If the J had fantasy… Goalie Leaders
Back before I was a member, there might have been SMJHL fantasy, I'm honestly not sure. I thought it might be fun for those of us still in the SMJHL to take a look at who the potential fantasy leaders would be, as we are currently about a third of a way through the SMJHL season. To start off, let’s take a look at each team’s goalies, and see who would have been the top picks in fantasy. This is how SHL fantasy goalie scores are currently calculated: Wins: 5 points (W * 5) Shutouts: 5 points (SO * 5) Saves: 0.1 points ([SA - GA] * 0.1) Overall, this is how the teams shook out. More detailed stats are shown below. 1 - Anchorage Armada (165.8) 2 - Carolina Kraken (155.5, -10.3) 3 - Colorado Raptors (151.5, -14.3) 4 - Vancouver Whalers (150.6, -15.2,) 5 - Newfoundland Berserkers (143.5, -22.3) 6 - Detroit Falcons (142.4, -23.4) 7 - Anaheim Outlaws (141.3, -24.5) 8 - Quebec City Citadelles (139.3, -26.5) 9 - Kelowna Knights (137.6, -28.2) 10 - St. Louis Scarecrows (133.8, -32.0) 11 - Maine Timber (124.3, -41.5) 12 - Nevada Battleborn (107.6, -58.2) While there are some pretty big discrepancies across the board, some of the teams are bunched up quite close together and can be considered to be in the same tier. While this does mostly correlate with the current SMJHL standings, the correlation is not perfect. Here is the ranking again, with current standing shown: 1 - 1st - Anchorage Armada (165.8) 2 - 3rd - Carolina Kraken (155.5, -10.3) 3 - 5th - Colorado Raptors (151.5, -14.3) 4 - 4th - Vancouver Whalers (150.6, -15.2) 5 - 2nd - Newfoundland Berserkers (143.5, -22.3) 6 - 8th - Detroit Falcons (142.4, -23.4) 7 - 7th - Anaheim Outlaws (141.3, -24.5) 8 - 6th - Quebec City Citadelles (139.3, -26.5) 9 - 11th - Kelowna Knights (137.6, -28.2) 10 - 9th - St. Louis Scarecrows (133.8, -32.0) 11 - 10th - Maine Timber (124.3, -41.5) 12 - 12th - Nevada Battleborn (107.6, -58.2) Let’s take a more detailed look at all of the teams: Anaheim Outlaws Zhen Roza: 10-6-3, 1 SO, 675 SAV (122.5) Charlie Bombay: 2-1-0, 0 SO, 88 SAV (18.8) Total: 122.5 + 18.8 = 141.3 The Anaheim Outlaws come in at 7th, exactly matching their 7th place standing. The bulk of the work as been done by their starter, Zhen Roza. Not much of the fantasy contribution is coming from shutouts with only 1, and saves are contributing a significant portion to the fantasy score. Anchorage Armada Ethan Bravo: 16-3-2, 2 SO, 469 SAV (136.9) Bean Gamble: 3-0-0, 1 SO, 89 SAV (28.9) Total: 136.9 + 28.9 = 165.8 Just like in the SMJHL standings, the Anchorage Armada are atop the fantasy goalie rankings. Their win totals made them difficult to beat, with their backup Bean Gamble stealing 3 wins in his 3 games started. This coupled with 3 team shutouts gave them a healthy 10.3 point lead over their closest competitor, the Carolina Kraken. Carolina Kraken Osada Tamura: 11-1-0, 3 SO, 294 SAV (99.4) Meeka Keprosoft: 5-6-1, 0 SO, 361 SAV (56.1) Total: 99.4 + 56.1 = 155.5 The Carolina Kraken are doing well to be in 2nd place as much of their load has been shared by their two goaltenders. Osada Tamura’s 3 shutouts have also prevented the Kraken from sliding down a few places in the fantasy goalie standings. Colorado Raptors Senji Seteki: 14-8-0, 2 SO, 585 SAV (138.5) Yanno Rosejac: 1-1-0, 0 SO, 80 SAV (13.0) Total: 138.5 + 13.0 = 151.5 The Raptors find themselves in 3rd in the goalie rankings, outperforming their league standing of 5th. Their backup, Yanno Rosejac has not seen much action, only contributing 13.0 fantasy points. Their starter has pumped up their fantasy stats. Detroit Falcons Podan Podanovic: 11-11-1, 2 SO, 771 SAV (142.1) Monster The Doctor: 0-0-0, 0 SO, 3 SAV (0.3) Total: 142.1 + 0.3 = 142.4 The Detroit Falcons see themselves in 6th in the goalie rankings despite their league standing of 8th. This may be due to their backup goalie, Monster The Doctor playing a league-low 3 minutes. In those minutes, he saved 3 out of 5 shots he faced. Podanovic has been inflating the fantasy stats, even though it would be nice for the Falcons to carry their outperformance in the fantasy rankings for the rest of the season. Kelowna Knights Benjamin Blue-II: 4-12-0, 1 SO, 610 SAV (86.0) Jason Playstation: 1-8-0, 0 SO, 466 SAV (51.6) Total: 86.0 + 51.6 = 137.6 Kelowna is another outperforming team, being 9th in the fantasy goalie rankings, and currently 11th in the league. Almost all of their fantasy points have come from saves. If they string a few wins together, they could see themselves rising up the fantasy rankings rather quickly. Backup Jason Playstation could definitely manage to steal some wins for them in the future and improve that W-L record. Maine Timber Bloody Oath: 4-15-0, 0 SO, 673 SAV (87.3) Rusty Remao: 2-3-0, 0 SO, 270 SAV (37.0) Total: 87.3 + 37.0 = 124.3 Unfortnately, the Maine Timber find themselves close in performance to their league standing of 10th, coming in at 11th in the goalie rankings. Just like Kelowna, stringing a few wins together would easily see them rise up the rankings with those save totals. Nevada Battleborn Willie Miller: 1-15-0, 0 SO, 675 SAV (72.5) Harley Fank: 1-5-0 0 SO, 301 SAV (35.1) Total: 72.5 + 35.1 = 107.6 The Nevada Battleborn are all-in on youth, and they find themselves at the bottom of the league standings and the fantasy goalie rankings, with all but 10 of their fantasy points coming from saves. That’s okay, because their goalies are sporting strong save percentages of 0.912 and 0.902, so they should see some improvement in the future. Newfoundland Berserkers Evgeni Petrov: 15-2-1, 1 SO, 346 SAV (114.6) Jonas Johansson 3-2-0, 0 SO, 139 SAV (28.9) Total: 114.6 + 28.9 = 143.5 Unfortunately, the Berserkers find themselves quite a bit lower in the fantasy rankings (5th) than their league standing (2nd). Despite being a team with a fairly strong defense, the team has only managed to put together one shutout. With a bit of puck luck, this could change in the future. Quebec City Citadelles Nor Dekes: 13-9-1, 1 SO, 693 SAV (139.3) Total: 139.3 + 0.0 = 139.3 A bit of an oddity at 8th in the fantasy rankings, and 6th in the league standings, the Quebec City Citadelles haven’t seemed to play their backup for a single minute so far, and we’re about a third into the season. This is pretty close to Detroit’s situation, with their backup only playing 3 minutes so far. St. Louis Scarecrows Iorek Bynison: 6-10-4, 1 SO, 632 SAV (98.2) Jack Lewis: 3-2-0, 1 SO, 156 SAV (35.6) Total: 98.2 + 35.6 = 133.8 St. Louis’ 9th place standing in the SMJHL has landed them 10th in the fantasy goalie rankings. A couple more shutouts could see them outperforming in fantasy. Vancouver Whalers Olof Karsikko: 13-6-2, 3 SO, 564 SAV (136.4) Ivan Browning: 2-0-0, 0 SO, 42 SAV (14.2) Total: 136.4 + 14.2 = 150.6 Last but not least, we have the Vancouver Whalers coming in at 4th in the fantasy rankings, matching their league standing. Their starter has done most of the work here, and has done a good job to bolster his team with 3 shutouts so far this season. Code: 1362 words ----------
