In this deep dive, I take a look back over the last 10 seasons of Kelowna Knights draft picks taken in the 3rd round of the SMJHL drafts. See what they have been doing with these later picks and what has worked or hasn't.

From SMJHL draft 51-61 the Knights made a total of 14 picks. Over this 10 season span, Knights have unearthed a stable source of players with a relative success rate of 71%. However, the distribution of those picks over the years is quite lopsided. 6 of those picks are from just the last 2 drafts, which is a whopping 42% of their entire 3rd round haul over the last 10 seasons.

This appears to mark a change in strategy from previous years as they had zero 3rd round picks in drafts 59, 58 and 56. While it is a very short time frame and much can change in the coming years. All but 1 of their last 6 players is still active on the roster. This should bode well for the future with a very strong core coming into their peaks at roughly the same time.

From a pure TPE standpoint, they drafted 9938 total TPE over this time frame. This averages out to 164 TPE per season, per player. Removing the inactive players from that calculation the number jumps to 206 TPE per player/season with the current crop of draftees. The highest earner title belongs to Rotticus Scott who’s managed to average 221 TPE since being drafted 24th overal in the 53rd SMJHL Draft.

Their draft picks of note from only the SMJHL drafts 60 are Duncan Mackenzie, selected 18th by Calgary Dragons w/ 425 TPE and Sean Stevenson III selected 35th overall by the Manhattan Rage in their respective SHL drafts. From this most recent SMJHL draft, Christian Kinsinger and Ignaz Pleyel are looking to be decent pickups for an SHL team as well.

Not everything has always been rosy and they’ve had a couple of misses. Most recent miss and continues to hurt the team was the drafting of goalie Jason Playstation. While his development was going along nicely, it plateaued and he’s lost his starting position to newcomer Lord Skrolk a 4th round/44th overall pick in the latest draft.

The biggest hit in their last 10 seasons of drafting was picking up Teddy Murphy, picked up 29th overall in the 54th draft. He holds the distinction of being the highest pick the Knights have generated these last 10 seasons going 6th overall in the SHL draft. Also has come on to coGM the Knights while being an active player. The old adage, S55 draft being the best draft holds true here.

Overall, when it comes to the 3rd round of the draft the Kelowna Knights appear to have found some secret sauce. They more often than not pick up decent talent that bolsters their roster in seasons to come. In the last two seasons especially, they really have leaned into their scouting ability and used it to bolster their roster with these 3rd round picks.

Hopefully this counts as sufficient work for a deep dive.
