S59 IIHF Day 7 Recap
(754 words, ready for grading)

Well here we are, at the end of the round robin portion of the IIHF tournament! The elimination rounds are set with Group A and Group B facing off as follows:

Group A will see Team Norway facing off against Team Germany, who won their final game against Team Austria to make it in over Finland. Team Japan will face off against Team Sweden, who dropped their final matchup against Team Norway and had to settle for second place. Group B will see Team USA face off against Team Czechia, who narrowly beat out Team Great Britain to make it into the elimination round, and Team Switzerland against Team Russia, who had a pretty strong tournament.

Here are the current standings after the seventh day of sims:

USA 5 - GBR 4

This game between Team USA and Team Great Britain started a little slow but ramped up in intensity as the periods went on. Team USA opened the scoring in the first, and again in the second, before Team Great Britain could net their first goal on the power play. The third period saw a total of six goals between the two teams, as Team Great Britain desperately tried to equalize in order to keep their elimination round hopes alive. However, the early goals given up were too much to overcome, and Team Great Britain would fall short, thus ending their hopes of continuing on to the next round.

IRL 3 - GER 4

Team Ireland opened strong, scoring two goals in the first period, but the second was all Team Germany, as two power play goals powered their momentum. Austin Roenick had a goal in the third period for Team Ireland, but they were not able to get another as an equalizer, handing Team Germany the win and the berth to the elimination rounds. Vlatislav Malik and Alexander Roach seemed to compete for who could throw the most hits, with 5 hits apiece between the two of them.

AUT 4 - LTV 5

Team Austria and Team Latvia had a bit of a shootout, as both teams took turns scoring goals with a final score of 4 to 5 for Team Latvia. Mats Marner nearly had a hat-trick in the third period, scoring the game winning goal at 15:35 off a nice pass from Asclepius Perseus Flitterwind. A few further chances were turned away by Cale Amundsen, denying Marner a natural hat-trick. Team Latvia’s Nat Emerson took a tripping misconduct, but would come back to score a goal (and get another penalty soon after) in the third.

GBR 7 - RUS 3

Team Great Britain seemingly took out their frustration from the last game out on Team Russia, as they shelled Evgeni Petrov for seven goals in this game. Ren-Ekelemichi Shimizu-Okoli had two goals and an assist in his best game of the tournament. Both of his goals came in the second period, bookending goals from Grape Fruit and Nick Brain as they also scored. Vaseline Podcalzone had a goal in the third, but it was otherwise quiet as both teams settled in to end the tournament, with Team Great Britain heading home and Team Russia advancing.

NOR 4 - SWE 1

The battle for dominance of Group A ended up with Team Norway on top. Yngve Simonsson opened the scoring for Team Sweden, but a boneheaded delay-of-game penalty by Magnus Liljestrom set up Dwight Knight to score on the power play, followed by Goku Muerto on another power play later on in the period. Team Sweden was unable to muster much offence after that, with Team Norway scoring a goal in each remaining period to hold a 4-1 lead to the end.

AUT 1 - CZE 5

Team Czechia handily secured their spot in the elimination round with a 5-1 win over Team Austria, tripling the number of shots that Team Austria managed to put on goaltender Knox Booth. Team Austria goaltender Cale Amundsen did well, turning away 52 out of 57 shots and holding Team Czechia to only 5 goals on numerous high-danger chances.

Next time we come back, we’ll be finding out which teams advance to the semifinal rounds of the IIHF tournament! We will also have a new medal winner since four or five seasons ago, as Team Canada and Team Great Britain, both of whom have traded off having the gold medal, are not in the running this season!
