(GRADED) [Deep Dive #1] - The History of the Maine Timber

What better way to celebrate my signing with the Maine Timber than to explore their history.

Founded in Season 25 as the Halifax Raiders, they had some success in their early history, with Championships in Season 26 and Season 30. There is too much here for me to dive into, so I will skip to the birth of the current Timber, when the Raiders were rebranded and moved to Maine prior to the start of Season 53 by recently promoted GM Citizen of Adraa and Co-GM CementHands.

The Timber began their time in Maine by selecting defenseman Mikkel Asmus Sondergard first overall in the Season 53 SMJHL Entry Draft. This wasn't enough to stop the team slipping to a 17-30-3 record in Season 53, missing the playoffs with the worst record in the league. Even the draft lottery wasn't kind to Maine that year, as they emerged with the second overall pick for the year after.

After selecting defenseman Rikard Bjerg with the second pick, Maine improved their record to 20-30-0 in Season 54. It is probably a reflection of the team that defenseman Will Windsor blocked a ridiculous 185 shots that season (though he led the league in blocked shots in seasons 53, 54 and 55). They missed the playoffs again, and once again the lottery dropped their pick, this time to third overall.

The Timber took left wing Lucas Johansson with that pick, and in Season 55 Maine would go on to achieve their first winning record, finishing sixth in the league with a 25-22-3 record from the attacking play of Lucas Hellquist and Alexander Oscarsson. The Timber caught fire in the playoffs, defeating Detroit, Anchorage and Kelowna before eventually falling to the Newfoundland Berserkers in 6 games.

Season 56 saw another solid season from Maine, with a record of 23-21-6 culminating in another playoff exit at the hands of Newfoundland.

Maine took center Dogwood Maple with the seventh overall pick of the Season 57 draft, and would go on to achieve their best record since their rebranding, 37-24-5. Jesse Seppanen scored 26 goals, with Alexander Oscarsson and Walton Stromberg chalking up 37 and 35 assists respectively. Third in the league, sadly, did not translate to playoff success as they lost in the first round of the playoffs to - who else - Newfoundland.

Before Season 58, GM Citizen of Adraa stepped down and was replaced by Toast, who had served as Co-GM when the team was still in Halifax. He brought in center Miguel Hefeweizen with the fifth overall pick. Sadly, a 17-46-3 record saw Maine finish dead last in the league. I won't even say who knocked them out in the first round of the playoffs. You already know.

The Timber used the second overall pick in the Season 59 Draft on defenseman, and presumably walrus, Duncan The Walrus. A 27-36-3 record was an improvement on the previous year which meant they were in better form for their second round playoff loss to Newfoundland.

In Season 60, Maine's second round playoff loss to Newfoundland was preceded by ComentHands being replaced as Co-GM by SouthPaw. Their 20-42-4 record was good enough for ninth in the league, and they beat Anaheim in the first round of the playoffs.

In the Season 61 draft, the Maine Timber drafted Jesper Aittokallio with the first overall pick and Viktor Krunk with the sixth pick. They have not lost to the Newfoundland Berserkers in the playoffs so far, and presumably won't.
