Team DACH, known as Team Austria to its friends, stomped the competition in the first day of pre-season games for the upcoming World Junior Championships. Through four games Austria is undefeated, with a +23 goal differential and only 4 goals against in total. The team scored a league high 27 goals with a league low 4 goals against and two shutouts.
The standout players from the day were goaltender Iorek Byrnison who turned away all 16 shots faced over two full games of shutout play as well as forwards Duncan Mackenzie and Marco Barengrub, who put up 11 and 10 points respectively in four games of work. Times are good, Team DACH is looking strong and the locker room is buzzing. It is a great time to be a Team DACH player! GAME 1 – Team Young Guns 0 Vs Team DACH 9 Team DACH started the tournament off with a bang, putting up 2 goals courtesy of Gerry Atrick and dominating the Young Guns in shots and possession. If not for the fine play of Team Young Guns goaltender Rebecca Montagne, the scoreline would be significantly more tilted. The second period saw Team DACH really take off, putting up four goals courtesy of Jaeger Jones, Marco Barengrub, Duncan Mackenzie, and Zayne Dangle, while Gerry Atrick provided two assists to bring him up to 4 points on the night. The third period was a quieter affair, as Team DACH only put three more goals past the Young Guns provided by Oskar Von Walther, Zayne Dangle, and Markus Jager. Three Stars: 1. Gerry Atrick (DACH) 2g, 2A 2. Jannik Nordstern (DACH) 0g 3A 3. Marco Barengrub (DACH) 1g 2A Game 2 – Team Finland 3 Vs Team DACH 6 With Finland being a more dangerous opponent than the last, Team DACH looked to jump ahead early and control the game, which they were able to do with a goal at the 8 minute mark from star centerman Marco Barengrub, which was quickly followed by another from Cormac Ponaire. Mikko Rashford of Finland managed to bring the Fins within one, scoring the first goal against DACH of the tournament. The second period was all Team DACH and it started quickly. 2 minutes in Alfred Yankovic potted a marker followed seven minutes later by Gerry Atrick. Duncan Mackenzie scored his second of the tournament Pre-Season 5 minutes later and Team DACH was staring at a 5 – 1 lead. The third period saw real pushback from Finland, but not until Cormac Ponaire has scored his second of the game to make it 6 - 1. From there, Finland managed to find the back of the net twice, but the result was never in doubt and Team DACH closed out a second impressive win. Three Stars: 1. Duncan Mackenzie (DACH) 1g, 2A 2. Marco Barengrub (DACH) 1g 2A 3. Cormac Ponaire (DACH) 2g 1A Game 3 – Team DACH 7 Vs Team Young Guns 0 The domination and lack of mercy once again showed in a second drubbing of Team Young Guns. Marcel Beck started off the scoring only 34 seconds into the first period off a great pass from Duncan Mackenzie. From there, Zayne Dangle and Marco Barengrub filled in the net, creating a 3-0 first period lead. The second period was significantly quieter, as Team Young Guns went into a defensive shell and tried to stifle the Austrian snipers. Duncan Mackenzie manged to muscle his way through the Young Guns defense and smash home a goal to put Team DACH up 4-0. The beginning of the third period was much like the first, with three goals being scored in a three minute period, with Jalal ad-Din Afinoganov, Marco Barengrub and Sebastien Weiss adding their names to the scoresheet. After that, things settled down and Team DACH cruised to a 7-0 victory, outshooting the Guns 52 - 11. Three Stars: 1. Duncan Mackenzie (DACH) 1g, 3A 2. Vin Bangsa-Wamy (DACH) 0g 3A 3. Oskar Von Walther (DACH) 0g 2A Game 4 – Team DACH 5 Vs Team Young Guns 1 In their third game of the pre-season against Team Young Guns, Team DACH looked to start the game with a look of complacency and Team Young Guns took advantage, finally breaking through the DACH defence and seeing Max Pane light the lamp as Team DACH fell behind for the first time in Pre-Tournament play. This did seem to wake up the beast, as Team DACh managed to put in two goals towards the end of the period, with Duncan Mackenzie and Jaeger Jones getting the job done. The second period all Team DACH as three goals were scored with Marcel Beck, Markus Jager and Hans Graf put Team DACH up 5-1. The score held hroughout, as Team Young Guns managed to find the lockdown strategy that worked and significantly improved the shots on goal, managing 18 against Team DACH while only allowing 47. Three Stars: 1. Randy Marsh (DACH) 0g, 2A 2. Jannik Nordstrom (DACH) 0g 2A 3. Konstantin Selich (DACH) 0g 2A Winnipeg Aurora
