Preseason. A time for teams to display their whack strategies or a time to put up a smokescreen and attempt to fake out other teams? For most teams it’s the latter. Well here’s what Nevada Battle Born plans to do from some insider knowledge. First of all, the team trusts Willie Miller as a goalie implicitly and really want him to shine. Therefore we plan on running exactly zero defense. Everyone on the line have been instructed to not waste any TPE at all on defensive stats. Having our first round draft pick be the defensive moose was just a ploy. Sure some goals will get through Miller as the season progresses, but we’re not dumb enough to run an empty net. That way we can always score 10+ goals on average during each game. Easy peasy.

Then, Wing Wang, being the most aggressive player is free to get in as many fights as he wants. This way, any opposing player that gets their ass kicked by a wurmple will be demoralized for the rest of the series and rendered incapable of making plays. Nevada Battle Born then wins the SJHMJHL Cup.

As the youngest defenseman on the Berserkers' roster this season, Jannik didn't really have a say as to what pairing he would play on. However, the coaches saw his immediate chemistry with Sabarro Torretta - probably due to their Swiss origins - and they formed what could be called the "3rd pair", if only because the roster is already filled to the brim with future SHL stars and veterans of the SMJHL, and there simply isn't a way to truly compete for ice time for Nordstern. At 5v5, his role on the pairing is to smother the left winger as much as possible, and relay the puck to the center (Robert Black and Nike Kickz Jr. are particularly effective at being at the right spot, at the right time). However, the more he plays in 3v3 situations in practice, the more he realizes he can work his body on most forwards in the league... except for the really shifty ones. He's also started to carry the puck a bit more on his own, instead of simply relaying the puck to Torretta. Now that he has seen a few pre-season games, the coaches are slowly but surely integrating Jannik into their penalty kill, and he's learning a lot under the guidance of Pasta The Turtle, his D-partner in those situations. For a rookie, you couldn't ask for a better place to grow into a more important role - and get used to the tactics used on different days.

After the first couple of preseason games, it is clear that the 2nd defensive pairing of the Colorado Raptors, made up by RD Hans Graf and LD Jamal Nightingale, is a defensive focused pair ready to disrupt opposing top lines.

Hans’ skills are going to be vital for the effectiveness of this strategy. With his focus on defensive abilities like shot blocking and stick checking, he has what it takes to elevate the play of his pairing and his team. This mindset will also lead to becoming a great PK asset. When the team is shorthanded, Hans will be able to hunker down and shut down the opposing skaters, mainly by being able to block the shooting lanes and getting his stick in the way.

If he keeps his training up and further develops these skills, there is a bright future ahead of Hans Graf as a great shutdown defenseman not only for the Raptors, but in the SHL.

From the looks of it, Landon Fischermann will be playing on the right side of the second pairing alongside Sven Svechnikov this season. It is a lot of responsibility for the rookie, but Sven is a very capable partner and will be able to cover many of Landon's early season miscues. The best role for Landon to be in with the Whalers is a two way defenseman based on his current skill set.

Now, that may make it more difficult for him playing in his own zone, however with Sven there, it should mitigate the risk. Landon needs to show off his speed and he is responsible enough defensively that he shouldn't be caught out too often. He fared pretty well in this role in his first four preseason games. In those games he posted one point (0-1=1), a -1 rating, 8 shots, 4 hits, 3 blocked shots, 4 takeaways and an average time on ice of 18:26.

Obviously he would like to be on the plus side instead of -1, but when you consider that the Whalers didn't get off to a great start yesterday (0-3-1), -1 for a rookie averaging almost eighteen and a half minutes on the ice is not too bad. Things should turn around for the Whalers given their skill, and that should turn things around for Fischermann. One thing is for certain, as long as he stays with Svechnikov, he will be well on his way to success in this league.

Patya had a rough first day of preseason. The team decided to shuffle the lines randomly to test our their new roster, and Patya ended up playing center on the 4th line while being very poor at faceoffs. After the day was over, the GM and coaches, along with Patya, had a small chat. "Patya am much for offense playing, am not for faceoff taking," he said. As discussions progressed, Patya said he didn't mind holding down a 3rd or 4th line center role, but that he needed a heads up beforehand so that he could work with the player coaches to get better at taking faceoffs. Everyone agreed that this wouldn't be the worst solution to the problem, as the team is a bit light on centers this season, but that Patya's dynamic offensive capabilities would be better utilized if they could make him a monster winger on an anchoring line. Patya was excited, exclaiming "WOWEE, PATYA TIME!" Yes, Patya, it IS Patya Time...at home, on the right wing, where you belong.

With preseason done and dusted, it's now time to look towards the regular season. I have been getting along with my teammates and have been dishing out a good pass every now and then. I trust my GM's on where they put me, as I'm just a team player. I do my best when my teammates are doing well, just making sure the other forwards are getting good chances, while also coming back to help the defense on my wing. As much as I want to do well, I know I don't have to fret if I make a mistake, as although there's a young core of creatures around me, I still trust them to back me up, as I do them, and together, we will be the best team in the SMJHL!

After seeing his performance in the preseason, the Citadelles coach approached Samuel Kjellsson to discuss his role on the team moving into the regular season. While the team had a rough preseason, Kjellsson had a few standout moments, such as a 5-SB game vs Anchorage early on.

"We're going to put you with Gardner."

Ryan Gardner is an aggressive, defensively-minded veteran blueliner from whom Kjellsson could learn a lot. While Samuel's game is less physical and in-your-face, both men focus primarily on defense and play a stay-at-home role on the ice. The coach explains further that they want the two to form a shutdown pairing, to be played against the other team's stars. This is, of course, a lot of trust to put in a rookie, but they feel that, under Gardner's guidance, Kjellsson will be able to thrive in this role. He agrees, and is excited to start the season in his new role.

After the preseason, Colorado's 4th line of Max Manning, Kristián Ženatík and Fedor Sotakov will most likely play together in the regular season. With two centers, in Max and  Kristián, the coaches and GMs ultimately had to decide on who would take facepffs. In the end, Max's better faceoff skill and rating gave him the upper hand. However, in the preseason games, the line was absolutely dominated in Even Strength play, with all three getting shelled in all possession and rate statistics, with an average 35.4% corsi, 34.6% Fenwick and over 44 shots per 60 allowed. Defense definitely needs work. Now moving on, the focus for the line was to have a balanced two way game, chipping in with some goals and also helping prevent them. Especially with a little over 10 TOI, it's important to make the most out of your time and be responsible on offense and defense.

With Max himself, he has good playmaking abilities along with an ok defensive game, he is looking at playing a good game at both ends of the rink. With a good passing, puck handling and offensive reads, he mostly looks for others for scoring chances as he moves the puck into the offensive zone, but will need to shoot more at times when the opportunity presents. He only took 2 shot in 70 total minutes!

It wasn’t the hottest start for Conner Snooks, who had been signed halfway through the preseason for the Nevada BattleBorn. Snooks was signed to fill a winger position and as he likes to put it “take out the trash”. The only problem is Nevada seems to be generating zero trash for Snooks to take out. In the 3 preseason games that Snooks played, Nevada averaged just 19 shots to their opponents 50!! They must be composting their food waste and recycling their plastics over there in Las Vegas.

In a very confusing choice, Conner actually was playing Defense for some of Nevada’s penalty kill in their 7-0 loss to Colorado. Coach must really want star goaltender Willie Miller to get some practice in. Conner would be better paired with more offensively minded line mates who like to take shots and generate rebounds for Conner to put away.

Despite not winning a single preseason game, the team does seem to be coming together. With 13 rookies on the squad, the team will be able to grow together, and who knows, come playoff time Nevada could have a group of Gillette young guns with good chemistry (and clean baby faces ready for that playoff scruff).

The Colorado Raptors were very impressed with the dynamic play of Donald Trump Jr. During preseason he was able to put up two goals and an assist for a total of three points through seven games, definitely more than what was expected from the bottom six grinder. One impressive moment came when Trump was sprung for a breakaway and with his slick dekes faked out Nevada's goalie for his first of the preseason. However where Donald Jr. really signed, and his biggest strength he brings to the table, was with his hits. Through the seven preseason games Donald Trump Jr. recorded fourteen hits, tied for eighth highest in the entire preseason. For the rookie to be putting up those sorts of physical numbers is an impressive feat, and one he hopes to improve on and bring to the ice during the regular season as part of his role in the Colorado bottom six. Trump will be expected to get into the boards, work his way into the tough puck battles, and use his body and his physicality to disrupt the opposing team, create chaos on the ice, and hopefully draw penalties and ruffle their feathers. The only goals he will be expected to get will be greasy goals in front of the goal, but the fact that his offensive game isn't completely inept means that the other team will still have to give him some respect on that end of the ice.
