The Regina Elk look to have a bounce back season after some monumental hardships that the organization has had to deal with since their inception a few seasons back. This breakdown is an attempt to analyze their present situation and outlook for the coming season. Off the bat, Regina is a team that is still trying to find their footing as an expansion team. It is far from easy jumping into a league with teams that have been established for decades upon decades or teams that have simply relocated. As a brand new expansion team the Elk have had to build from the ground up as quickly as possible while also balancing current players and future prospects. This build up of talent is not as easy as it sounds. The strongest players of each team were protected in the expansion draft. Because of this, The Elk are at a pretty huge disadvantage TPE wise compared to most of the other teams in the SMJHL. At the time of this article the current top earning player on the Elk is goalie Rebecca Montagne at 404 and right wing Yannick Svoboda a close second at 402. These are the only players currently over 400 TPE. There are six players in the 300 TPE range and 10 players sitting between 155 and 300 TPE. Compounding this problem of TPE deficiency is the fact that at least six of the rostered players have checked out form the locker room. Seemingly these are the fizzled out players that have peaked in their development. They will help the Elk in some manner but will continue to improve and push Regina to the next level of competition. The final aspect of the problems that Regina faces in developing their team identity is on the management side of things. This past offseason the general manager of the Elk had to step aside due to personal reasons. New management was quick to step up and continue the development of the team and they have done a great job with the tough hand that they were dealt. However, this is a steep hill to climb and may make Regina a tough sell for free agent players in the near future. The real question is how will the Regina Elk fair in the upcoming season. With six games played in the preseason we can see some possibilities emerging. The Elk sit in the upper half of the league, securing eight out of twelve possible points so far. That is good enough for second place in their division and a guarantee of a playoff appearance. At the moment it looks like the Elk offense is going to run through Jaeger Jones and Yannick Svoboda. The center and right wing have seven and six points respectively. The biggest weak spot offensively for the Elk at the moment seems to be the highly touted prospect and third overall draft pick, San-Sam Emerson. At the moment, Emerson is the only member of the Elk who has failed to tally a point. This is a bit worrying seeing how Emerson is supposed to be an offense driver on the blue line. One little silver line around that cloud is that Emerson is a +1 in the preseason, so although he isn’t necessarily contributing to the attack on the score sheet he is playing solidly. As the regular season rolls around, we will see how Regina’s past and present will combine to create a hopefully bright future. (582 words)
