[2x Draft Payout] S61 New Orleans Specters Draft Review
#1

Hey folks! We have another Simulation Hockey League entry draft in the books, and that means we're welcoming a whole new crew of Specters to New Orleans. The purple spooky bois are one of the most storied franchises in the league, but times have been tough lately after some departures. Fortunately, the last few drafts and some free agent pick ups have got the Specters on the right track, though it might take another season till they get on their feet. This latest crop of future Specters may be the strongest yet, with a tremendous pedigree and depth of talent that we haven't seen in some time. I want to take a moment to highlight those players, talk a bit about them, and welcome them to New Orleans.

Round 1, Pick 2

Atticus Hale

Forward
Carolina Kraken Kraken
@the5urreal
317 TPE (9th in class)
S61 SMJHL Stat Line: 7 G, 12 A, 6 +/-, 24 PIM, 19 BLK, 24 HIT
Round 1, Pick 8
The first pick for New Orleans, Atticus Hale and 5urreal are welcome additions to the Specters. A newcomer to the league, 5urreal has already made a name for themselves as a solid contributor and strong locker room presence, both things the Specters value highly. His player, Atticus Hale, had a solid season for the Kraken and is within the top 10 in terms of total TPE for the class. But this pick really shows that TPE isn't anything, particularly when you're looking at the top of the first round. So many people just look at the total TPE numbers from the class and then mock off of that, but they miss the stuff that isn't tracked as easily in a spreadsheet. We couldn't be happier to have 5urreal on the team, and for Atticus Hale to start leading the Specters in a few seasons' time.

Tomas Zadina

Forward
Kelowna Knights Knights
@caltroit_red_flames
319 TPE (8th in class)
S61 SMJHL Stat Line: 11 G, 12 A, -22 +/-, 2 PIM, 147 BLK, 117 HIT
The Specters traded up back into the first round to get this pick and boy was it worth it. Cal is one of the great users in the league and his player, Tomas, will be a great fit on the team. Zadina had a strong year for the struggling Knights, and managed to produce for a team that never really found their footing during the season. Still, he had double-digit goals and assists and brought a very strong physical game to the Knights. We're excited to see what he'll do in New Orleans purple and to have Cal be a part of our locker room going forward.
Round 2, Pick 21

Giannis Kroustis

Forward
Vancouver Whalers Whalers
@Air Crou
311 TPE (16th in class)
S61 SMJHL Stat Line: 11 G, 16 A, 26 +/-, 12 PIM, 42 BLK, 53 HIT
The first pick of the second round (so basically a first rounder), the Specters welcome Air Crou and his player, Giannis Kroustis. Air Crou is a sim league veteran, and will bring his experience and expertise to New Orleans as we continue to advance and get ourselves back into content. Giannis, for his part, had a good year for the first place Whalers, putting up solid offensive and defensive numbers on an otherwise crowded roster. Its not always easy to make a mark on a team as deep as Vancouver, but Giannis managed to do just that. While he missed out, barely, on the first round, we think that AC is a first round talent and we're glad to have him on New Orleans!
Round 2, Pick 36

Conner Tanner

Defense
Vancouver Whalers Whalers
@Keygan
311 TPE (16th in class)
S61 SMJHL Stat Line: 10 G, 20 A, 32 +/-, 60 PIM, 51 BLK, 255 HIT
No, that isn't a typo when it comes to hits last season. The only defenseman taken by the Specters in this draft, but its always about quality over quantity. Keygan is a user that needs no introduction, and we're very excited to have him in New Orleans and to experience some better weather than whatever they have up in Edmonton. During our long wait between pick #21 and pick #36, we were watching as Keygan remained available and we were ecstatic to take him with our last pick in the draft. His player, Conner Tanner, had a very strong season for the Whalers, amassing a very impressive +/- and blocked shots/hits on the season. Here's hoping that Conner will be able to follow in the footsteps of legendary New Orleans' defenseman Lyle Odelein III. We can't wait to see and to have him join our team full-time!
And that is the summary for the New Orleans Specters' draft! Its no secret that this is a team that has struggled for the last few seasons, but given the exceptionally young core and developing talent, this should be a team to watch closely in the next couple of seasons. This should be one of the youngest, hungriest clubs in the league and the other teams are going to have to keep an eye out for the youth movement in New Orleans. There's only 23 players with more than 300 TPE in the S61 class at this moment, and the Specters got four of them with some tremendous users to boot.
I am incredibly excited for the Specters' seasons to come. The last few drafts have had way more hits than misses, and the team is going in the right direction. With 5urreal, Cal, AC, and Keygan being added to the roster, the sky is the limit. While there will be some growing pains, and the transformation won't be happening overnight, the New Orleans Specters got a lot stronger after this most recent draft and now all we need is a little bit of time to allow these young players to develop and grow. I appreciate everyone who took some time to read this and once again, welcome our future New Orleans Specters, its great to have you!
