Imperial Map S61 - The Learning

(This post was last modified: 09-05-2021, 05:10 PM by Aleris.)

Last week, I set out to start an Imperial Map Series for the season. I put together a map where I colored every county that was closest to the city of an SHL team. I did not realize what I had gotten myself into. Setting up the initial map wasn't too bad after I re-taught myself some GIS. But there were some fears about how the number of games played per week and the scheduling system would effect and mold the map throughout the season. The number one lesson I've learned is these are types of things would probably be better in a American Football setting where there are not as many games per week. Enough rambling! Let's get in the what turned out to be a race to conquer North America the fastest. As a refresher below is the base map showing the closest county to each team.

Now for Day 1 of sims. I didn't think some teams would play (and win) 2 games. So you can see the lopsided-ness luck of the schedule start to take place. It really did come down to the schedule, as if you were the first team to beat someone, then you took the territory and only lost it if you lost to another team. Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Toronto and Los Angeles jump out to dominating leads with 3 territories total as all 3 teams win their first two games.

Day 2 is where I started to realize this series was not going to last the rest of the week. New England beats both Toronto and Tampa Bay to take pretty much the entire eastern North America. Meanwhile, Los Angeles continued to add to the West Coast. We also start to see the seeds planted, as the Platoon start their take over with a win against Buffalo.
Day 3 had probably the least amount of change. Edmonton beats Los Angeles and takes most of the west. New England and Baltimore hold. I also find it funny that no team has been able to hold on to Edmonton's territory, as we find Philadelphia in control of the cold north.
Day 4, the east changes hands. New Orleans haunts the Wolfpack out of the eastern half of North America. And in spectacular fashion. Philly manages to hand Manhattan their first win and gift them Edmonton. The territory continues to change hands everyday.

Enter Terminator drum theme (duh duh duhduhduh) Day 5 is Judgement Day. Edmonton makes a massive move and beats New Orleans. Now I can't imagine that teams from the east and west conferences play each other too much. So again we come to a near luck of scheduling. Edmonton happens to play the team that upset New England and takes the vast majority of the map. Now I can hear you already, "But Aleris, why is the map...?" I KNOW! Edmonton's NEXT GAME they LOSE everything to Baltimore. And boom, it's practically over. Baltimore now controls everything but Philadelphia's and Edmonton's territory. Of course the next team to beat Baltimore will take most of the map, but in two games the Imperial Map Series basically ended before the first week of sims is over.

This map is only up to 10/31 in the Index (Toronto beat Baltimore the next sim day, so now they control most of the map). I guess this ended up more of a sprint than the marathon I'd hoped for. Maybe next season I could try a different rule set to smooth things out and find a way for teams to get territories back. For now, I'll probably post a last map at the end of the season, to declare a winner (and maybe a minor loser like Hamilton is right now). Who do you think it'll be. Will Baltimore win it back? Or will another team reign dominant over North America?

(Also look the same thing for the Js coming soon)

This was still a really cool idea even though it didn't turn out as expected.

To make it last longer next time you could try exchanging territory only if the winning team currently shares a border with the losing team or is re-claiming their original spot currently owned by the losing team.

I'd suggest another type of map might work better. Something along the lines of each team starting with lets say... 50 territories.
Home win: +1 territory // Away loss: -1 territory
Home loss: -2 territories // Away Win: +2 Territories

The map conquest would last longer, and potentially multiple seasons as well.

This is what happens when one Civ just focuses on military while the others focus on commerce and culture.

Might is right.

Yeah I like something like this. A system to slow down the sort of "winner take all" I went with this time
