(GRADED) DD2: How Majestik-Moose lived up to the hype of going 2oa in the SMJHL Draft

Melvin Majestik-Moose is a friend of mine from the ISFL and went second overall in the S60 SMJHL entry draft, an impressive feat but not a surprising one, given that Moose came in with some incredible activity and is frankly an incredible person to interact with. When a player goes that high in the draft, you have high expectations for them, and Majestik-Moose has certainly met and probably even exceeded those expectations in their rookie campaign.

You may wonder how a moose can play hockey. I’m not entirely sure either and I wish the sim could provide better visuals. Does the Moose lace up four skates? If so, I’d imagine they could achieve a frankly incredible speed. Not to mention the terrifying antlers that can be used both to terrorize the puck handlers and block shots. I mean have you ever seen just how huge the antlers are on a moose? In any case, it seems that a moose is, in fact, well suited to the game of hockey.

Majestik-Moose was slotted in at RD, which is unsurprising given that nearly everyone SDCore recruited from the Yeti over in the ISFL created at defense. Plus there’s the whole thing about antlers being a great tool for shot blocking, which Majestik-Moose excelled at. Majestik-Moose managed to block an impressive 136 shots during the regular season, which was good for second best on the Battleborn roster, behind only Maxwell Carrigan, who lead the league. In fact, Majestik-Moose, as a rookie, managed to come fifth in the league in shots blocked and was only three blocks away from finishing in the top three. This is an incredibly impressive display of fearlessness for a true rookie.

If that isn’t impressive enough for you, Majestik-Moose finished the season with 29 takeaways, good for fourth best on the team and the third best defender on the Battleborn roster. With “only” 24 giveaways, Moose finished with a positive ratio, a feat that only one other player on the Battleborn roster managed (RW Anton Harrier had 25 takeaways and only 22 giveaways).

When you see a -23 in the +/- statline, you probably aren’t impressed. But consider that -23 was 8th best on the Battleborn roster and remind yourself that the Battleborn finished last in the league with a -184 differential. With those two things in mind, a -23 is not terrible. Context is important, after all.

One might also expect a rookie to take a lot of penalties. After all, they are inexperienced and probably do not quite have the refined stickhandling and positioning skills of their veteran teammates. And while Majestik-Moose did take 28 penalty minutes, the total is respectable, given that Throat Goat had 78, which is impressive. Imagine missing an entire game’s worth of time by taking penalties. Majestik-Moose generally did a good job staying out of the box, which is an essential ability to have if you want your team to be successful in the long run.

And if that isn’t enough to impress you, Majestik-Moose finished the season with 18 points. That is not super impressive on its own, but Majestik-Moose was the second best on the Battleborn roster in points among defensemen and was 8th on the roster overall in assists.

Majestik-Moose, after being selected 2nd overall in the Rookie draft, posted impressive shot blocking numbers and appears poised to make significant contributions for the Battleborn in the future.
