San Francisco Pride Draft Recap
June 14, 2021
Talls

Now that the draft has wrapped up, I want to take a quick look at the San Francisco Pride roster (assuming everyone re-signs with the Pride).  I want to write this article to help those around the league understand why the Pride management picked who they picked in the draft.  I will be going over each draft pick's history, stats, and projections going forward.  Finally, I will make a projection for the Pride's division standing at the end of the regular season.

The roster currently stands at:

As you can see, this team is very young, by averages.  They have some high end talent, with a wide separation in TPE.  Let's look at how the team stacks up in a different format:

They has come seriously high end talent and many newer, lower TPE players.  This brings the overall average TPE of the Pride to 855 TPE.  Keep in mind this is for the entire organization and not the team that will eventually be on the ice.  The average of the max positional TPE comes to 1698, which is pretty competitive.  With a team of an average age of 5 seasons, this team is definitely on the up-swing.  There is a lot of young talent that will develop into the future stars of the Pride.

Goalies
[Image: asG2n2l.png]
The goalie group is intriguing.  Nicolae Antonescu has a TPE of 1318 and is only in his 5th season.  He looks to be the starting goal tender for the foreseeable future.  Next, is Geezus Kryyst at 690 TPE and an old timer in his 18th season.  It seems a prime time for Kryyst to retire with two younger goaltenders coming up in the wings.  If he wanted to, Kryyst could probably get a roster spot for just one more season.  Benjamin Blue II, is interesting.  He is at 373 TPE in only his second season.  He is currently a FA which makes things interesting as the Pride drafted Senji Seteki in the first round.  Blue II seems like a prime suspect of being trade bait.  The last goalie, Senji Seteki, was drafted in the first round of the S60 draft.  He is a year younger and only 38 TPE behind Blue II.  This further causes a reasonable person to believe he will be soon moved to another SHL team.  The Pride seem to have a really long future of successful goalies with this unit.

Forwards

The Pride have a plethora of forward talent.  The TPE curve seems to be more exponential than a contending team.  This backs up the fact that the forwards are so young, with a average age of 4 seasons.  Once all of these young players mature in 2-3 seasons, the Pride has a real chance to become dominate.  The forward group has a great leader in Sven Svenson and a great mentor in Henrik Lekberg Osterman.  Of all of these forwards, only 4 are obviously behind in their development, and that only accounts for 25% of the group.  That is a 75% success rate, another indicator of a soon-to-be contending team.  That being said, those players in that lowest 25% percentile could always pick up steam and move out of that grouping.

Defensemen

The Pride have a core set of defensemen but they definitely will want to build out the blue line in the near term.  They have a great, young core with an average TPE of 1075 and an average age of 4 seasons.  The only issue I have with this corps is that there are so few players.  Realistically, the Pride only have 1 prospect, while the other 6 are on the roster.  If any of the members of the blue line have a turn for the worst in their career, there is only one person right now that can come up to replace them.  But, if the Pride can keep this group together and wait it out, this is a cup caliber defensemen group.

Drafted Players
The first round draft pick for the San Francisco Pride was taken at the 17th position, after trading back from the 11th position with the expansion Montreal Patriotes, was goal tender Senji Seteki.  This was a bit of a surprise for the Simulation Hockey League community, as Olof Karsikko was still on the board as the number one rated goal tender.  On top of that, the Pride already had the goal tender of the future in Benjamin Blue II.  As discussed before, rumors of an impending trade of Blue II have been circulating.

Seteki is out of the Colorado Raptors, who was signed as a free agent in the S59 season.  He was brought in to replace the aging Yanno Rosejac in the years to come.  In his first year, he posted a regular season stat line of 14 GP, 5-3-2, 2.77 GAA, 1 SO, 0.906 Sv%, and a 64 game rating.  Not too bad for a rookie goal tender.  Obviously, he has gained a lot of experience in his one season going from 155 TPE to 335 TPE.

In the second round, with the 31st pick, the San Francisco Pride selected right wing LaTrell McDonald.  McDonald comes out of the Anchorage Armada.  He was a 3rd round draft pick for Anchorage.  He comes to the Pride with 302 TPE and plans to really take advantage of the new training techniques released by the league.  In the regular season, McDonald recorded 22-16-38, +28 +/-, 6 PIM, 15.4% S%, and a 57 game rating.  He was an integral part of the Armada's deep run in the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League playoffs.  If he keeps his present trajectory, he will be a great player for the Pride for seasons to come.

Final Projections
I think that is abundantly clear that the San Francisco Pride will be in the middle, to back of the pack this year in the Pacific division.  The Pride are getting close, though.  Only a few more seasons for those players in the 500 - 1000 TPE range to mature.  Once that happens, it will be difficult for anyone to keep up with the Pride.

Senji Seteki is just the 3rd goalie in franchise history to be selected in the 1st round. Ian Venables in S50 and Kyle Wahlgren in S31 being the other two.
