Anton Harrier and the end of vacations
#1

Far as he could tell, the girl had turned into the family's "regional matriarch" so to speak - she called them in every day or so, sent gifts, gave them tips about life, the whole nine yards. Pretty impressive for someone who, by all accounts, preferred to live her life as a seamstress, working out of home and not really making a fortune out of it. As far as the neighbours knew, she was provided by her husband, who apparently had a comfortable government job and this was merely a way to get her out of the traditional and rather bucolic suburban boredom.

Granted that people weren't aware that the needles were actually Kunimitsu's weapon of choice and she was only really keeping that going to make sure she got some practice with them, but the façade seemed to work out fairly well. The link between the well-known hockey player and the local seamstress wasn't that well known and most people in the neighbourhood just called her Ginger. Still, Ginger wasn't the one Anton waited for at that moment.

"Harrier."

The gruff sounding voice came from a muscular black man, dressed in a fancy suit and wearing some fine aviator shades. The two flashed smiles at each other, Anton actually grinning from it later on. He wasn't used to being enjoyed by the McClouds - whether Scepter was a family member by blood or not, Anton still considered his appreciation a very big deal. As much as the Irishman was a cocky git at times, he did prefer to have more friends than enemies. The Battleborn knew him as a fun character that often brought more to the table outside of the game than inside, the skate gang knew him for his fun personality and his ability to get into odd situations, the casino staff knew him for his sincerity and goodwill... and the McClouds knew him for his attitude and ability to start trouble, which was something Anton was keen on changing. Befriending Spectre and his wife would certainly help it, that he knew.

The two walked towards the garage, sharing some small talk before the ninja pulled out a car key, pressed a button and a nearby Chevrolet Corvette C2 reacted. Anton seemed a bit off from the sight of the car and quickly questioned why he even owned a car. Spectre noted that the car was merely for appearance's sake and he had actually earned it from work as the vehicle itself had some abilities that were definitively interesting. Harrier thought if he should point out the small group of ghosts staring at them from the side of the car - the lady on a white dress with blood marks made Anton particularly weary but he chose to only listen to the relevant comments until Spectre pointed out that the car "had previous owners in the past" and "they were a handful but he was able to tame them".

Again, ninjas weren't unaware of the world of spirits - the left-winger himself wasn't an exception to the rule after all. "So... why are they like that? And why five of them?" Harrier asked, puzzled as he counted them once he turned the car on and they just sort of followed them over the front of the car. Spectre shrugged, mentioning that unlike most ghosts - they were really only interested in sharing stories about their past, with the exception of the newest one, who just asked to check the sports news pretty often and had a thing for betting. Spectre then smiled. "He's a Battleborn fan." Anton could swear that ghost, in particular, smiled at him, waving. It was hard to see the images as they swirled, the effects of souls without bodies to call their own trying to move on air. Still, Anton knew how to see humour in things. "Heh. Tell him we'll do our best for our newest fan."

As they moved down the highways, Spectre opted to ask Harrier things instead. He was curious about that legendary grandfather of Anton's, the boy that beat the devil on a fiddle duel. For the first time in a while, Anton was able to blab loads about his grandfather - his girlfriend went blank-eyed when she even heard the story about him - and basically re-tell everything he could recall. The time he beat ten sirens with an improvised rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, his run-in with the Opera of the Dead, taming the Loch Ness Monster, the few couples of times he played for kings and queens, the ten challenges against the devil and all the times he saved his grandmother from trouble by playing his fiddle.

Often, Spectre noted that the ninjas had their own ways of defeating beasts but was shocked to hear one could really do it with music. Anton noted that he actually had slain demons in the past but had to use hand-to-hand and his rep was rather weak in comparison - just some Jiang-shi in China and betting a hockey game against an entity of Brazilian Macumba - but he did admit that once his hockey days were over, he was probably gonna try his hand at honouring his grandfather's name. He doubted immortality was on the table but was very much down for trying.

That idea was the one the Spectre wasn't fond of: he instead noted that every soul had to rest one day, even the ghosts from his car would eventually find their way there, hopefully. Before the tone of the talk got too confrontational, however, Spectre noted he had a jersey on the car that he hoped Harrier could take to Nevada and get it signed - a request of his boss from "the Bureau". Anton pretended to think about it, to which Spectre mentioned he could give him a lucky charm as a reward, which was what made Harrier agree in glee. Not that it was all about pleasing the man on the other side of the car but really, the guys at the club would probably enjoy doing some jersey signing for "some friends of his brother-in-law".

Once they reached the house, a rather nice suburban home with around three rooms or so, Anton noticed another weird sight for the day, a pair of foxes as pets. Once he asked about it, the owner of the place replied with normality that these were keepsakes from Kunimitsu's graduation mission in Berlin. She was to deliver the head of an interceptor who worked with an exotic species trafficker. The ginger in question then showed up, carrying a little fox cub that she was nursing and replied in good nature that she had one-shotted the mission. Unlike what he had seen the previous time he had been with the McClouds, Kunimitsu chose to look as natural as possible home, not even bothering with a mask. While she gave a good petting to the little fox cub's head, she gave a look at the two, mentioning that she'd be back home in a minute and that Kasumitsu was busy setting everything up.

Ah, yes. Anton could remember what they were up to - a movie session, one that the kunoichi in front of them had come up with as a way to properly finish her brother-in-law's vacations while also symbolically starting their own break period as Spectre was finally off to a sabbatical after a couple of years working and three or four days off. As the lady of the house told him to serve himself in their kitchen, Anton played along, grabbed a water bottle and decided it'd be enough of a movie snack for him. Once he took a seat, near Kasumitsu obviously, he noticed the younger kunoichi's face somewhat of a mess from already having eaten some chocolate bars. Anton shook his head and let out a little laugh while the girl merely looked to the side, frustrated by his snarky behaviour. They managed to make up in a quick fashion but it was a funny sight before the movie started.

He wasn't entirely aware but he was in for a three-movie session - seems he was the only one not allowed to make a pick after all. He was able to tell who picked who, at least. The first movie was a rather dork-ish adaptation of an anime he heard about during his brief stint in Anaheim but the mere fact they were watching something that was likely designed to appeal to young children and teenagers made him pretty sure that the person who called it had to be the girl sitting near him, stuffing her cheeks full of chocolate with nuts like some sort of squirrel. For all the bad things you could say about the intellectual property known as LuLungus' Bizarre Adventure, the script certainly carried everything to a passable effort. The girl near him squealed a lot, so he could imagine that she was pretty happy with the result.

Kunimitsu's movie came after that - the lady herself said it out loud - and thus, he imagined it would be a solid chance to come up with a profile on his sister-in-law's tastes. Surely, she'd pick something that matched her style. He wasn't too shocked about the result as he saw a movie he was actually familiar with. Lady Snowblood was something of a unique taste but it was the kind of sight you couldn't really forget once you had seen it. Hell, he remembered well when he watched it - Rio de Janeiro, Ligmabaldze Academy Training Camp - he was staying at an old house downtown, a three-floor place with a giant staircase and he watched the movie with some teammates on a large TV as the rain pissed outside, severely, like a proper summer storm. Meanwhile, blood. Loads of blood. A revenge tale with a tragic end. Best not to spoil it, come to think of it.

After a ten-minute break to relax their sights, it was time for the final movie. Given what he already knew, they were now to be treated to whatever Spectre had picked. And so, his eyes were soon greeted by another familiar sight. A half-human vampire hunter fighting through powerful vampires. Blade's always been a classic and given the similarities between the protagonist and his brother-in-law, Anton felt he could probably tell why he chose that movie. Still, it all passed fairly quickly and soon, he was outside of their house, waiting for Kasumitsu to finish a talk with her sister before the two could go back to Las Vegas.

Of course, that was the moment he realized he was missing the lucky charm he was promised. The ninja merely grinned at his realization, merely noting that "it'd be there whenever you looked for it". The Irishman considered it a good enough answer and left.

(...)

As he geared up for their first match of the season, all Anton could hear was someone (one of the rookies) yelling about a mannequin leg inside his locker room. He rose an eyebrow, thinking about the origin of said leg and then realized it. They had gotten his locker mixed up with one of the rookies. Yep. An auspicious start of the season if there ever was one.
