(GRADED)Deep Dive #1: A Scary Start for the Scarecrows

How accurate of a picture can you paint after the preseason ends? Usually it’s hard to judge teams off of their preseason because they’re still trying new things out. That is most teams, some teams are so bad in the preseason that you can’t expect much more out of them in the regular season. The Scarecrows are one of these teams. Their abysmal 1-5-1 record was only overshadowed by Detroit’s 1-6-0, were not here to talk about Detroit however.
In these seven games played, The Scarecrows were outshot 338-144. That amounts to on average 48 shots against per game and 20 shots for per game. This ratio between shots for vs against is tragic. The only reason St Louis have even stood a chance in some of the games they’ve played has been their excellent netminder. Goalies against The Scarecrows averaged around a .909 save percentage, which is nothing above average, however St Louis goalie averaged a .926 save percentage. When you lose so many games but your goalie does so well, it really shows what a great player he is.
The Scarecrows started their preseason against Carolina Kraken, which ended up as a 5-0 loss.
Their second game was a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Whalers.
Their third game was a tightly fought 7-6 overtime loss to the Newfoundland Berserkers.
Their fourth game was a 4-2 loss to the Anchorage Armada.
Their fifth game was a rematch with the Whalers, in which they lost 2-0.
Their sixth game came against the Regina Elk, which they lost 4-1.
Their seventh and final preseason game was against the Maine Timber was a 3-2 which they, believe it or not, lost.

Their top scorer, Alix Nunez only had 2 goals in their 7 preseason matchups, and did not register any assists. Their points leader, Ramsbottom got a solid 5 points in 7 games but if you truly want to win the four start cup, you’re probably going need at least one point per game player, which the scarecrows just do not have currently.
Only 4 of the scarecrows had more takeaways than giveaways, and only 2 of them were even. That leaves 11 of them who have gave the puck up more times than they won it. Not only are they unable to score, they can’t even keep the puck.
Another issue is the amount of penalties they take, they totaled 69(nice.) PIM through 7 games, almost 10 per game.

Lack of scoring, careless puck possession, and bad discipline. A recipe for a terrible season. The only thing keeping the scarecrows from going winless this season is their goalie. Catalano has excelled on a terrible team, it would be nice to see him play for a solid defense where he didn’t get 50 shots per game.

These disappointing results have set the stage for another season where St Louis will not do much. The beginning of their regular season games hasn’t been much better than their preseason, with them going 2-15-0 in the first 17 games. Unless something major is done to counteract the sinking of the scarecrows ship, it doesn’t seem that they can save themselves.

What the scarecrows need most right now, besides a new HO, is a goal scorer. You just can not do anything if your team doesn’t score.
