Game 1; Knights slay Kraken Knights

The S62 season started hot for the Kelowna Knights as they begin their season on the road. Their season opener was in Carolina where the Knights faced off against the Kraken. It was a brutal 1st period for the Knights as they found themselves in a dog fight from the drop of the puck.

Ergo Nomic made her presence felt as she scored her first-ever SHL goal 3 minutes into the game. Kelowna replied with a goal by Petr Svoboda at the 6 and a half minute mark on a Kelowna power play. After that, it was Carolina going to work scoring 3 straight to take a 4-1 lead. Viktor Zukal had 2 goals back to back.  Patya Perevalov had the other Kraken goal on a Carolina Powerplay.  Kelowna then seemed to find their game scoring 2 more to close off the first period. Sebastian Weiss and Duncan Mackenzie both got their first of the season. Mackenzie's goal was also on the Powerplay for Kelowna.

It took just 1 minute and 22 seconds for Kelowna to tie the game and Aldo Huber got his first of the season on a perfect pass from Patrick Toes. The Kraken took the lead once again in the 13th minute. Vincent Fox, who has having one hell of a game, got his first of the season for Carolina. Kelowna however, where not to be left behind as one of their rookies scored his first goal of his SMJHL career. Mateo Lavoie fired in a rocket from their blue line to tie the game at 5 and bring the 2nd period to a close.

The 3rd period was another close-knit affair as Kelowna and Carolina played a wide-open game. The pace was very entertaining. At 9:41 of the 3rd, Marek Skoda took a high sticking penalty putting Kelowna's already perfect powerplay back on the ice. Ignaz Pleyel makes the Kraken pay with his first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.

  Knights

The Knights were right back at it again the next night as they played The Nevada Battleborn in Las Vegas. Nevada was coming off a 4-1 loss to Maine and was looking to win their home opener.

However, Kelowna Rookie Tim Riggins got the party started for the Knights 3 minutes in with a great one-time shot off a great setup by Malach Skoda and Ignaz Pleyel. Riggins got his first career SMJHL goal. The Battleborn fought right back with 3 straight goals. Max Pane, Adelie de Pengu, and Conner Snooks all found the back of the net. Snooks goal was even a power-play goal.

Down 3-1 at the start of the 2nd, the Knights came out determined to claw back into it. They kept their pressure high and scored 5 minutes in as Ignaz Pleyel got his second of the season and made the game 3-2.  2 minutes after that Leons Briedis got his first on a great faceoff win by Chris McZehrl, whose face-off win went to Malach Skoda. McZehrl got his first SMJHL point and the 3 knights rookies all now have their first points of the season.  The second period came to an end with the game tied 3-3.

The knights came into the 3rd wanting to complete the comeback and it took just 46 seconds for rookie Tim Riggins to score his second of the game. Malach Skoda got his 3rd assist of the game on that goal. The knights were very much in control of the game until Sebastian Weiss took a questionable hooking call. Nevada made the knights pay on the Powerplay as Conner Snooks scored his 2nd of the game. That Powerplay looked to have swung the momentum in Kelowna's favor as they mounted one solid drive after another, It wasn’t until 17:52 that Nevada would finally break the Knight's backs with a goal by Chicago Bound. That goal would come too late in the game for the Knights to battle back. Final score 5-4 Nevada.

Malach Skoda - 3 assists, 3 points
Tim Riggins - 2 goals, 2 points
Ignaz Pleyel - 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 points
Leonis Briedis - 1 goal, 1 point
Aldo Huber, Chris McZehrl Jr, Sebastian Weiss - 1 Assist, 1 point

Kelowna Powerplay: 0/2
Kelowna PenaltyKill: 0/2

Upcoming.  Knights

After the first 2 games, the Knights look are sitting around the bottom of their Conference, Sitting 6th out of 7. They also have only played 2 games so far while the top 4 teams in the conference ( and Division ) have played 3. This is obviously just the beginning of the season and there is still a ton of hockey left to be played. At the moment the trending #takeoutthenthrashee has been halted, But for how long. The next 5 games for Kelowna will also be on the road. They are against Vancouver  Whalers , Great Falls  Grizzlies , back to Carolina  Kraken , Quebec City  Citadelles , and then final Detroit  Falcons  before their home opener against division rivals Anchorage.

Rookie watch:    Knights

The rookies however have been the bright spot for Kelowna in a way.  Tim Riggins showed he can actually score goals, unlike his preseason form, he looks much more involved in the game and not just looking to make a hit on an opposing player. Mateo Lavoie has also been solid on the blue line. He does have a goal so far and is a +1 at the moment. The final rookie is Chris McZehrl Jr. He has 1 assist so far but is doing well as a centerman for this team. The rookie is at 47.8% in the faceoff circle. For a rookie 2 games in this is solid, and will only get better with more games in. He is also a + 1 player and a reliable player in his own zone.
