(GRADED) [Deep Dive #2] - Anchorage Armada Draft Recap

After being the de facto second place team by losing to the Newfoundland Berserkers in the season 60 Four Start Cup Championship, the Anchorage Armada have a chance to win in season 61 if they were able to have a good offseason. With an impressive 46-17-3 record, they had one of the better regular season record last year and took it to game six in the final against the Berserkers before their storied playoffs came to an end. They were able to keep their regular season point leader Mikhail Novikov for season 61 but after losing a few other players to the SHL, they needed to get some good players in the draft to have a shot in season 61. From a few trades they ended up having two picks in the first round which will do a lot to help them rebuild their near championship team.
With the second pick in the season 61 SMJHL entry draft, a pick the got in a trade from Nevada, the Anchorage Armada picked Paul Koivu. Paul is a high profile left wing, left shot forward from Lavel, Canada who had plenty of talk from scouting before the draft. Paul is a well-balanced forward who is truly and jack of all trades. A dynamic playmaker who excels at getting open when it counts, making plays by landing that key pass, dangling around defenseman, and having a top-notch hockey IQ on top of all his other assets. We’ll soon be seeing Paul high on the assist count as the season goes by and I’m sure his linemates will thank him for it. He can always be seen training beefing up so enemy defenders can be sure that they won’t be able to push him around. All in all a great pick-up for the Armada.
With the 13th pick in the entry draft, the Armada picked the pirate king himself, Spack Jarrow. Spack is a right shot, left wing forward with a past wrapped in mystery. No one know exactly where he is from but wherever it is they probably love hockey to make such high level player. Spack is a well balanced forward who excels at puckhandling, shooting accuracy, positioning, and stickchecking while being highly talented at most other aspect of the game. Look for Spack to be playing on the line behind Paul and potentially on the second powerplay where he’ll score plenty of goals and have some of the highest number of takeaways of any other forward in the league.
Due to plenty of trades in the opposite direction, the Armada didn’t pick again until 68th overall where they selected Ted Lindsay, a left-handed goalie from Canada. Goalie was a much-needed void that needed filling when they lost their playoff goalie Yanno Rosejac in the offseason. Ted is a well-blaanced goaltender who excels at all aspect of the game and will do a lot to help rebuild the Armada’s backstop.
With their last pick in the draft, at 82 overall, the Armada picked Goalie Jeremy Kendell but have so far been unable to sign him.
Right after the draft the Armada were also able to sign one of the biggest free agents on the market, right defenseman Cup Noodles. Cup is a well balanced player form Oslo, Norway who I’m sure will light up the league and be killer on both sides of the ice to help the Armada to try and get back to the finals and maybe win the cup this year.
