For todays deep dive we will be looking into season fifty-five expansion of the Quebec City Citadelles, and how they managed to win a Four Star Cup just four seasons into their tenure at the SMJHL.

The Citadelles decided to build a team that might not have been competitive during their inaugural season, but one that was built for future success, which paid dividends when they were able to hoist the SMJHL championship trophy in just their fourth season. They made waves at the season fifty-five expansion draft by using their leverage to gain a few picks, including the season fifty-five 24 overall, and a season fifty-six third rounder - one of which was Taylora Petrov, a left defenceman who was sixth in team scoring in their first season. At the season fifty-five entry draft, GM Evok went off the board and selected Zdenko Beranek first overall, which in hindsight was the best possible choice - as he was second in team scoring in his rookie season, scoring 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points and improved at a steady clip, eventually leading the team in point production. Evok's strong drafting only got better as she honed her skills as a new GM, building her team through the draft and and cementing the Quebec City Citadelles reputation as a perennial contender. By just their third season they finished first in the league after regular season concluded, posting a 49-08-09 record. And remember that strong drafting we talked about earlier?  Evok  found a couple diamonds in the ruff in Mew Two and Brian Davenport in the season fifty-seven draft, who managed to put this team over the top - Mew Two absolutely exploded in his second year, scoring 69 points (35G, 34A) and Davenport followed with a respectable 44 points (19G, 25A). But her eye for talent didn't stop there, Evok managed to sign some essential pieces of this roster via free agency. Including the goaltending duo of Tyler Ward and Mat Smith, and forwards Igor Petrov and Mikael Koskinen who were third and fourth respectively in team scoring during the Citadelles cup winning season. Season fifty-eight saw the Citadelles finish second overall in regular season scoring, going 46-14-6 for 98 points, and a .742 points percentage. In the playoffs they had a bye though the first round, took the Colorado Raptors to seven games in the second, beat the Kelowna Knights four games to one in the semi-finals, and took out the Anchorage Armada in five games to win the cup.

Since the season fifty-eight cup win the Citadelles have fallen back down to earth slightly, finishing sixth and fourth overall respectively. Though they have managed to keep up their strong playoff performances making it to the semi-finals both years and losing to the Anchorage Armada both times. Alas, fret not. A little over half way through the current season and the Citadelles are flying high again, sitting on top of the standings, right where they belong. With a bit of luck and hard work, they’ll find themselves hoisting the Four Star once again.
