(GRADED)Deep Dive #2 - Maine Timber

The Maine Timber seem to always be the bridesmaid and not the quite the bride. It seems that season after season, despite strong performances, they get stuck in a division with a team or teams that are just a hair better than they are. After missing the playoffs last year courtesy of stacked Wollker Division despite having more than twenty points on the Anaheim Outlaws and Detroit Falcons, the Timber once again will miss out on that coveted by week to the juggernaut that is the Anchorage Armada. With still a few games left in the season it is unknown who Maine will come up against in the playoffs but it stands to reason that they should fair well. But what makes the Timber tick? Who are the old growth trees that protect the young saplings growing up in Maine?

Redwood Tier – The best of the best on the Maine Timber
Big Newff – Newff may be one of the most dominant players in the SMJHL. New sits at the top of the J in hits with 339 at the time of this article. Now with that stat alone one would most likely think that Newff is just a goon skating to kill rather than actually support the team. That is big no way José there. Newff is tied for fourth in scoring for the Timber at 52 points. The number of hits combined with top level offensive play does not just make Newff an fan favorite in Maine but around the league

Jay Cue – Cue is the offensive backbone in Maine. He tops the Timber with 67 points. This also drops Cue at fifth place in the league for points. Like Newff, Cue is not just a one trick pony. He also has fairly strong defensive senses with 78 blocked shots so far this season.

Miles O’Brien – O’Brien is a defensive forward master. He averages almost two minutes of shorthanded time on ice a game. That’s more than a minute than the forward with the second most shorthanded time. He is a penalty killer extraordinaire. This level of defensive play combined with 53 points on the season so far push Miles into the top tier of the Timber.

Oak Tier – Vital players just a shade behind the tops
Archangelo Scaradog Jr. – ASJ is a bit of a glass cannon in Maine. His 62 points puts him at number two in Maine scoring and just one point shy of the tenth spot in league wide scoring. The reason that he does not make the Redwood tier is because of his overall lack of defensive stats
Maverick Seabrook – The second clear cut oak tier player is Seabrook. Seabrook is only one point behind the Redwood tier Miles O’Brien with 52. What keeps Seabrook out of the Redwood tier is his lack of penalty kill time and overall defensive play.

Pine Tier – Players that provide excellent support for the Timber
Velky Muz – Muz is the shot block sorcerer supreme in Maine. VM leads the Timber with 129 blocks which is also good enough for ninth most among SMJHL defenders. To add onto the bravery and grit that Muz brings to the party is a strong 38 points, second most among Maine defenders.

If these players can continue their excellent play into the playoffs, then perhaps Maine can finally overcome their last few seasons of postseason heartache.

Good luck, Trees!
