Vancouver Whalers vs Colorado Raptors

Today we take a deep dive into a day 13 matchup between two teams who are looking to be contenders for the cup; this should turn out to be a good game. This is a matchup between Colorado Raptors and the Vancouver whalers, who stand 4th and 2nd place respectively. Let’s take a quick look at their domination this season:

GP       W        L         OT       PTS      P%       GF     GA       DIFF
Vancouver               34        25        7          2          52       .765     158      88        +70
Colorado                 33        22        8          3          47       .712     124      73        +51

As we can see here, Vancouver is the favorite going into this matchup, but Colorado is no slouch themselves. Vancouver has the big advantage at offence, shown by their commanding goal for stats, while Colorado has an advantage on the other side of the ice. Both team's dont lose often, so this should be a unmovable rock vs unstoppable force type situation.

Starting Goalie – Colorado: Zhen Roza #29                                    GP 26  Wins 18  Shutouts 2  Save % .923
Starting Goalie – Vancouver: Olof Karsikko #0                                GP 28  Wins 20  Shutouts 4  Save % .908
Star Player Highlight - Colorado: Janne Virtanen                           GP 32  Goals 6  Assists 10  Points 16  +/- 1
Star Player Highlight - Whalers: verBrokeAgain YoungBoy            GP 32  Goals 9  Assists 18  Points 27  +/- 1

Period One

10:00    The game has been quite defensive so far this game, with both teams having 5 shots a piece. Robert Sunfish and NeverBroke Again YoungBoy have been the best players on the ice so far, with a game ranking right around 58.
11:56    Goal by Alexis Saint-Michel: who rips it past the goalie to open the scoring. The Whalers offense is on full display with this nice passing play.
12:59    Goal by Lev Lebedev: another goal for the whalers. We also have an update from the ice, claiming that the Colorado Raptors are playing with a balanced orientation in both offensive and physical. We might have to see them switching it up as this style isn’t working.
20:00  End of the period: Colorado have been playing great since the last goal; Colorado have closed the shot deficit but have yet to squeeze one by Olof.

Period Two

8:36    Goal by Leon Schweingruber: Finally, Colorado beat Olof. They’ve been playing well with the shots still being about equal, and this goal brings them within one.
20:00  End of the period: The whalers poured it on to finish the period, with them taking shot after shot, but nothing has given. This seems to be a high-flying offensive game, which fits right in with the Whalers game plan. The best player on the whalers has been the goalie Olof Karsikko, with a 67-game rating so far. The rest of the Whalers players appear to be very balanced, with no out standers.

Period Three

3:08    Goal by Uhtred Ragnarsson: A quick goal for the Whalers to open the period; it is now 3-1 for the whalers.
9:21    Goal by Artemius Nystrom: Colorado gets another through after 28 shots. They are now within one with just over 10 minutes to play. This is possible.
13:18  Goal by Giannis Kroustis: A heartbreaker, the whalers increase their lead to two. With the Raptors pushing hard for the tying goal, the whalers can counterattack and score. Still time left, but it’s getting desperate.
14:36  Goal by Jack Nishimori: Is anyone playing defense this period? Goals are just flying these last few minutes, and now the raptors are within one again. Shots are 31 Raptors to 36 for the Whalers.
20:00  Win for the Whalers: Not a great way for the Colorado raptors to close out the period. After getting their last goal they were only able to get one measly shot on net. It was overall a great try against a higher ranked team, but the Whalers goalie was too strong: finishing with a 72.3 game rating. My first star ranking would have to go to Center Ako Zile: who finished with 2 assists and a +2 plus minus.
