(GRADED) Deep Dive #2 - TPE Distribution of the Wollker Division

(This post was last modified: 09-15-2021, 05:07 PM by Opera_Phantom.)

In this deep dive I examine the available TPE distribution of the Wollker division that consists of four teams. The Anchorage Armada, Kelowna Knights, Maine Timber and Vancouver Whalers. The total TPE available within the division as of 13 Sept 2021 is 31544, but with the SMJHL limitations only 26676 points have or can be applied. Within the division roughly 16% of all TPE is unavailable to teams to be utilized by the players.

Anchorage Armada | TPE: 6297 (7105)

The Armada has 23.6% of all assigned TPE within their division with only 12.4% of TPE unable to be utilized. That is quite a bit under the divisional average of 16%. The team breakdown in distribution is 4263 (67.7%) used by the forwards, 1569 (24.9%) in use by the defensive core and a league minimum of 465 (7.4%) between 3 goalies.

Kelowna Knights | TPE: 5620 (6340)

The Knights are the underdogs of the division, and have the least amount of assigned TPE among their player group. They hold only 21.1% of assigned TPE in the division and match Anchorage with 12.4% of TPE banked. Broken down, we forward group with 3268(58.1%) points, defense at 1789 (31.8%) with goalies pulling in 563 (10%).

Maine Timber | TPE: 6537 (7009)

The Timber 24.5% of divisional TPE, putting them competitively close with the Armada and are utilizing an impressive 93% of their entire TPE pool. That is significantly better than their rivals in the division. The forwards accounting for 3976 (60.8%), defense at 1631 (25.0%) and goalies an impressive 930 (14.2%)

Vancouver Whalers | TPE: 8222 (11090)

Finally we come to the Whalers, absolute powerhouse of the division. They hold 30.8% of the division's entire applied points pool. Pushing nearly 1/3rd of all points held by them in division with 3 other teams. Their forward group accounts for 6994 (63.1%) points, which is a 2700 point lead over the closest competitor in the division. Defensive corps are at 3152 (28.4%) points, nearly double that of each division rival. Goaltending is their only “weakness” and I use that term loosely at 944 (8.5%) points because while their starter is capped out at 425 points they don’t have an active backup.

Division Summary

From the TPE distribution within the division, we have a clear hierarchy to the division. The Vancouver Whalers are the heavy favourites to win it which is born out in the division standings. With 34 games played, Whalers have a 15 point lead over 2nd place. Things are a bit more interesting among the remaining teams. Despite Maine and Anchorage being a fairly close match TPE wise and would expect them to battle for the 2nd & 3rd spot. The Kelowna Knights with a fairly significant TPE deficit currently hold 2nd place with 33 games played and have 2 games in hand against the chasing teams. Their defensive heavy style and goaltending appears to be paying dividends. In contrast to the Armada reliance on a high powered offense but weak defense and non-existant goaltending has them in last 5 points adrift of the Timber with an equal number of games played.

The Divisions Future

Attempting to look into the crystal ball and forecast the next few seasons. The Vancouver Whalers should continue to be a force next season. Barring any call ups, they only age out 2 players and one is IFA. It is the year after they take a heavy toll losing at least 7 heavy earners.

The Timber are on the ascent, the core staying together over the next 2 seasons with only minor in active players scheduled to be lost. The heaviest loss is their starting goalie but they already have a maxed out replacement ready to assume the role.

Armada are an interesting case, their draft player distribution is relatively even except for S60 where they took 7 players. They have an active core, but I don’t see them pushing out of the mid pack. The lack of goaltender and defensive depth will hamper them going forward.

The Knights are in mid rebuild and it remains to be seen if the new crop of players can push to be contenders. 19 players of the 23 man roster are from the last two drafts and sporting 10 rookies for this season alone. They aren’t scheduled to lose anyone in the next two seasons. With just a couple of players to patch up some minor holes and another credible goalie to backstop their starter. S64 looks like their window opens for a serious push for a title.
