Kanye South’s Origin Story

(This post was last modified: 07-19-2021, 11:36 PM by Zman. Edit Reason: Color bad )

Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, South’s first favorite sport was basketball, not hockey. In Chicago he would hoop at parks near him, playing up to 14 and 15 year olds when he was only 10. He was known in the streets as “Breezy” because he was known for using his quickness, speed, and agility to “breeze” past his opponents on his way to the hoop. It wasn’t until he was 13, when the passing of his mother forced his father to relocate them to Duluth, Minnesota. After the move, everything changed. Instead of basketball being the main sport, it was hockey. Once Kanye picked up the stick, there was no stopping him. Breezy “breezed” through his younger competition, quickly rising up the ranks of his local teams. By the time he was in high school, there was buzz of him getting a full ride scholarship to the prestigious in-city hockey school, University of Minnesota-Duluth. In his senior year, he showed out, scoring 2 goals per game and getting at least 3 assists while leading his school to a state title. He inevitably got the scholarship to his hometown school UMD. Once in college, it was much of the same. He quickly breezed through the ranks and becoming a first line starter in his freshman year. He struggled with injuries throughout his Sophomore and Junior years though, falling way down the depth charts and losing some of the quickness that coined him the nickname “Breezy” when he was younger. But he came back for his senior year with a vengeance. By the time they were into their 5th game, he was playing like a star, averaging 2.5 points a game. In the first game of the playoffs, the biggest game of South’s career, he collided with opposing player, Tommy Tightpants. This would cause both players to have to leave the game, later revealing that Kanye had snapped his kneecap, and that Tightpants had torn his ACL. Both injuries threatened the players chances at being drafted in the upcoming SHL draft. Come draft day, South would not hear his name called. He did many workouts around the league, but no teams were interested enough to offer him a contract. After his failure to get a job in the NHL, South pursued other potential professional hockey avenues. He ended up in Russia, playing in the Moscow-based Kontinental League. After 2 years playing for the Ak Bars Kazan, he heads back to the US looking for a chance in the SHL. Results to be determined.
