After a long draft at the beginning of season 60, two defensemen were selected by the Vancouver Whalers, Landon Fischermann and Conner Tanner. Today we will be looking into their stats and comparing their strengths and weaknesses to see how the Whalers defense will shape up over the coming seasons.

Landon Fischermann
Position: Right Defense | Handedness: Right
Number: 25 | Weight: 205 | Height: 6'4"

GP: 66
Goals: 8
Assists: 13
Points: 21
Plus Minus: 7
Penalty Minutes: 12
Hits: 86
Shots blocked: 77

A fairly balanced defenseman, nothing sticks out as his primary skillset and looking at his stats that seems to double down on the fact that none of his skills are off the page, but none of them are lacking either. He played well in his own end, but according the advanced metrics struggled at putting the pressure on the other team while on the ice. Though his was an overall plus in terms of goals for and goals against, but that may be due to the offensive presence of the Vancouver Whalers as an organization. Fischermann has been one of the most active players in regards to on-ice training, as he continues to impress coaches at how much he has been working, coaches saying that he has spent approximately 309 hours in the gym and on the ice working on his skills this seasons, and incredibly high amount for a rookie defender. Drafted with the 11th pick of the 3rd round, 35th overall, Landon Fischermann has outplayed his draft position significantly as he currently ranks the 11th best prospect in terms of scouting analysis. Which just goes to show you how hard work pays off significantly.

Conner Tanner
Position: Left Defense | Handedness: Left
Number: 73 | Weight: 240 | Height: 6'6"

GP: 66
Goals: 10
Assists: 20
Points: 30
Plus Minus: 32
Penalty Minutes: 60
Hits: 255 (League leader)
Shots blocked: 51

A big bodied bruiser reminiscent of Danny "Bananas" Foster or Turd Ferguson, Conner Tanner as a rookie led the league in hits, while also being an above average skater according to all advanced metrics as his CF% relative and FF% relative were just below zero, though his shots for and against as well as goals for and against were very pleasing to the eye, especially for a rookie. Many say that Tanner has been riding the coattails of his family name, and that was the only reason he was selected with the 3rd pick in the second round, 15th overall by the Vancouver Whalers. Many cite the fact that he has fallen down to 30th in terms of prospect rankings, but when asked about the ranking Conner's agent cited the fact that many scouts do not see what is going on behind closed doors. As he states there is as many as 20 undocumented hours of training for Tanner. As a skater though, Tanner looks to veer away from his families clean defensive style of play in favour of booming hits to keep skaters off balance when he is on the ice. In terms of a future, Vancouvers is bright when it comes to defensive prowess. As Tanner and Fischermann both look like resounding successes by the Vancouver Whalers scouting department.
