
LD, Zak Wilson
330 TPE
$23,475,000

If Din’desque is being labeled as “The Next One”, Wilson should be called “The One Immediately After”. A stud of a first gen, user BenDover has quickly accumulated over 23 million SHL bucks in just a few months. General Manager Danoka really wanted to come away with both a high end forward and defender in this draft. So when he and his team picked up on the severe lack of D beyond the first round (there was just one ranked beyond 23rd in this class that was active), they moved quickly to ensure they got their man. When Wilson slipped a few picks, they shipped 17th overall and a future pick to move up to pick number 11.

Playing behind two of the top defenders in the SMJHL, Wen Baters and Luc Blouin, Wilson will likely see 2nd pairing and 2nd powerplay duties next season.

Patriotes Round 2, 24th Overall Patriotes
LW, Roderic Banes
309 TPE
$10,900,000

Yet another first gen pick by Montreal, user Benpachi has been a fantastic earner despite creating about a month after the top earners in his class. Banes averaged the least amount of minutes among Carolina forwards last season, and with the teams loaded roster, he might see a similar role. Despite this, he shaping up to be a solid prospect for Montreal and looks to be a big part of their future.

Patriotes Round 2, 30th Overall Patriotes
LW, Miles O’Brien
248 TPE
$10,100,000

Another late creating first gen, O’Brien was pegged by the team’s scouting staff as a major sleeper in this draft. When their pick came up at 30 (and without another pick until 44th overall) they jumped at the chance to grab O’Brien. Miles should have a pretty solid role in Maine this season, perhaps a top six spot with some powerplay action.

****

Overall, Montreal had a really solid draft. They got their first four prospects, all of which are high earning (both in TPE and money), active members. The team is really trying to build an active locker room, and I think they made the right choice prioritizing the member over the player, if that makes any sense. They didn’t draft solely based on TPE, and I think their locker room will be better for it. Look for this foursome to start to make an impact in the SHL around S63/S64, right at the time that Montreal should start to be a contender.
